Did anyone get a chance to try the 8k in SF?

I am perplexed by the fact that reviewers report 5K using OLED while several answers from Pimax on Kickstarter have stated that the only difference between 5K and 8K is resolution, which should mean that both 8K and 5K will be using LCD-s. So which way is it?

Q: Please -
Is the Pimax 5K backers will recieve OLED or CLPL?
A: CLPL display.

So I’d say that their 5K OLED demo means shit (i.e nothing) for Kickstarter users. If their demos are meant as advertisments for Kickstarter, it’s false advertisment.

They have said that you will get a survey after the kickstarter has ended to ask if you want oled or clpl in the 5k.

Badass review, it seems like Pimax Team is getting better (software) with 8K. Thanks.

What makes you say that ? Even a simple game like fruit ninja stuttered and it seems they’ve got the distortion wrong around the edges. Also I wonder if their IPD adjustment (the software part) even works fine.

Breath man @Sjef, It is a long way to go … LOL

I was just wondering what made you so positive about the software because I don’t see it. That’s all.

It seems like I am not the only one.

But that is a panel thing

At the least, the 5K prototype lets them run a second demo station, in this case to try out the custom fit Leap Motion module.

I’m pretty sure that he was referring to the fact that the stretched view did not show up as a problem for that reviewer. The stretched view was the biggest negative and if that truly has been resolved then it is a very big deal. I assume that it was a software fix so far because the mechanical IPD adjustment isn’t available yet. I thought that the posted impressions were extremely positive and not sure how anyone could read it and think otherwise.

Well, like said:

  1. Fruit Ninja stuttered. This is an extremely simple game, if this stutters on an 1080 GTX then that doesn’t sound good at all especially given Pimax’s history of horrible drivers and very long time to implement fixes (over a year)
  2. warping around the edges, means they haven’t gotten the distortion right. They said they’re going tot try to fix it with different lenses but who knows how well this will work
  3. Brightness reported as being too low by some and screen colours as being dull.
  4. Controllers are very bad, they said they will improve them, who knows how succesful this will be

And then the stretching. Pimax said this was an IPD issue. It now seems that was true. However that doesn’t mean that it’s solved yet. We yet have to see how people with different IPD’s report. Different IPD on such big screen most likely translates to the need for different distortion settings and we don’t know yet how well that works.

The thing that IS positive is that everybody reported that ghosting is non existent on the 8k.

why you so negative ? are you working competition or what ? seroiusly I have enough your atitiude in this thread , you see only exaggerated cons

You’re free to go. This is an open forum, if you want to debate any of the points I just made you’re also free to do that. I’ve been a Pimax 4k user from the start and I’ve seen everything that happened. I can’t even count how many Pimax users sold their units after being angry and desperate with Pimax support. I also see tons of newbies coming in with the ‘hallelujah attitude’, accounts registered since september or later who haven’t even seen a Pimax product in real life. That’s fine but keep in mind that others here have a history with Pimax.

Yata_PL, it does no good to argue with sjefdeklerk, he will always be right in his own mind. No matter what you say about his attitude he will justify it. Just choose to ignore.

Again, if you disagree with any of the points then you’re free to do that. Yet I haven’t seen any of you ‘hallelujah’ newbies make a point against it that made any sense.

I’m sure a big part of you guys are going to be very disappointed and sell the product in anger once you’ll get it. Angry when Pimax releases another piplay version that doesn’t even start or is even worse than the last one. Just like happened with the 4k. I don’t see anything that makes me think it will be different this time. We’ll see.

I for one want to commend you for your attitude while I do feel it could be harsh at times I believe it’s exactly what pimax who is still just “company “selling a product (This time a expensive product) needs as much as pimax listens to their customers keep in mind they are a company and all companies would do the lease if they are allowed to that’s just business if customers let them slide you’ll get nowhere and VR will move slower. We are the reason they are launching the 8KX in the first place

This is our money and we want good product as well but still I dont see a point taking only cons from ppl reviews, we dont need your subjective summary. Everyone has his own mind and can draw conclusions. Do not treat adults like children in the fog…

Look dear Yata from Poland (I assume). People asked my what I found negative. I just replied that’s all. If you don’t like my replies because you want the ‘only happy show’ in your mind, then don’t read them or go read something else like reddit.

  1. I agree that it is not good to have stuttering on a game as simple as fruit ninja. I would love to see demos using a proper desktop gaming pc instead of a laptop though. I’ve had no experience with Pimax’s software development speed in the past so I can’t dispute what you say about that, but it would stand to reason that they have learned a lot in developing for the 4K unit, so I would hope that those lessons would translate into improved results for the new 8k unit. Hard to predict on that one.
  2. The warping at the lens edge described here is nowhere near the problem that was the bigger killer for me, which was the stretched image. From what the reviewer described this warping is at the far edges and only noticeable when you move your eyes to the far edge of your peripheral vision, which is not something that I ever do in VR. I were progressive lens glasses so have grown accustomed to turning my head to look at things instead of just moving my eyes. I don’t have to wear glasses with my Vive but I still find that I turn my head and not move my eyes. For me that means that lens distortion that would be at the edge of my peripheral vision would be a non-issue. I do hope it is corrected with the new prototype, but definitely not a deal breaker.
  3. Brightness was reported as being perfectly fine by this reviewer and a little dim by others. The reviewer has both a Rift and Vive which I also have. My Vive is brighter than my Rift, but the Rift’s brightness is perfectly fine for me. The Pimax 8k is said to have a brightness level similar to the Rift. This will be a non-issue for me.
  4. I don’t care about the pimax controllers because I will be using my Vive wands.
  5. As noted earlier my big concern was the stretching. It was very encouraging to read a detailed review from an experienced VR user who did not experience any stretching. It is true that we don’t know how well the final IPD custom settings will work for each person, but we do now know it is possible to get a non-stretched image which is a big deal.

I know you are very active here and was just a little surprised that you didn’t seem to pick up on the overall incredibly positive nature of these impressions.

Again, there’s a clear difference here between the newcomers and the people who know the drill of Pimax. You’ll see, we’ll talk again when you have the 8k and Pimax promises a new piplay version in 2 weeks to fix one major issue and then when they release it, it doesn’t even start. And once they release a fix and it starts, then it’s actually worse than the last version. That’s Pimax business as usual. We’ll talk again.
