Starbreeze acquire the tech in 2014. before that it was enthusiast VR headset builders like Palmer lucky and I

But i love how they got that field off view without distortion or cross eyed feeling in such a compact design!

They way they accomplished the wider FOv is by canting more aggressively than the other headsets. not that difficult to do. is always about the matching the Optics and software.

If I had some coders and some hardware guys, meaning creating a proper board layout, I could build a similar headset

Cool, you were involved in headset building? I always played with the idea of starting my own company, but I’m somewhat happy now that I didn’t. It seems just so complex to get it all exactly right. I mean I do think I could get it to the Pimax level, but to take it beyond that (solve the distortion completely) seems really challenging.

Yes, I have built utra wide FOV headsets(180 FOV) in 2013 and 2014. There was a another Chinese wide FOV chines kickstarter that ended prematurely before Pimax came to the scene. Those guys reached out to me during their development

You’re not Ian by any chance? If so, then I know you  haha

I am not, but I am sure he is a nice guy

Hehe ok. It’s the guy Pimax reached out to, years ago, when they had problems with their Pimax 4k drivers. I tried brokering a deal back then, because I wanted the problems solved, but Pimax didnt want to pay him a dime, haha. But in the end Pimax fixed the problems, so it seems they didn’t need his help anyway.

Oh sheesh. oh well, that is how business works

Yeah, Pimax also said they didn’t feel comfortable to open up their source code to an external developer, which I guess kind of makes sense, so that was also a reason. And I think they were pretty close to fixing it themselves since I think 1-2 month later they fixed the problems with their pimax 4k driver.

Anyway, like said, I’m happy I never pulled the trigger and started a HMD company. I mean the software and electronic part is rather easy (just build upon OSVR, like Pimax did). But the optics is a different story. I could never do what Pimax did, release a headset with distortion, I’m a perfectionist, it would need to be perfect. So I’d probably end up like those guys from XTAL, who travelled the world trying to find the best optic specialists and design, while the costs keep mounting and mounting … Quite a nightmare scenario if you ask me.

Thats a thing the starvr one did realy right,a distortion free image over the big field off view.

When I was searching to build optics, the prototypes where above my budget. eventually I moved on to other ventures

Marek from Xtal is a super cool guy. I would say that he seem to care for their product.

Right, I think that having fixed mounted lenses with no mechanical adjust ability is hurting the unit. It was a design flaw.

I suppose I could mod it will see if I will go that route

Haha, modding a $3200 unit, not sure I’d take that chance, last time I tried increasing the hardware IPD (HP Reverb), the headset died on the operation table haha

I hope you had a decent discount from John
