HTC is back! Vive pro 2 with 2.5k * 2.5k per eye @ 120 hz

Ok everybody try this:

  1. Opt out of steamVR beta and make sure you’re on the latest nvidia drivers
  2. Set vive to ultra or extreme, SS to 500%, it should show render resolution I think 7k*7k
  3. Now in the SteamVR, stand outside on the last tile, next to the tree and look at the text inside

Of course make sure you’re in the sweetspot. Now do the same for the 8k-X. I swear my VP2 now even looks clearer than the 8k-X (I can read the text easier). BTW of course make sure you set your 8k-X to 72 hz or it wont work with latest nvidia driver (black screen)

I’m now 100% convinced that if anybody experiences any blurryness, he’s either not in the sweetspot or has it’s software not set up right (or, the vive console is buggy which also definitely seems to be the case). It’s not a lens problem, nor is is a panel problem. In fact, I do see SDE too now every now and then, when I really really look for it, just like with the 8k-X. So there’s no odyssey/index like diffusion filter, of that I’m also sure now.

BTW I am on a 3090, not sure if that makes any difference, but it might. I could very well be that the vive driver is doing some auto stuff based on your hardware. Which would be really stupid of course, but who knows …

@Djonko that is the thing those of us without a 30 series card cannot do. We are limited to the high mode in the VP2. The ultra and extreme settings are grayed out and cannot be selected. That is why @cazman321 and myself wanted to know what your sharpness was like when using the VP2 in “high” mode vs the 8KX. That would give us an idea of rather or not the lesser sharpness that we are seeing is due to the 1080ti that we have.

aah gotcha! Ok will do the same thing then in ‘high’ and will let you know

Thanks that will be a big help for us!

Ok I just tried it and I now see where you guys are coming from  BTW I could not set it to 500%, that translates to 7300x7300 but then SteamVR somehow doesn’t start I get black screens.

So I set it slightly lower so that I get 6950*6590, SteamVR then starts and when I do the test above, I can not read the text at all, it’s a blurry mess!

So definitely a big difference between high and ultra/extreme. The 8k-X definitely is sharper than the VP2 on ‘high’ ! But on ultra/extreme my VP2 looks slightly sharper than my 8k-X. Although it’s not much difference, I’d say < 10% sharper.

Yes i saw this too… on high its not good at all…even if you set the resolution in steam to 100% on ultra and 150 % on high the ultra settings a way sharper

Yeah agreed. Even if you crank up SS to 500% on ‘high’ it still looks blurry.

Also there seems to be a bug where the vive console sometimes reverts to ‘auto’. I think it happens when you switch headsets. So at least that had me confused for some time, all of a sudden things looked blurry again and I couldnt figure out why, but it turned out it was that.

So we at least have figured out some of the reaons for different experiences:

  1. Default foam will limit the FoV
  2. lower than 30xx GPU’s will result in much more blurry image (compared to 8k-X) because they can’t use ultra/extreme mode which is really necessary to get a sharp image.
  3. Not being in the sweetspot will cause some extra blurry/glare like effect

@Djonko Thank you so much for testing this out! I figured that was the case. Wish I had some idea of when I’d be able to get a GPU upgrade. I really like the VP2 but it’s a real shame that HTC’s drivers limit the clarity so much on the 1080ti. I know that the card itself is capable of so much more because I’ve seen it on my 8KX.

Even though it’s sorta blurry on High, the hardware pixel count makes some things better. I found myself enjoying DiRT Rally 2.0 more than on Index. With the Index, my eyes were struggling to keep focus, even with Reshade. I guess they struggle between staring at the image vs staring at the pixels, so while the clarity is nicer on Index, the pixels still get in the way. 8KX of course is 75Hz, but I used it more for DiRT than the Index since less SDE seems more important for racing.

Just for the record: I used the ultra mode with my 2080Ti; I believe you can only use it with RTX cards.
(still for me the acuity was below the G2 and somewhere in the region of the 8KX, although it lost its acuity faster than the G2/8KX when not looking straight ahead into the sweetspot)

Yes that sounds about right

I think I posted on your Reddit thread too…but after messing with all my headsets, The Pro 2 is not worth it to me with a 1080Ti and it’s getting returned. Not to mention, the sound still hums, and HTC used to have the best binocular overlap, and went to the worst, which kills immersion a bit, coupled with that glare, it’s not worth it. Also, the sound is only decent at 100%…KDMAS is much better. I think the Vive 1 was so immersive because of good binocular overlap (93 rendered) + ~110/110 FOV.

  1. 8KX is the best for seated games for the extra FOV/sense of speed. Large FOV is amazing and immersive, just want a 30 series so I can use Wide FOV + some FFR with decent resolution and 90Hz.
Edit: While the below was true, I may have recently found a perfect angle that lets me finally enjoy the headset, using thin foam with extra padding on the bottom only. I discovered this by doing an “extreme” angle which felt like the headset was an inch off of my cheeks…turns out that’s kinda what I needed to keep the lenses parallel to my eyes. I previously only used the thick foam because it looked “better” but still not perfect, because the further you go from the lenses, you lose clarity and things warp differently… Now I don’t have warping/distortions at all, FOV/overlap measurements line up to HMDQ, world scale looks perfect, and no need for any IPD adjustments in Pitool. The only thing I need is some padding on the sides of the headstrap to keep the headset stable.

Unfortunately the optics don’t play nice with my eyes when standing/moving around in roomscale. I spent hours with different padding, trying contacts instead of glasses, and different pairs of glasses that I have from over the years, trying to enjoy roomscale but the lenses warp/distort in some areas and it’s uncomfortable when moving my eyes left/right/up/down, but looking straight ahead for racing, awesome! I got the distance from my eyes to a spot where the edges don’t distort. I think the key is getting it far enough where any further would blur the edges of the screen. Any closer and I see distortion. Getting my eyes as close to the lenses as possible warps all edges and is unplayable, although the clarity is absolutely amazing in the center. I can probably enjoy roomscale enough if I don’t move my eyes a lot…but what’s the point with all that FOV?

  1. Wireless Quest 2 Air Link looks better than Pro 2 in “High” mode, which the Pro 2 Wireless can’t even go up to. Latency is very not noticeable when using Index controllers and Air Link.
  2. 144hz for fast paced games is ideal w/ Index (resolution not a huge deal when you’re moving a lot).

With that said, I’ve decided to use all 3 to get the “best” out of each one:
Edit, roomscale setup may become 8KX after my edit above…Quest 2 probably just for standalone Oculus Exclusive use for now…
So now my “room scale” setup is Quest 2 + Air Link / combo with Index Controllers for tracking to minimize latency of the input
and of course the tracking is better. Modded the Vive DAS onto it with velcro (lol). Also, it has the best binocular overlap, so the optics are best for roomscale and moving my head/eyes a lot.

8KX for “seated/simracing” for FOV. Better binocular overlap than Pro 2, worse than Quest 2, but if I’m sitting down and looking straight ahead in sims, there’s no need to look around often.

Index for Beat Saber/Ping Pong/Pistol-Whip/fast-paced games for 144Hz.

Kinda satisfied with that until something irresistible comes around that combines most of that all together.

Yeah I returned my VP2 also. With my 1080ti it just had really poor clarity which really made me realize how sharp my 8KX really is with the 1080ti. The 75hz setting for the 8KX has turned out to be a blessing for getting good sharpness with my 1080ti setup.

Tbh, even with my 2080Ti I am wondering if I will even bother to use the 90 Hz option if it should become available with the next PiTool/fw upgrade: I didn’t notice any serious downside with being at only 75 Hz, and any higher frequency equals having to dial down the graphics settings in the games which I am not keen on - the experience with the 8KX offers so much room for further improvement if the GPU can handle it, but going the other direction seems like a wrong decision to me. Especially where we are losing 30% for parallel projections on some games anyhow…

Disclaimer: I have to say though that I don’t play Beat Saber or other fast paced games with the 8KX; if I play them it would be with the G2 or Quest 2. So my comments are of course based on slower motion experiences.

I nevertheless agree it is great that we have the options with the different refresh rates.

I ended up returning the the Pro 2 and getting a new 8kx. For me, the Pimax is hands down the best out there, I was able to get the colors extremely close to the the pro 2 which was literally the one thing that headset had going for it.

Just Wish we could have software that would enable PP on its own like the Index does. Hate having to restart.

There is, it’s called Cloud Profiles in Pimax Experience.
If someone has created a Cloud Profile for a game with PP enabled, it will enable it automatically :+1:

Since the latest alpha firmware my 8kx beats my htc pro 2 too again…I only keep my pro 2 for the wireless stuff… Because i have a yaw vr 2 coming
Or i sell my pro 2 for 600 euro and buy one later again when i have the yaw vr 2.
