Wouldn’t it be contradictory to state first they are only building 400x 8K-X and give additionally everybody which pledge for a 8K the possiblity to upgrade it to a 8K-X, too? I don’t think they give this possiblity. Otherwise it would be great to have a Link to the Source of your Statement
Im not stating 8k backers might have the option to upgrade to the X model. That would make no sence
What I suggested was that the 8K X backers might have the option of keeping the first “8K” sent to them and then paying the difference to recieve an 8K X later in may
Let me get confirmation on that
Pay the difference? They are separate products. The only way you could keep both is if you pledge for both.
As much as that would be awesome, there is no way they would offer that.
Understood but they were also talking about 8k X backers being able to just keep their 8k if they change their mind about the X so they must have been willing to refund the difference. If they have the ability to refund Im sure it would be possible to upgrade some how
By the way you can order 2x headsets with 1 pledge by simply adding the cost of another 8K to your pledge BUT obviously you would have to pay that extra now not in 6 months
Give us some time to get confirmation. It would be a great option for the X backers
It’s unclear whether the Standard 8K pledgers would receive their 8K X’s within a given time-frame, it could be late 2018 for ALL.
We just don’t know.
the 8k X has not been developed yet, there is no existing X to demo. the comparisons were done with a simulation as i understand it.
I have been following 8K vs 8K-X topic for the last few days and it seems to me that people are not aware of different challenges which come with 8K-X.
- Output resolution vs. rendered resolution.
The rendered resolution is bigger than the output resolution due to the pixel aliasing of the pre lens warp (as explained here or in a link given in my post here). We do not know yet which supersampling factor (SS) 8K-X (or 8K) use but their FOV, which is bigger than the one used by Vive and Oculus, may suggest that it may also require bigger SS factor.
@Neokolzia So it is not fair to run the benchmark with Vive with SS set and compare it to Pimax without SS.
While Vive has input resolution 21601200 the rendering happens to 30241680 which gives almost 2x SS. If we factor similar SS for Pimax as well, we are basically looking at 2x 4K pixel amount. It is clear that even GTX 1080 Ti cannot handle this @ 90 FPS
- The fastest speed Display port supports is lower than what is needed for 2x4K resolution @ 90 FPS. So even if the gfx card would be able to render it in lower resolution and then upsample to 2x4K there is no way to get it into the HMD via one DP.
So 2x DP ports are needed. Now considering another peculiarity of the Pimax HMD - brainwarp the two DPs (assuming each serving one panel in the HMD) would need to run at 90 FPS each, but in kind of leapfrogging pattern. This may be another challenge getting out from one gfx card, because it would mean that internal timing would have to work on 4K resolution @ 180 FPS (rendering resolution even magnified by SS).
My understanding is that 8K-X is not yet fully designed (or fully tested to prove the design) and Pimax is hoping to resolve it later, now focusing on 8K (without -X), which is actually smart solution to all the problems described above while still being able to benefit from 8K displays in the HMD.
I also believe that putting additional upscaler into 8K-X is not really the issue which holds 8K-X back at the moment. Besides, there is already 8K-X with an upscaler - it is called 8K. I hope that Pimax will achieve some universal design eventually, probably with two DPs and the upscaler, to serve both parties, but this might be in the next version. It is difficult to blame them for trying to get out 8K first as it seem to be much more simple than one-size-fits-all solution.
See the official response I got from Pimax regarding options for exchange of the loan 8K for 8K X
Option 1:
Wait until May to receive your 8K X
Option 2:
Receive an 8K loan unit in Jan/Feb and when the 8k X is released send the 8K loan unit back to Pimax who will send you the 8k X
Option 3:
X backers have the option to keep the 8K loan unit. If they like it they can choose to keep it and Pimax will offer them a $200 coupon for other Pimax products… Retail 8k. 8K X… Controllers etc
We will ship any other RETAIL product orders whether its 8K or 8K X after we fulfilled all the Kickstarter packages for our backers.
The retail price of 8K or X is not decided, but it will be higher than the Kickstarter price.
Option 4:
X backers can choose to add $499 + shipping cost to their pledge on Kickstarter (NOW) and we will ship the 8K (Jan/Feb) and the 8K X(May) or as soon as possible based on their backer #"
Here are my thoughts on available options:
Pros for exchanging the loan 8K for 8K X
Save on shipping costs from China
Priority delivery of 8K X based on kickstarter number
Cons for exchanging the loan 8K for 8K X
*Return shipping costs
*Exchange time could take up to a month or more to process with no HMD
Pros for keeping the loan 8K
*No return shipping cost
*No wait time for the exchange process
*$200 cupon to buy the 8K X or other products when available
*Keep your 8K to compare with the 8K X when it arrives. Then keep/sell the HMD you prefer
Cons for keeping the loan 8K
*$200 difference you pay now will be retained as a coupon
*Possible higher price of 8K X retail edition
*Longer wait for 8K X Retail version, Pimax claims it will be available after all Kickstarter rewards have been shipped
Option 1 is a 350+ rip. That would be a pass for me.
Option 2 is doubling down when the 8K has not even been received yet.
Hmm.
So Option 2 is basically ordering an 8K as an extra, essentially ordering 2 headsets instead of 1?
Yes. Advantage being you own both headsets and have the option to sell the 8K when you finally get the X in May. No waiting for the exchange
Trouble is, you’d need to pay extra now. I’d rather have this decision once I tried the 8K myself and have more confidence in what they can deliver.
Or Option 3 - Wait it out and when the 8K-X is ready to be shipped, they ship it. (Which is what I am taking)
I don’t want to deal with having to return the 8K version (shipping / import tax etc). I figure if come May, they were unable to produce the 8K-X that would entitle us to at least the standard 8K version + some cash back or coupon and perhaps something as bonus (wishful thinking).
I dont want to spend another $500 just so I can have both. Even if you believe you could sell it afterwards, still annoying. Plus IF for some reason it turns to be a flop, you would have just screwed yourself out of another $500… No thanks. Not to mention, delivery times on kickstarter need to be taken with a grain of salt, there is no guarantee the 8K version will be even fully shipped out Jan/Feb. It could easily be pushed back, you never really know.
I am backing the X because I want the cutting edge tech, pure and simple.
Next week at the demos, please ask about the 8K-X if you are going!
