Wow. That explains what your talking about. SDE on the upscaled 4k panel looks near perfect
Especially considering the 8K has the new updated CLPL panels it’s disappointing the 8k achieves nothing over 5K. I’ll be waiting to hear results of the 8KX before I consider taking the Pimax option. By that time there will likely be other OLED options on the horizon. 2019 should be an epic year for VR
Difference is really day and night between the Vive Pro and the Pimax 4k. That’s what the difference between the Pimax 5k and the Pimax 8k should have been.
Maybe it’s not bad unscaling in 8k. It’s just that no one have the graphics to support it. Or maybe the SDE pattern is just terrible in 8k or the panel is just not good.
Those look like screen shots, not through the lens photos (which probably wouldn’t strangely match the input res of the HMD)… So doesn’t show the upscaling.
Like I said we need to compare Rgb with Rgb. I wager the Lenovo wmr lcd headset might look sharper than the 4k & has the subpixels to properly compare.
Rgb has a 1/3 more sub resolution.
It is reported on 1080p depending on a variety of things looks better on a 1080p TV vs a 4k TV upscaling 1080p to 4k. But of course is subjective to the viewer. But technical analysis the native panel looks better than upscaled on a clinical level.
@frc I believe posted a good article of producers/directors irritation of TVs ruining the desired effect with things like TrueMotion.
Well also consider this. The Small FoV in theory has less resolution on the 5k+ vs Vive pro.
We could guess that if main view is 50% that this Res will be 25601440 overall for small FoV mode vs Vive Pro at 28801600. But reports say the SDE is a lot better than Vive Pro?
Why? Vive Pro has a 2/3 of the subpixels
288016002=9,216,000 Vs
256014403=11,059,200
@Sjef Which picture is which headset?
When comparing I’d like to know which one is which.
For me it is not as clear as for most of the people in this thread.
Same. I use vorpX with 1.1.92 and it looks and performs surprisingly well (maybe because it’s letting steamvr do all the rendering). I haven’t needed to add any SS, since the upscaled 1440p really seams to do a good job.
Instead of SS, I use high resolutions in game (ex: 3200x2400) which seem to downsample to 1440 quite effectively (as you can still see improvements the higher resolution you feed it). Pair this with post process sharpening from vorpX, and I get very clear and detailed image. It even runs slightly faster than on my CV1, but looks much better.
My 4k experience makes me believe we are not seeing the true 8k potential in these tester reviews. Perhaps it’s not more SS that is needed, but simply a sharpening filter to clear up the softness a bit.
I really hope the 8k works comparably well to the 4k, upscale and SDE wise, since this is what gave me faith to back the 8k to begin with.
In later Piplay versions when the brightness slider was introduced, it took away the usage of the PiLogger Tool which allowed more options for brightness adjustment.
