Friendly Advice With Sugar On Top: Do NOT Go For The 8K!

First off, they’re not black.

They’re ever so slightly off colour spots in a regular pattern. On white, they appear slightly blue. MRTV’s through the lens shots aren’t as zoomed in, although you can juuuuust make them slightly out on the white background letterboard/eyechart shots. They’re so small, and barley discoloured, I don’t think 99% of people will ever notice them in regular use.

Basically to capture them at all, you have to have the headset and camera unmoving and stable, extremely zoomed in, and take a photo, and even then you only really see them on certain colours. In real world, when your head can’t be that still… honestly, nobody will notice them. If you know what to look for, and you pull some of the zoomed out photos/videos, you can make them out barely on some colours.

Nope, we didn’t talk about that part.

Okay, but how do you explain this though:

I’m kinda glad I’m not in the next batch of testers. I’m looking forward to seeing what 100 new sets of eyes come up with, I think everything about these sets now is so damn close that people’s personal physiology are making a difference. Don’t get me wrong… I do want my headset soon… but I am glad I’ll get a lot of extra feedback before I have to choose.

edit you can see the dots on the light spots in those pics for example:

I can only tell you that for the normal use, without zooming in, I cannot see the dots and that the 5L Plus is simply better. Alright guys, bed time!

About gate meter image.

upper is text without moving your face to the meter, the bottom image you try to look closed to the gate.
So 5k can read text easily although you stay so far.

swevier try to zoom for showing that the smaller text on far distance has better rendering in 5k+, Sebastian ever show that you can read text on medicine bottle in transference game although it is so far.

@mixedrealityTV, I think Oculus go have pixel similar to Acer (horizontal + vertical), but I always see vertical line of pixel (or may some sde) when I move my head on Acer. But I can’t remember too much about oculus go while I return the headset to my friend. I want to know that the pixel or sde is stable to show or not?, can it is easier to see while we move our head?

the problem thats happening here though is possible within 5 seconds from this post there could be a sudden rumour of the 8k suddenly having a software upgrade that makes the 8k as clear as the 5k+

Throwing the balance around yet again on the war against 5k+ and the 8k

like a game of ping pong…

I’ve struggled with this train of thought as well but as it stands I won’t delay my decision anymore on this possibility. I’m in the 3000s so I still have time before I make a decision but if nothing new comes to light about this from now until i get my email then I will go 5k+ and not look back!

Can 5K+ produce this kind of image?

@mixedrealityTV Thank you Sebastian for your hard work and clear recommendation!

I assume this was the first “official” statement that the 8K definitely has no full RGB display.

https://youtu.be/6OmsG7nyRTE?t=23m52s

After it’s obvious that the 8K performs significantly worse than the 5K+ primarily due to the lack of full RGB display and a bad upscaling process, did you talked to Robin about how and to what extent the 8K can be improved in the future?

And why this fundamental characteristic of the 8K display is still kept secret of Pimax???

Especially if this is the reason why the 8K performs so bad against the 5K+. This leads to the impression that it does not matter to Pimax. And the switch to 5K+ seems to be supported from Pimax indirectly.

If contrary to the announcement the 8K does not have a full RGB display and this is not officially confirmed - but at the same time a decision has to be made in which it wasn’t clear why exactly the 8K is doing so much worse than the 5K+, holding back such an important message to the own backers is simply incomprehensible!

Open for positive disclosures about the 8K the former flagship of Pimax. @PimaxVR @deletedpimaxrep1

Especially for 8K backer who have already chosen, it’s hard to believe if the image quality, the distortion, the wobbling and the general blur is as strong as described by @mixedrealityTV today. It looks like the 8K has serious technical defects which is not commented by Pimax so far.

To keep Kickstarter backers sane, please rename the 8K headset, ‘8K+’ or we’ll all go loopy by October.

Straight to the source. You are a legend!!

Still getting the 8k, I backed Pimax to get the less SDE possible and I’ll stick to that.

Yes, please everyone get you 5K+ :smirk:

Wrong, everyone get the 8K. @Skyrimer and @light are right. 8K critics are waaaaaay out to lunch. Just get the 8K already, all of you.

Looks like I’m going to go with the 5K+
But I have some time before I get mine (eg 3000 something backer) for them to fix the 8k and change my mind.

It comes down to this.
There will be a higher spec screen unit coming out in the next 12 months by somebody.

Either a kickstarter or from industry.
There is talk of high spec screens coming out all the time.

Probably by someone like Apple or even Oculus.
But you will need 2 of the 2080ti cards for each eye.

When you listen to John Carmacks talk on the design of the Oculus Quest.
You see what is missing from the design in the Pimax headsets.
The detail that goes into the colours, the screens, everything.

And when it comes down to it. The Pimax unit isn’t that much money.
If it works, it works. If not it goes on the pile of things I tested.

Would be nice to get footage to the issues to make making a decision more profound. Any chance on that @mixedrealityTV? (If the latest videos have that sorry didn’t watch them since I got my eyes laserd) .
Without being disrespectful at the moment there are pro and Cons for either models.

Could be weird camera noise reduction? Would need to see RAW images.

“not much better” means better, that’s enough for me. My susceptibility to this problem doesn’t need to be the same as yours, I have my eyes, you have yours.

Thank you for the tests you did, very useful, but they were not meant to give us an order, but to let us make a choice.
