Nvidia is researching a new behemoth of a graphics card that will feature multiple GPU chips on a single card, each able to access shared memory. This will be the graphics card we need to power the true next generation of VR. But I fear how expensive this will be.
Pimax, it’s time to start looking into (not developing) a 16k HMD (not 8k per eye; 16k per eye) and full horizontal and vertical FoV views. Have you thought about using reflection (curved mirrors) vs refraction (lenses) for focus?
I wouldn’t hold my breath on pimax doing anything to be honest. We are still a year away from getting a half decent headstrap for the headsets we have now.
I don’t think anything will reach the consumer space anytime soon, simply because there is no competition that necessitates innovation in the present space. The RTX lineup epitomizes this. I think it will probably be 2024 before we see anything like this.
Although that is true, Nvidia have a different approach to that.
It will just launch the next lineup, independent from AMD (which is very sad, because i am very fond of them. I still remember my GLORIOUS AIW 9700 card. But nowadays they simply can´t compete with the behemoth that Nvidia have become) and PRICE it accordingly.
Problem with 8K-X is that it will have the same PPD as the current device, but require way more grunt to run. GPU’s are not in a place currently that high resolution and FPS are achievable, I mean, the $1200 2080 ti is only pushing 60-70hz on the current, non native device.
NVidia’s perfomance increases by about 20% between generations and that should be sufficient for current desktop gaming.
Only proper NVLink software support could help the 8K-X achieve outstanding performance imo. Good FFR and Brainwarp would make the experience acceptable in the meantime.
Im lucky enough to be at a point in my life where I can afford a $1500 GPU and still put food on the table but I REFUSE to part with that kind of money for a video card. no way!
bingo. No way should 1 component cost as much as an entire build. If you took 2 RTX 2060s and counted their cores, etc. 2 of them equals the same number as a 2080 TI. 2 2060’s at $350 (for retail) means that a 2080 TI should cost $700, and Nvidia would still make a profit. After the mining craze, they just got more greedy.
And think if Nvidia would allow the lower tier cards to sli like Amd does with CF. With Amd I think we need to wait & see if with the infiniti fabric if they decide to focus on making waves again like they did with cpus.
I don’t follow crypto currencies closely as I never participated, but I think GPU mining was moved from bitcoin to other currencies. With bitcoin it really does not make sense and only specialised HW has a chance at that.
