IPD and Binocular Effect

So you are suggesting to twist the headset, i.e. applying some (mild) force to it to change the angle of one display/lens to the other ? Interesting idea, will try it later today or tomorrow.

This is why I am keen on trying another backer‘s headset to see if it is an issue of the headset being an outlier, or if it‘s me.

I would recommend this too, in addition to shifting the headset asymmetrically in all dimensions. Most people’s faces are asymmetric, so your eye positions might not be balanced. Try finding the best clarity for one eye (while keeping the other eye closed). Shift and/or slightly rotate the headset in all directions. Note the position. Now repeat with the other eye.

If things look good for each eye (independently), you may need to adjust the straps and padding, to shift the headset into the best placement for each eye. Note that your IPD setting should stay the same.

Well, that would work for all the repositioning efforts on the x,y & z axes, but when it only helps if I twist the 5K+ then there is no way how I could fix it in that position.

It would be an RMA, wouldn’t it. I don’t have these issues with my other headsets, nor do I remember seeing it in Gouda, so it should then be a case of a production error on my 5K+.

Actually, the headstrap I suggested might be able to help, since it could be adjusted so one side of the headset is higher than the other. The question is: Do you think it’s a headset defect or is it possible your eye positions aren’t symmetrical?

I have applied the Vive DAS for the time being, would like to stick with it - but if this is the only way to get rid off the issue, the DAS preference becomes secondary.

As I haven’t had this issue with any other headset, save for the Pimax 8K V2 back in October 2017 which was missing the IPD adjustment, I would tend to believe my eyes are on the same plane. It sure does look that way. And my IPD is evenly spread to the left and right at 32, 32 making it 64.

Today I watched some 3D 360 Videos that have some close-up shots, and I am pretty sure the smallest IPD (60mm) works best for me. They are quite uncomfortable if viewed at my measured IPD (71mm).

Edit: I realized that this does not mean much, as 3D 360 videos are notorious for their faulty editing which leads to seams, wrong 3D separation, and other unnaturalness.
