Ok here they are: first impression when I put the headset on is that the comfort is REALLY great and that there’s no light leak AT ALL! Which surprised me because I’ve never experienced a headset without light leak. However it soon turned out that I can not use the standard foam. Like others described, it kills the FoV. So I will need to do some mod like @NextGenVR did.
Also the headset really is not made for tall people like me. First of all the IPD is too low, which I already knew of course, I have 69.5, while this thing goes to 68.5. I used it for 30 minutes now but could already notice some eye strain. So probably will end up doing some mod here too, I just need to move the lenses 0.5 mm outside each haha. And the speakers seem to be too high above my ears, it seems the plastic is just a bit shorter than the index, although I’d have to compare if that’s even true, but it does feel like that.
But then, the image quality … WOOOOAAAH. Before trying this thing I really didn’t know what to expect. People like @mixedrealityTV raved so hard about the headset but others like @NextGenVR said it was only gradually better in the image department than the 8k-X. But now I can definitely say I 100% agree with @mixedrealityTV. This quality is just the bomb, it blows the 8k-X out of the water, it’s no comparison in my opinion. Sure the 8k-X is sharp but it’s also dull and there’s something off about the optics for sure and it never made me feel like I’m really in that virtual world. None of that with the G2! It’s just by far the most beautiful VR picture quality I’ve ever seen. It’s really like an Index but then with better resolution and better colors. It’s really all I had ever hoped for in VR picture quality. I wouldn’t mind if we’d be stuck at this level for the next few years, although I would want more FoV. About that … with the foam the FoV for me is BAD. Without the foam it’s actually pretty close to the index. So next thing for me is to do that mod, but man, I’m really short on time these days … I’m sure I’ll miss the 8k-X FoV but I’d be happy to trade that in for this picture quality upgrade. BTW @jojon if you haven’t ordered one, do it, this headset has your name written on it
How do you rate the lenses? Are they the same (Fresnel, sandwich type) as in Index? I believe, if that is the case, they might have only very faint @jojon written on them .
Hey Risa. Still need a lot more in depth time with this thing, these were only my very first impressions. And I have only very little time these days. I recommended this headset to @jojon since I remember he loved his index and had the same problems with the 8k-X as I had. This headset really feels like an Index V2, at least during my first impressions.
Thanks for the impressions! Sounds like you are really impressed with the G2. I would be curious to see it for myself but I really love my 8kx already. I don’t have any major issues with the optics and it doesn’t feel dull to me at all. The one thing that I don’t like about it is that the sweetspot is really small. It is really sharp and clear in a small area but drops off quickly when I move my eyes from that area. I really love having the FOV back though. I had moved from a 5k+ to an Index and know I remember how nice it was having the FOV. The Index FOV was ok but this is so much better again. There is a slight bit of distortion at the far edges but I don’t notice it unless I’m intentionally looking for it. I think I’d probably really like the G2 image but I know I’d be missing the FOV again. I play a lot of ATS and that game feels so much better with the added peripheral view in the 8KX. Enjoy the G2 though, glad it improved the VR experience for you!
For my own part, I think I’m going to have to replenish my petri dish of liquid assets first, though… Probably going to have to bleed that poor old wallet on a computer upgrade one of these days, too… =8O
I think I’ll stick it out a while longer, and see what may come next, that is either lighthouse native, or finally obsoletes both lighthouse tracking, and Index controllers. :7
Maybe we’ll be up to yet a new GPU generation by then, too. :9
As far as I know, the lenses are from the homegrown range Valve are trying to sell partners on, but not the same as in the Index, and presumably single element…
For future optics, I am hoping somebody has something not-too-far-away enough, that might do away with the intermediate, discrete, near-eye lenses altogether. :7
If you experience comfort and no light leak at all with the standard gasket, then your face must be narrower than mine. So that probably why we have different experiences.
It’s interesting though that even we seem to have different face types, both of us are not happy with the current facial interface because it kills the FoV. HP really missed out there, they should have made an eye relief system like the Index has. Now going to try some mods …
You might try this face cushion pack https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FCHYD6T/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. I’m using a 22mm right now with the facial interface removed but have to tighten the headset a good bit still to get the maximum FOV. I should get my 18mm today so I’ll let you know how it is. I agree that the G2’s picture quality is what I’ve always wanted from a headset. Blows everything else out of the water, including the Index and Pimax 8kX. The only headset I have that’s rivaling it for my use is the Quest 2 since it can do wireless and it still looks quite good.
Edit: The 18mm interface seems to be perfect… gives the maximum FOV without having to tighten the straps too much
My tests are about the same as shown on the fov database for the modded G2. Your video said you got up to about 98 degrees before you added more comfort and it was 94-96. I actually got it to 100 but same as you was very uncomfortable.
Here’s the chart, it has a fair amount of sample size now:
Honestly I haven’t even bothered trying it out. People raved about changing the color/brightness options before, but after messing around with those quite a bit I actually ended up with factory settings being the best. Cranking up contrast will just oversaturate it. And I’m pretty sure cranking up the backlight will yield its own problems. However if you believe it will make me change my mind, tell me which settings I should use and I’ll try it on the X.
Yesterday I did another A/B between the headsets. I found it very hard to quantify what it exactly is that I don’t like about the X. @jojon actually best said it like this, when he put his Index on again after having spent some time with the X:
“Well, ho-lee smoke! The lower resolution in the index is painfully apparent, just as expected, but other than that, the experience was like stepping out of a dim and smoky opium den, into fresh mountain air and daylight. whilst taking off some bottle-bottom glasses of some mad scientist’s, that had for some reason ended up on my face.” That’s exactly how I experience it. The X also gives me eyestrain pretty quickly, even after having tried a bunch of settings. I think it’s basically the lenses that ruin it, more so than the display panel.
