Device Detected as Illegal, please contact after sales support message when starting new pitool 262?

True - and while I don’t see how checking serial numbers for legality should be a driver feature, I don’t see how it should be a PiTool feature either. So it will remain a mystery where the feature is placed until PiTool source will be released, and it will probably be a mysterey forever why it was added in the first place.

One more unbelievable move, so now if we have a working headset it might get ruined by this SN check?
Have ONCE MORE to disconnect, stop, reboot etc etc to play? https://community.openmr.ai/t/device-detected-as-illegal-on-pitool-262/29655/2 What if we have like 30 min free time? Ruined again? And if reboot doesnt fix, have to WAIT for support to fix this?
What about without internet THEN??

Ok then.
So I re-downloaded the fixed 262 and re-installed it.
Switched on headset, detected, no “illegal” messages.
That’s all very good.
I then ran a quick check on my 3 reference games (No Man’s Sky, Skyrim, Project Cars 2).
I left all the settings alone, to compare to 261.
No Man’s sky = solid 40fps, no judder, very happy, very good. 80fps in space, 40 fps on planet.
Skyrim = solid 40fps, no judder, very good. Even started getting 50-60fps a bit later.
Project cars 2 = steam version (so pp on) 31-40 fps, a bit juddery when <40, but mostly OK

To sum up: Thank You to whomever fixed the problem with the serial numbers.
And 262 is not worse than 261, it is better, I think.
My one slight oddity is only pcars2 seemed to have the GPU much above 90%, it was often much lower in the other games.
Perhaps that means I’ve got some overhead to ramp up the eye-candy…
Anyway, all fixed, thanks.

Edit:
Tried Pcars 2 in the non-steam vr version, ie with no paraproj, and was getting a pretty much rock solid 40fps. The Lowest I got was 34fps, and got up to 60fps for one delirious second.
So, even more happy and thank yous all round.

OK so has the serial number checks been removed in the new Pitool 262?

To put an online check like this in Pitool is another of those “amazingly bad decisions” that they keep doing that will continue to destroy their reputation. It never seems to end.

And they decide to do checks like this but are too incompetent to make sure all actual customer s/ns are included. Just hilarious again.

And why do the check anyways? What hardware would be trying to use PiTool other than Pimax headsets? Just coming up with another way to piss off customers and have them have to contact support it seems.

Also, it makes you wonder what other information that they are sending to their servers. Just read the Privacy Policy in PiTool, and it is a bit scary.

I can nearly guarantee they are using it for diagnostic data. Internal BOM certainly has changed to some degree even on the same HMD across #SNs, and that has fairly not been publicly shared.

Considering you have no choice in sending your data through pitool, I’m happy to see it at least done properly. This will be way more useful than expecting us to post our full #SN and computer specs every time we have an issue.

So, even after registered my SN same issue was on, but Pimax logged in via TW, and fixed my config.json file, so now it’s all butter. .262 much faster in Pavlov VR (stable 144fps 200X,2080ti), no shuttering, the best ver so far.

Just one question before upgrade from .253:
Is Pitools 262 still doesn´t have the 64hz button box like the lastest builds?

There’s a post somewhere that states if you’re having issues to delete your local profile folders and that seems to do the trick. Looking at the gains in performance it seems on paper to be worth it

Edit:

Found it:

c:\ProgramData\pimax
c:\Users\ username \AppData\Roaming\PiTool
c:\Users\ username \AppData\LocalLow\Pimax
c:\Users\ username \AppData\Local\Pimax
c:\Users\ username \AppData\Local\PiTool\

u no need delete it EVERY time when u install new version. But if u have troubles - it can help.
(253 and 262 versions have low fps if u using 258-261 before. So u need delete files)

@Bimdan
Probably a safe bet to delete when a new PiTool is released.

I have not updated to the latest 262 version yet but the prior one, after a clean install worked well and something I noticed with it was in Il2 and DCS, spotting and following distant aircraft was easier than before on my 8K.

At PiTool 1.5 Render and SteamVR 100% (DCS Render 1) DCS was smooth over Krasnodar and at decent frame rates for the first time I have flown that quick mission. That and the being able to see the Mig ahead, the Helo’s to the side and the I76’s around the place was a nice treat.

Now to see what the fixed version of 262 brings.

Hello,

Could you please follow the steps stated in the link?
https://community.openmr.ai/t/device-detected-as-illegal-on-pitool-262/29655

If it doesn’t resolve the problem, we suggest you to revert back to 261, as we are resolving some bugs in 262.

Sincerely,
Quorra.Pima

I’ve updated expecting issues but everything is running fine here!

yeah obviously thats never going to happen if they are now adding security / serial number checks to their code

serial no = identification =log usage records etc
I don’t trust google/microsoft and certainly don’t trust pimax
All very Orwellion
I’ve blocked piserver and pitools from firewall access
