Always best to obvious agree to disagree. We all can get so into (x) sometimes we don’t think before we react.
Maybe but we must take in consideration that Pimax open pre-order for the 8K-X and that backers must chose the upgrade plan with no final information / external review about the product. So any review that was made using even a pre-production headset including comparaison with current headset is welcome… so in my book it’s sub sub optimal for Pimax to do so.
further more the hardware of the 8k-X is final now with why not send review units to reviewers? oh no wait the firmware is not final and up to annonced spec ex 120hmz for the upscale rate refresh.
to be fair to Pimax, thats not what they said, for the first time in a very long time they’ve actually made the right decision, to not send it to reviewers UNTIL its actually complete and the right software so that reviews are actually of the final product and not bits and pieces and beta software
I’m very much ok with that decision too, but opening pre-order (months ago and take charge on the credit card!) and closing upgrade plan before any formal external review is done is annoying considering Pimax historic…
Guys guys… Please just let MRTV do his videos of whatever headset he prefers, and by the time we are ready to send out some review units with DMAS and KDMAS, Im sure he will do some 8KX content as well.
Our intentions are not - and has never been - to compete with G2, for very obvious reasons. These are two totally different headsets, apart from the most likely very similar SDE (or lack of it).
The people who just want some better or less SDE, go ahead a get a G2 which might be enough for you. If you want better or less SDE but also more than that, such as wide FOV, better tracking, eye tracking, modularity etc - then go with the 8KX.
And if you are currently not able to upgrade to a new headset (or can’t make up your mind), then just enjoy what you’ve got for the moment. The decision is not that complicated, after all.
The upgrade plans are not closed btw, they have just been limited to 500 units, to not further delay the pre-order shipments.
Hmm I do believe they’re going to compete. FoV+ modularity being clear advantages of the 8k-X, but colors, brightness, 100% distortion free lenses, refresh rates, and of course half the price being clear advantages of the HP. If tracking is really as good as MRTV seems to say, then Valve Index has a real problem (the G2 being better at almost everything) and Pimax will have some serious competition (although people who really care about FoV won’t see it that way of course and will still prefer the 8k-X)
I didn’t say “closed” I said “closing” wich imply possibly no formal review by neutral experimented third party of the 8K-X before the 31 july. Also I don’t think (except for 8K-X orginal backers) that backers upgrades to 8K-X ( not stretch goals) sould be priorize before pre-order ones. Once the kickstarter offer is fishined only order date should be considered for delivry so for my part the 500 units is limit is articifial, Pimax could easly have decided to ship current order up the Pimax event and then ship the new orders after the pre-order. Intented or not from the outside this 500 limits seems more like a economical measure but even then it’s his Pimax choice and prerogative. If I buy your product I don’t want Pimax to go belly-up because of a to generous offer taxing is finances…
The only thing I’m missing here is a real independant review of the final unit before I make the choice to send 1000$-1500US to Pimax.
Too early to claim “clear advantage” in the colors and brightness categories for the G2. Also disingenious to claim 100% distortion free image as an advantage at this point when it has a much lower FOV. By current reports distortion is not an issue in the normal FOV mode of the Pimax which is still much larger than G2. If you take it down to a comparable FOV with either the small or potato modes then it would be distortion free also, so there is no “advantage” there. From your list “price and refresh rates” are the only subjectively clear advantages that the G2 can be given right now.
Decision complicated no , difficult and annoying without comparisons yes
Price tolerance can by personal but certainly not subjective!
LOL too true!
Just check-out the vid from sebastian, those colors are stunning, even quite a bit better than the Index.
It’s not disingenious at all, it’s just a fact. People like me who hate distortion just don’t want to see it and then the G2 just holds an advantage there.
There’s still distortion at ‘potato’, mostly because the inner part of the lens has distortion too, not just the outer part (which gets cut off indeed by lower FoV). This gets very obvious when you close one eye and examine which part of the lens has distortion. That’s the main reason why the Artisan still has considerable distortion.
For me the OLED screens of the Odyssey+ created a lot of immersion vs the larger FOV of my 5k+ that I don’t used anymore. So color, Price, Fov are equaly weighted for my next headset purchase.
Man ever since using the StarVR I hate the colors of my Index. Just too flat, I want OLED. The G2 won’t be OLED but those colors surely look better than the index.
I understand you 100%, in this way the G2 is a contenter vs the 8k-X for me. Not to say I wouldn’t buy a OLED 8K-X V2.0 next
I assume you’re basing your conclusions above on your current experiences with the 5K+? We’ll just have to agree to disagree on projecting those same conclusions on the 8KX just yet. I personally had no distortion problems with my 5k+, but I know how personal that situation was so I’m not even going to worry about debating that one.
I’m not ready to claim a color victory from one video of the G2 either. Not withstanding the fact that videos will never convey the true experience in headset, there is also no comparable video of the final 8KX model yet. One of the current 8KX owners stated that his wife felt the colors in the 8KX were much better than the index when he had her compare them both. Just too soon to declare a colors winner.
Well, I think and (surely hope) that Pimax now feels that even higher resolution headsets will have greatly diminishing returns and negative impact on performance. Which means that I think (and surely hope) that they’re now going to focus on better colors and better lenses for their next flagship.
The problem here is what kind of distorsion are we talking about: the first 5K+ has the same distorsion problems my second 5K+ had wich is also the same distorsions showed by Sebastien in his video of the beta 8K-X. So from the outside it’s on Pimax side to prove this wrong… I don’t have any evidence it’s not the case with the current 8K-X final…
Now are those distorsion annoying for you or not is a totaly different and subjective discution…
It’s not just the video, it’s also what sebastian said in his Patreon only vids (I won’t reveal too much out of respect for his patreon). HP seems to have created a real beast. And honestly that’s good for everybody, we need VR to advance. I think Valve created the Index not just because they wanted to sell hardware but that they felt that in order for VR to grow more quickly it needed better hardware. So better headsets really is a good thing for everybody who loves VR.
