CES 2023 (Jan 5-8)

On paper, the Crystal for 2023 actually does everything right. As a PCVR anyway. Let’s hope that pimax will get the other stuff up and running in a timely manner.

…waiting for the 12k LH light …

Yes I would wave Pimaxes flag in 2023. I’m still an Index user and think - once Crystal has all the issues sorted it will be THE best all round headset bar non.

But Pimax need to restructure their personal. A real leader needs to be established and the deadwood need to be cut lose.

Any videos not from the pube guy?

How is Josh only seeing the 42s here for what seems like the first time?

Are these newly engineered 42 lenses with the correct spacing? @hammerhead_gal @PimaxQuorra

It is indeed quite difficult to recommend a „best“ VR headset. I‘m currently using the Reverb G2 as my go-to headset, but that only works well b/c I‘m focusing on sims (flight & racing). If my mood should swing to want to play games relying on VR controllers, it‘s no longer that attractive. The 8KX is far too tricky to be a recommendation I would make to almost anybody unless they are very keen on extra FoV and willing to cope with all the hassle.

The Quest 2 is a great allrounder but then again for a PC VR gamer who is willing to spend a bit more and doesn‘t care about the stand-alone benefits, its a tough sell due to the lack of long term comfort.

It would really be nice if a good allround solution would hit the market. On paper it could be the Crystal, if it get’s all of its missing pieces done in good quality (big if!). But here the price tag takes it out of reach of most of the users who‘d ask me for a recomomendation. First time VR buyers rarely will dish out 2,5 grand to get a lighthouse-supported Crystal setup, and more experienced users probably wouldn’t ask me for advice but would consider the options based on their own preferences…

Jesus H Brad couldn’t leave alone the exchangeable lenses?
The guy is a clown.

Based on @SweViver showing them to Joshua, I’d say they’ll be a hit

Hehe I’m pretty sure that part was scripted.

@Djonko Well, indeed it seems like he didn’t notice, but that’s a good thing though and tells us a lot. Seems he didn’t notice a fall off in either FOV or sharpness. “Oh! These are the 42s?

He didn’t notice a drop off of 20° of field of view? Those lenses must be ludicrously sharp across the entire lens.

That’s telling because those 42 ppd lenses do indeed have a fall off in terms of the field of view per their specs.

Josh, not noticing the change is the telling and juicy part, not the scripted response he said to Martin once he is aware he is wearing them.

what is good about the 42 lenses will be the lessened fall off in terms of resolution along the outer edge of the lenses.

Directly in the center will be sharper than the standard lenses, 12 pixels per degree shy of retina at 42 ppd, but along the edge will be less soft than the default lenses.

The fact that he didn’t know he was wearing them tells me they were working well because he’s not complaining about the loss in field of view that Pimax warns you about when using 42 PPD.

No lens is sharp outside of the center,
In fact, the image gets incredibly soft beyond the center. That will be true of both sets of lenses in the box

Josh jokingly saying ‘oh yeah, it’s way better,” is marketing speak, but not him not even noticing they were in which is even better.

As long as we have had VR HMD’s people have pushed their eyes closer to the lenses with trimmed face foam, and other things to try and increase the FOV on fixed lens hmds.

If Josh put these things on and his unscripted reaction prior to talking to Martin seems to be that he didn’t notice a difference, it means it’s a subtle but good difference.

That he didn’t notice the FOV drop is what is really cool.

love him or hate him i’m still glad Brad offers his opinions on vr and this latest bit on Crystal is a relief, sounds like the controllers are getting there which was for me a worry. i nearly cancelled my reservation yesterday when i heard delivery won’t be until atleast march…reading Brads comment on the controllers, glad i never cancelled now. Good things come to those who wait

I am impressed about headsets able to map your own hand(arms) for interacting in VR.
I wonder if PIMAX can do that to any degree of accuracy or not?

Apparently I’m not paying close enough attention of that is the case.

You won some big points here. Well done :sunglasses:
