I guess this question can only apply to those who have played Half-Life: Alyx. I’ve seen a few reviews that describe it as ‘best VR game ever’. My gut feeling is if you are a fan of a specific genre (eg racing or flight sims) then probably not.
Personally I have been wowed by it and is currently my favourite first person shooter.
What do you guys think? Has anyone tried it and been disappointed or just not liked it?
As a player of the original Half Life, Counter Strike for many years, and Half Life 2, I have to say Valve absolutely nailed it with Alyx. I got the same feeling I had when first playing Half Life, only this time as an experience in VR. I played for a couple hours yesterday, and when my girlfriend got home, I started over to show her the game. Playing through the beginning a second time was just as awesome. The game is simply stunning on the Pimax. The visuals are the best yet, the lighting is great, sound is top notch, combat action is fantastic, the motion capture of the creatures and NPCs is extremely realistic, and the story is great. Actor/comedian Rhys Darby adds a great bit of humor at the right moments. It is by far the most advanced and impressive VR game to date, and likely will be for quite some time.
The original made Steam what it is. Was the most played online game in the day. Having played the entire franchise many times, this is a dream come true. All thumbs here, so 10 thumbs up.
I have to put my hands up and admit despite playing games for over 40 years (started with an Atari console & pong), have never played a Half-Life game before . Which makes it even more impressive they made a game I love. Normally the horror elements would have put me off (going through the dark tunnels with a small torch was not my idea of fun). Really liked the same sense of humour, technically amazing and agree with you guys they nailed it
I’m also worried in raising the bar they may have made it hard to play some future VR games (was looking forward to the first person shooters Medal of Honour: Above and Beyond & Phantom: Covert ops).
That’s true of all my flat world games and has been for almost 4 years. There were already VR games that I found fugly, but still those i will play despite now being diminished somewhat.
Good play is good play even when the graphics aren’t equal. Having Index controllers has me playing games like In Death regularly, despite the graphics being bland.
I’m running it at 90hz, with PP on, using a 2080ti on Ultra settings. I was able to play for a few hours last night and it ran perfectly. I didn’t have any glitches or issues except for flickering when I first got the game, but that was fixed once I enabled PP and rebooted the Pitool service/Pimax HMD.
Exactly this. Once I’ve completed Alyx … there’s nothing else left to play. That sucks.I can’t go back anymore to the usual sh*tty games after Alyx. Easily best VR game ever and that also makes it best game in general ever since I love VR. Not sure what else even comes close.
Not surprisingly it’s smashing VR records. Unsure what impact Covid-19 had (more people at home but some of them couldn’t buy the HMD they want).
This comment did make me smile “I was kinda wondering what I was doing playing VR while on COVID-19 quarantine, choosing to escape into a VR world to do what??? To go walking into a quarantine zone???”
I have nearly finished Half-life Alyx and it’s been a fantastic game especially if you are a Half-life fan . As soon as I finish I will play it again just for the eye candy . The only problem I had was very slow load times from my standard hard drive so I am heading out to buy a 1tb m2 ssd to swap it to . I hope that speeds it up.
