Lol yeah I have no experience there, so can’t speak to that…
Damn That is the only thing I’m really concerned about having to deal with Their software,I’m not exactly a techie.
The co-founder did post on FB a new ipd tool they had just developed. Apart from that this recent review is far more promising. I hope Robin Weng is doing everything he can to improve the final with all his kickstarter money!!
Confirmed changes so far
Mechanical IPD
Improved lenses
Displayport 1.4
Improved displays
You said you were not interested anymore when it turned out the 8k didnt support native resolution, are you still going to back it now ?
BTW those changes look good, that’s my final hope, that the new prototype will be any good. In that case I won’t cancel my pledge.
LOL I remember Piplay version 1.2 … man was a pain in the A** !!!
Yeah that was the period a lot of forum users left and sold their pimax, I think up to v1.2.76 ? Let’s hope things will be different this time.
I am sure that it will, let´s time talk about it, anyway you took (Pimax X - May 2018)the long road with this.
Here’s another impression from another thread people might have missed from @eminus
"The only titles offered were the Leap Motion Mirrors app on the 5k and Fruit Ninja and BigScreen on the 8k. I had some IPD issues on the 8k where the center of the screen was slightly out of focus but turning my eyes a bit in the headset showed great clarity. I didn’t notice any screen door effect and the resolution felt like going from a full screen Vive to a wide screen PiMax. Text was noticeably sharp in the virtual desktop on BigScreen and the LCD brightness wasn’t an issue to me.
Some others took issue to the slightly dimmer brightness of the LCD.
The prototype controller we used for the demo of Fruit Ninja was not great. While it had button party to a Vive wand, it was definitely not as comfortable to hold and the build quality was a bit lacking. I completely understand that it was a prototype but it definitely needs improvement.
I really enjoyed the hand tracking with the 5k and would have loved to try a different demo title on that headset but we were restricted to Mirrors due to the hand tracking module.
The Mirrors app also made it hard to judge the resolution and clarity of the 5k but the wide field of view still impressed me and I didn’t notice warping just a bit of blurriness."
So that’s four reports from SF with no one complaining about the warping from earlier reviews. I still have some reservations about screen brightness and performance, but overall I’m a lot more hopeful.
Im completely open to it. This is the most trusted positive review I’ve seen. best part is what he posted at the start
“I have backed the kickstarter, ordering the 8k headset, and plan to use my vive controllers and base stations. I feel it’s important to mention this due to a cognitive bias we humans have called “Post-purchase rationalization”. It is possible that my backing could have influenced my experience, but I will do my best to be fair to both the Pimax headsets as well as the Oculus and Vive I currently own”
They have untill the end of the month to show what were getting
It’s turning into a cliffhanger that’s for sure
I don’t see that post in the 8k vr club ?
What happens if this thing smashes through the wall?
This review
Yeah but you said something about a FB post ? That thread is from reddit.
Follow the co founder Veni Tang. He posts some interesting stuff
I thought the brightness was fine on both, some thought it was a bit dim. If I had to guess I’d say it’s similar to the Rift (a bit dimmer than the Vive).
I don’t know that Fruit Ninja’s stuttering was caused by bad Pimax drivers. The SteamVR Async Reprojection seemed to work fine, I just noticed that the fruit flying around looked like less than 90FPS.
I don’t see what else could have caused it. The demo machine was a GTX 1080 from what I understand, this should easily be able to render a very simple game like Fruit Ninja at 2x1440p @ 90 hz.
I’m not sure what they’re doing. In hindsight I should have thought of some questions beforehand.
I didn’t notice any blurriness from the upscaling, just the lenses around the periphery.
So we only have 3 reviews that were made in SF.
No one more?
I was particularly pleased with what I read in these 3 reviews, but really it is necessary to test the new prototype with real games and no longer with this fruit ninja.
This ED forum user, who already owns a Pimax 4K BE, was in San Francisco yesterday and posted his impressions:
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/375203-PiMAX-8K-VR?p=5996437&viewfull=1#post5996437
Well I got to try the 8k unit last night in San Francisco and I left the demo feeling very impressed and not concerned at all about my investment in the kickstarter. This truly feels like a next-gen headset. I have to say the 200 degree’s FOV is absolutely a game changer. It’s really on a whole different level to anything I’ve used (Oculus/PSVR and
even the Pimax BE) the sense of presence you feel with those extra degree’s is amazing. I got to play Fruit Ninja and also Big Screen desktop. The clarity of the display was sharper than my samurai sword I was
wielding in Fruit Ninja, and fluid as anything. I could not perceive SDE or god rays when using it. The Brightness of the 8k unit was really good (for me) I think the 5k one was slightly darker, but had a ‘blacker’ black - which is probably due to it using an OLED panel in the 5k - this might be better for Elite, given that it’s a very ‘black’ game - but I think that will come down to personal preference. I am already used to having a high resolution headset anyway (when
compared to Rift/Vive) but take that, and add those extra degree’s FOV and you get an idea of what it’s like. In fact, someone likened it going from 4:3 to Widescreen Televisions - it’s that dramatic.Everyone else there was similarly impressed with the unit. The only real concerns shown were with the hand controllers, which obviously won’t be
an issue at all for Elite. (The design of the controllers is not yet finalized from what I gather and subject to change)
