MRTV Pimax 8K Plus First Impressions

Dear Pimax community,

I have thoroughly tested the Pimax 8K Plus over the last few days. I played many games and did side by side comparisons with previous Pimax headsets but also with Reverb and Index. Here is the resulting video:

Disclaimer: I have a preproduction model, so all I say in this video is about this preproduction model

  • Display is fantastic, way better than original 8k and also 5k Plus
  • THIS is how the original 8k should have been like!
  • Added latency of 8k is GONE
  • Should you upgrade from 8k to 8k Plus: YES
  • Panel has the least SDE I have ever seen in a VR headset, period. Even better than StarVR
  • Lenses still the same: same warping/distortions like before
  • colors just okay, not as popping as in Index/Reverb
  • Same about blacks, typical LCD blacks, no big changes as to original 8k

I am looking forward to review the final 8k Plus and of course the 8k X. Glad to see that this is the 8k version I could truly recommend now!

Sincerely, Sebastian

You rock.

Going to watch it now

Thanks. Did you look out for whether those typical LCD blacks included the ā€œyellow glowā€ we know from previous models?

I have not really seen a ā€œyellow glowā€. Very comparable blacks to other LCD headsets, really.

Hmm, ok… Stands out immediately to me in my 5k+, as soon as it’s ever so little dark. Looks like one of those nation flags consisting of a cross - in this case black cross on yellow backgound…

Nice review! Those video’s look simply stunning. I think it will be cool to try the 8k+ or the X. But I’m also pretty sure it’s not going to leave me satisfied. I simply want it all  Index distortion/geometrical correctness + Vive OLED colors + pimax 8kX resolution&FoV. And until we have that in 1 headset I’m not going to be 100% satisfied with it and will be looking out for it. However, realistically speaking, I don’t see that happening any time soon and at least this will be a nice taste of the future and most likely will be fun to mess around with.

Looking forward to your review of the final version! Hopefully they can pimp up the colors a bit.

Glad to see what I backed come to fruition. Shame I’ll have to become a customer to get it.

But you can do it manualy in Pitool. All what they can do is bum up default manufactury lcd saturation presets and set it as a default.

Well as I understood from pimaxusa, they’re now using a different revision of the panel. But we don’t know what that means and it indeed might simply be different default values of contrast etc. The pics that Sweviver posted before seemed to have TOO much contrast so I’m hoping that that’s not their ā€˜solution’. Either way, I think expectations should be pretty low here. They’re not going to redesign the whole panel. Just tweak its parameters.

So does that mean you still see it?

Thanks for your thoughts Sebastian! I would’ve loved to have seen side-by-side comparisons with other headsets, particularly the 8K and 5K+. Perhaps you might consider this for your review of the final consumer version which I’m looking forward to

Interesting Video and thanks Sebastian for it.

A few points:
Colours - popping, I would hope that they don’t saturate the colours too much outside the realms of what we would encounter in real life. Anyway PiTool can tune them as well as Black Levels and Contrast to individual taste.

I assume all through the lens video was done at PiTool Render 1 and SteamVR 100%. If so, how did you find using the 8K+ in DCS and looking at objects in the distance?
Was in cockpit text easy to read from a default seated position, no need to zoom in on the labels etc?

If so and at that Render Setting then the 8K+ will be a substantial improvement over the 8K.

I am not sure about the thing with the8K’s latency but I would assume that would effect VR timings which would be shown by SteamVR. Anyway, I have got used to it If there are improvements - count me in.

As for distortion free FOV image, can try 2 things, run Small FOV at 130 Degrees or wait for the Eye tracking module and build a custom user profile with Normal or Large FOV. Given the lens design and combination of two elements, I don’t think you will clear up the outer areas of FOV but geometric distortions will be a thing of the past. Not that they are too bad now.

@mixedrealityTV is it possible to upload a higher resolution version?

This is going to make my wait for the 8KX even harder.

Wow, this is just the 8K+ … the 8KX is going to be incredible!

No SDE. We’re basically in the matrix.

Michael Abrash does not agree with you. He says we need 8k per an eye

The brain can be fooled by simpler tricks. Immersion is about the whole package. If you move freely and interact as if it were reality. You are more likely to believe its reality.

Just like that experiment where they feather a dummy arm and your arm at the same time then stab the dummy arm. The dummy arm doesnt have to look 1 to 1 to your own arm.

And Abrash is talking about a 140 degree HMD at 4kx4k per eye for that.

Thanks for the 1st impressions Sebastian! Hopefully they send you the finally version to review soon. In your option at what price would the 8k Plus have to be to be worth upgrading from a 5k+? We know the backers are supposed to be getting a discount, but just how big of a discount would it have to be to be worth upgrading?
