Half-Life: Alyx - best VR game ever?

I haven’t timed it but I would guess close to a minute.

Can I move steam games to a different drive without reinstalling them ?

I didn’t know these m2 drives were so small .

Yes. I’ve done it.

Here are 2 guides that look reasonable, but I followed a different one (a couple of years ago and I don’t remember the link).

Ok here goes,

I’ve only played a few hours so far but I feel like this game is one definitely one of the best games i’ve played in terms of sheer quality, environment and story. It’s clear that these dev’s took their time to create a AAA experience.

I put this game up there with Asgards Wrath and TWDS&S

however there is one strange decision on their part that hold it back from being the “best VR game ever made”

The main gripe i have early on, is the inventory management

I expect this kind of thing from Bethesda not Valve.

Having to push a button to change weapons and click to change back to your hand is really bad.
They really should have made it like Raw Data, Arizona Sunshine, Asgards Wrath … and pretty much every VR game that isn’t DOOM VFR

A backpack that holds nothing but resin is silly.

Its so odd to reach over your shoulder to pull out an ammo clip.

  1. Button / menu to switch and let go of weapon
When you are in an intense situation and you need to think fast it is so un-intuitive to click a button , hold it up to select the right weapon. reach over your shoulder to grab a clip when you run out of ammo while clicking a button to empty the magazine. put said clip into the gun and then pull back the thingy.

  2. You have to choose handedness at start.
Really? I’m right handed. But so many times you might be holding a propane tank in your right hand and lets say you want to shoot a barnacle I have to let go of the container push the button to switch to my gun why?

Why can’t i just reach to my waist pull the gun out into my left hand and shoot.?

What they should have done is ammo goes on your belt. The gun holsters to your left or right side wherever you choose to put it.

Over your shoulders are two slots to equip larger weapons. If you need to change any more weapons you can pull out the backpack a-la walking dead and then you can see everything you are carrying.

Access to resin should only be from the backpack you have to intently pull out.

Also what the hell is a wrist pocket? haha so dumb

So yes other than this tremendously sill oversight ( we can only hope the modders fix this ASAP) its probably one of my favorites.

Store warranty covered it

Thanks @neal_white_iii it worked like a charm and the levels are loading a lot faster . I will move some more VR games onto it .

I actually like how the interface is basic . It’s just like an old school FPS but in VR with awesome graphics .

This is the first game that uses VR controllers that actually appeals to me. :+1: I’ve played all the Half-Life games (incl. Blue Shift, Black Mesa, etc.).

Currently, I only play seated VR games with HOTAS, steering wheel, etc., so I don’t have any VR controllers. Unfortunately, I’ve had even more unexpected expenses, so now isn’t a good time to buy Index controllers and another base station. Besides, there’s an 8 week shipping delay.

I’m sure I’ll get it at some point, but for now, I need to wait. :slightly_frowning_face:

Well to each his own… but on a old school shooter i would just hit the 1 to 9 keys on a keyboard. I think the menu could have worked for me if you didn’t need to push the button to switch back to your empty hand.

I hate that. Its unnatural.

Also not being able to switch the gun to a different hand. Should be illegal in the VR game industry. It stands out as a flaw because I can interact with the environment with two hands no problem

I can pick up a steel pipe from the ground and move it from hand to hand no problem.

but i cant swap hands with the pistol?

I played the whole game sitting down which is why I like the the way the weapon wheel works . I think you will really like Half -life Alyx . There are a lot of sights and sounds you will remember from the previous Half life games . It definitely feels like the good old days but in VR .

Yep not being able to switch the gun to my left hand when I want to is a bummer . I hope they fix that soon .

We need to be able to switch the gun to the left hand in a fire fight so we can access the wrist holder for health or the grenade .

Buy an NVME SSD, if you haven’t got a port for it on your motherboard just buy a PCI-E adapter (Ive got two of the myself)
edit and not to self: remember to not reply to any post before reading the remaining posts

Hehe yes that’s what I purchased mainly because I was too lazy to install another SATA ssd because of the access to my SATA ports . The m2 port is just over the video card which I can access a lot easier than the SATA plugs .

Anyone have world scale issues? Everything seems just a bit too big on my 8K.
Was hoping there was a world scale setting.

It looks fine on my Oculus s . I sold my 5k+ last year and I am waiting for my 8kx so I can’t really say if Pimax headsets have an issue . From what I have been reading the only complaint is that it needs parallel projections which means there is a performance hit .

As someone who has never played any half life game before (I played GMod, that’s about it) should I play them first? Or can I play this game without knowing the story?

Garrys Mod + VR mod are for half life 2 as far as know . Half-life Alyx is a prequel to HL2 so I would play HLA first .
