I’m old what is the reference? @Heliosurge
I disagree about the 90Hz part. Even before the campaign had finished they were updating backers about the possibility that the 8K might not achieve 90Hz, and put a clear statement in their FAQ and email updstes that hitting 90Hz was “High risk” - this is as good communication you can hope for with an R&D project. The only better thing they could have done in my eyes is gone back and edited all their previously compiled marketing materials, but in some respects I see this as overkill. As a backer rather than a consumer it is your responsibility to read into the risks before the completion of the campaign.
However with regards to the RGB panels - yeah, something’s gone wrong at some point here. Either Pimax haven’t been made aware of the issues (bit lazy, possibly due to the very very aggressive timescale they have tried to achieve), or they’ve just communicated it poorly.
I realize that and I fully agree, but when you have big YouTubers like tested and Linus, who have millions of subscribers, and they push what’s in the marketing material, the damage is already done. I definitely agree with you that people should read closely, but the damage is done for most people and that’s what is sad
That image makes their scalar look like it’s dumb as a bag of rocks. Damn that’s a big difference!
If it was the message I deleted it was not letting me cancel it.
Sad and a bit disappointing sure, but not unforgivable in my opinion.
I’m trying to reserve judgement of Pimax as a company for after we get our rewards and they start producing products straight for consumers. That is a much more straightforward relationship, and I can only hope Pimax will at least have learnt something from this tricky development process.
If we were simple stakeholders at this point, a change in specification from RGB panels to non-RGB wouldn’t be as big of a concern. The complication is in our position as consumers as well as early investors. It’s a detail they should not have committed to so early when we have a vested interest in the end product. They will probably realise this in hindsight.
The thing is pimax has already developed one consumer-grade headset, and they did the same thing vis marketing with that headset, as anyone who’s been on the Forum since it came out can attest.
The 4K used to have the same problems ie upscaling 1080p to 4K. It took months to get 1440p at 60 hertz. Now it’s still one of the sharpest 110 degree fov headsets, but it took some headache to get there.
I would be a lot easier on them if they hadn’t done this kind of thing before. I’m slightly annoyed and I’m not even a backer because I want the HMDI Buy to be ready, and as awesome as it can be when I get it.
