yeah with cv1 it was my worst gripe about it, I literally bought HMD wire once per 3-5 months for 100-150$ due to shipment or scalping until wires got out of stock.
with Q1 it was a real game changer as Echo is my most played game. No wires broken anymore, also it’s not twisting + I stopped hurt my hands due to excellent passthrough mode which stops rendering if you bypass the boundary, my right index finger finally got healed before my finger joint got constantly hit in the same place & hurt for months, it’s most dangerous game I ever play I never had issues with cable twisting & injuring in any other title.
The current Q1 suites all my needs for Echo, but I still curious how LCD looks like on Oculus lineup as their displays always were good apart of Rift S but it’s a Lenovo HMD, its why I ordered one, also I travel sometimes & when you want to hang out e.g. your friends in vrchat Q1 is laggish so XR2 & more RAM are welcome. I already saw TTL & it looks it isn’t that great but more or less ok & seems is better than Index at least for me, I mean the colour temperature & saturation, the G2 looked the most close to OLED colours (like sky colour in AC2 & overall colours look very similar to the TTL of OLED HMDs I have). I can cope with drab picture in dark scenes but I totally can’t enjoy poor contrast / dull / washed out colours displays, in bright games like in DCS everything looks so awful on LCD, I got tweaked index almost OK for me, but it had a lot of colour crush, I just don’t get why Im so sensitive in regard to contrast, colour & brightness as it seems almost everybody doesn’t care about it apart of few ppl, but I just start to stare on those awful perceived picture properties + also jagged edges which pentile hides a lot & can’t think anything else but how awful its.
I always wanted to butcher Q1 & get rid of front battery coz I use QC3.0 HTC ~10 000 mAH & it has really decent comfort with rubberised VRCover bracket + DAS + battery as counter weight, I can spend 5-8 hrs without issues on single charge, but if front battery would get removed it will be most comfort HMD I believe but to do so you need to cut the cloth which I don’t want to do & on Q2 I guess it has it in access + it has shorter case base which mean it will do even less pressure to your face, I guess Im 3-5 days away of getting my Q2 , it’s in customs atm.
Really liking this Quest 2. I can’t see the pixels personally and there’s no mura. Maybe every now and then I see some super faint vertical lines on some sections of some textures.
Games like RecRoom paintball were unplayable for me on Quest 1, and it’s so much smoother on Q2(natively, haven’t tried Rec Room through Virtual Desktop yet). Haven’t tried Echo VR yet(played years ago on my Vive, good times), but I think it’ll be awesome.
I even tried Virtual Desktop streaming SteamVR and it works waaaay better than I thought. Expert+ Beat Saber is playable. The Quest 2 screens sort of minimize the compression artifacts, and instead act like “free” anti-aliasing. Performance is amazing as well, but I’ve kept it on 72Hz. I do believe the contrast is a bit high in Virtual Desktop and that there’s some very slight bright color crush going on, but I’m thinking that should be fixable.
I’m most likely going to use my Quest 2 for roomscale games, and stick to my 8KX for sims/Squadrons (whenever the heck they make it playable).
Brightness and colors on the Quest 2 are better than Pimax 8KX. I’d say the Index colors were almost too saturated where the Quest 2 is just right for me. Pimax with the color-crushing settings can have better blacks. Waiting for that backlight setting with PiTool that is apparently in the works, and I think that would put the colors on par with the Quest 2.
Colors really are amazing with Q2. I’m really praying they fix steamvr integration when they update link.
It’s been confirmed steamvr won’t be broken, but the ‘rift’ environment is going away. Link will be integrated into the quest ‘home’ environment. When you run steamVR I’ve noticed serious lag in games compared to oculus. This happens to rift S too i think.
My theory is you’re running multiple overlays simultaenously, rift and steamvr (right home button = quest home, left home button = steamvr). You can somewhat lessen the impact by disabling steamvr home and lowering the overlay resolution in steamvr settings, but I get waaaaay worse performance playing alyx on quest 2 compared to a 5k… the 5k is running not only higher res, but 120hz. This may be due to me massively cranking the encode resolution recently. Will try default again tonight.
For anyone thinking of ditching their 5k+ for this, I wouldn’t do that just yet. We’ll see what they’re whipping up with the update to link, but as it stands this HMD is not as clear as a 5k+ or index. SDE wise its better, but not clarity wise. Needs more bandwidth!
it’s not amazing, it’s as it should be! I really don’t know how you can play games with 5k+/8K, it’s playable but it doesn’t feel right in terms of contrast/colours & overall perceived picture experience.
I also have the Quest2 and the 8KX with SMAS and can confirm without doubt the SMAS is terrible. The Q2 is much much better.
Also both the 8KX and Q2 have improved lcds compared to their predecessors. Both are so good its almost at OLED levels. But black levels will never be as dark as OLED.
Thats great , we really should start a 70+ ipd thread.
I am also one of the guys who was bkown away by the outer wilds. I havent tried it yet since I got the X but you have given me reason to dive back in.
I wasnt that impressed with the X when I first got it. I mean it was better tjan the 5k+ but not twice as good.
Basically didnt touch it for 2 weeks then tried it again after being blown away by the quest 2. And wow afyer uograding pitool to the latest version it looks the way I wished it looked day one.
Im not the only one to report this increase in quality over time. Seems like magic to me.
The X easily looks twice as good as it did when I tried it initially. When I go back to Pitool 261 again I will compare. (I have to go back if I want to play certain Oculus games since the head tracking is broken for a lot of oculus games in any version higher)
Yes I have a 10mm VR Cover and put it on the Quest 2 and it increased the FOV significantly. Only issue is my eyelashes touch the lenses a bit.
Haha I do that since working from home during covid and doing a ton of Zoom Calls. Yesterday i noticed that I had the camera on during a meeting and I could see that my feed looked like I was being censored.
I have recently started using Alexa so I my Quest 2 is the least of my concerns. LOL
I had that back in Feb 2019 I posted a thread about it. It would only happen when switching the hz of the display. They “fixed” it by now allowing us to change it per profile anymore.
Oculus released a link update over the ptc which adds bitrate adjustment! Glad to say at 400mbps and up compression artifacting was completely not noticable even under scrutiny - this typically came up in dark scenes. Skyrim was unbearable before imo. Needs a native res adjust and hz update but after seeing VD at native, this hmd will blow away the 5k in clarity with link.
i dont find q1 native resolution worse than 5k+, 5k+ has a bit moree details but SDE brick pattern breaks an eye, for sure index + level which is q2 will beat 5k+
Question for you since you own them both. My girlfriend wants to play some vr games with me. I own an 8KX and a 5K+ but only have the one PC. I tried connecting the 5K+ to my 3090 but the Pitool software will only recognize one headset. We thought if I sold the 5K+ and bought a Quest 2, that could possibly work. If we bought a Quest 2, would we be able to play steamvr games together? Sorry if it’s a dumb question, I really don’t know anything about the Quest 2.
Its funny when I was going back and forth to compare the X to the 5k+ i was wondering what would happen to pitool. I wish it could detect both headsets and i could make one active at a time.
Anyway yes sell the 5k+ while you can. (before the cracks appear)
you should be able to play multiplayer with the link cable
Yeah you may as well hop on the ptc. I have issues with link resulting in a black screen, I have to literally restart the quest every time then it works… Guardian is visible and works, but you literally can’t get out of the nothingness without a restart. I think that’s related to it being a ptc beta.
I also noticed less hitches actually. It’s very interesting how usb connection quality changes the experience. I’ve heard of people with certain extenders getting stuttering that you’d swear was the pc and it was usb issues. The use case for the expensive official link cable is becoming apparent
We’ve only played together on cross platform supported games like Rec Room. So both accounts are mine (one Oculus & one Steam) but both platforms join the same game server. There are probably better/more advanced ways to do it, but personally I’ve not tried beyond that.
My GF and I enjoy rec room this way. She plays the quest and I use my 5k. Pretty trippy when things match up and her avatar and real life person are in the same spot.
