The Index has stacked lenses too and looks pretty sharp to me. The StarVR indeed is really blurry
Well here is the valid question. Does the Vive Pro 2 come with 2 foams? If it doesn’t then using a thinner foam is essentially a mod as it is not something that came stock.
That is why as I said it is best to to do an out of box stock review. After the primary review is complete do the ingenuity of mods. That being said if it came with 2 face foams then yes the review was not completed fairly.
A pimax headset can have a much better experience for many with Mods and setting tweaks. Mods being applied is not an out of box experience and prior to PE being out neither is tweaking things beyond defaults.
Many things can be improved considerably but a base decent experience from products should begin with stock. With Mods and tweaks enhancing the already decent xp. Many of us are modders and tweakers. However most consumers want a quality xp out of the box.
It may depend on how they are implemented. The first HTC Vive was not developed by HTC, but Valve. Valve were the engineers, the ones that figured out essentially everything. HTC was used as partner for Valve to manufacture the headset, less risk
Even though HTC is using stacked lenses, the implementation is likely different hence the discrepancy of of the image output.
Could indeed very well be. Can’t wait to try it myself although expectations are quite tempered by now …
I may snag one unit. I was testing the StarVR One yesterday with my prescription glasses and actually made the image considerably sharper. The issue that I have with it is that the headset is a power hog. For having lower resolution my 8kX runs with better frame rate than the StarVR. It could be poor implementation. I will likely get a 3090 and see how that one performs.
Notable differences, my second unit of the StarVR is considerably better, and no mura. That much improved the image quality substantially for me. On objects relatively near, environment’s where is not required to focus far into the distance the StarVR yields a better image for me due to the colors and wider FOV, while retaining good image quality. However, on open spaces like Robo Recall in the middle of the street, you can see the differences in image resolve with the 8KX and the advantages of higher res headsets.
Is clarity means the same as sharpness?
I see that G2 has a little better clarity, is it also means that sharpness is better in the center or only sweet spot is bigger?
Clarity consist off several factors, sharpness is one of them, how big the sweet spot help with the overall subliminal feel of clarity, lenses here are a major factor. Making sure the lenses and the software provide the image convergence to create stereoscopy (the 3d depth) properly. Obviously having good panels with high resolution help
I already told it like thousands of times in my replys: why on earth should a professional reviewer use a mod in the reviews? That doesn’t make sense! There is only this one face foam in the Vive Pro 2 Box and only with THIS a review should be done! Reviewing with a modded face foam or with anything else modded will result in an invalid review!
You don’t review a normal car with an exchanged racing car motor and tell the people it’s very fast, do you?
So I can confirm Road to VR did a great review, I can confirm everything. Also I can confirm that I will do all future reviews WITHOUT ANY MODS.
I don’t say anything against showing additional videos with some modding advices, I will do this as well, but NOT in the actual review.
Thanks.
100% confirmed, thanks!
I am not on your case. I liked your review. I think it was a fair view of the pros and cons of the headset
Your 100% right, reviews should be made with what you get in the box. No modding. Videos about modding should be done after the initial review of the product was done not before.
If everything goes right i have my first unit today…
I am very curiuos…
Cool, keep us updated. I am trying to avoid from purchasing the Varjo
Me too. I thought the VP2 could be the short term solution
There’s no reason why initial reviews should be anything but what you get stock out of box. It’s unreasonable to think reviewers should be thinking and passing off DIY jobs as the norm. If the VR market is going to mature, the manufacturers need to deliver more well rounded products.
If HTC could have gotten much better press by including a thinner face cushion as an alternative, that’s on them! It’s their problem they didn’t do that. Hopefully lesson learned next time.
I mean the president of HTC went on Twitter to confirm the fov, knowing what they’re actually shipping in the box.
While I agree with Voodoo and Benz from Road to VR, there is a portion of buyers if not a great deal who are willing to do some minor mods if the improvements are considerable. I mean, switching for a thinner foam is hardly a mod.
In any case, there are few people that mention improvement with the thinner foam. Will wait for consumer reviews before considering the unit seriously
A follow up review that goes over DIY absolutely makes sense and it’s great content. However there’s no reason why the initial review should be muddied up with such.
Vodoo still didn’t want to upgrade his colours and hz via firmware on his 8k X , I really don’t get it 🤷
It’s like saying I won’t update my smartphone to android 12 because it didn’t came out of the box with that ()
oh absolutely, that is why is good to not be the first adopter. wait till enough people try the new product then make a decision then
It may not be a difficult to implement mod, but due to the simple fact that it requires the customer to purchase a fitting foam elsewhere, without any instruction or guidance whatsoever from HTC going with the purchase, it is what I would consider a mod - an improvement independently developed by the community to address a shortcoming or release greater potential of a product where the producer apparently was not aware or willing to afford that.
Again - the thinner foam you are referring to is not included in the box by HTC. Why would Ben Lang have to acquire a foam from some other source (be it any other headset he happens to have or VRCover, etc.) when he is reviewing a product which is being sold at a high three-digit price (and even being dubbed ‘Pro’ to sort of rub salt into the wound) ? This is not 2014, where you would consider to buy a device a chap put together in his garage and now is selling off Development Kits. This is supposed to be a very refined product, after all it’s the 4th iteration of the Vive (og Vive, VP1, VP Eye, VP2).
