Would be Great if you could test this
Well like said, it IS possible for sure. In fact it doesnāt even have to be software scaling, since each GPU comes with hardware scalers, which are way more efficient. So I wonder why Pimax is just not using that ?
Use the GPU to scale the render output up to 4k instead of having the HMD do that ? @PimaxSWD @bacon It would cause a bit more strain on the GPU but compaired to rendering 4k it should be way faster.
Sure, if you donāt touch the Configuration of SteamVR or anything else, your GPU will send 2x4K native Pictures which are perfectly fine for 2D Applications or Simple 3D Tasks. What i want to figure out is if there is an āalreadyā existing Software Side functionality to Render in 1440p and Upscale it to 2x4k.
Why? Because i have my doubts that Volta will be able to render 2x 4K x 90FPS in Full Details on Every Game. And with 2x Volta i am unsure if we have immediatly problems with Micro-Stuttering or other Dual GPU Problems. Also not every Game supports SLI perfectly well ā¦ or did something changed in the last 2 years?
Has Pimax indicated if an option to downscale with 8K X is on/off the table?
Plenty of content can still look good without full blown 2*4K.
Choices are always good.
Volta Ti will not save all content from el slideshow perf. nor might it be available till late 2018.
Hmm if i understand you right, you are asking if there will be an HW-Upscaler in the 8K X? No there will be none, they already updated their FAQ. Thats why i started the discussion in the first place.
If the unit comes with 2x DP 1.4 (which they said it will), then I really donāt see much against just using the GPU to scale. I think we should be fine, but hopefully Pimax will respond. Or what do you guys think @LoneTech @Headcool
Has anyone brought up the fact that Pimax expects the Standard 8K back before the 8K X will be delivered?
Would rather hang on to mine until the 8K X has made it into my residence and that itās in working condition.
They didnt really stated if you need to send it before or after X delivery, but confirmed that you will have to send it back anyway.
The campaign end survey will tell us more, hopefully.
Still the question remains, as you even stated yourself, why didnāt pimax use this method for the non-X Version if this would be so trivial? My only guess is that they want to prevent to mess with Drivers/Software/Games etc.
Well we will see. My biggest Nightmare would be to get the 8K first, being able to play etc. having fun, all perfect, and then be forced to exchange it with a 8K X where i have to buy SLI Volta and still not being able to play the same games in the same Quality Settings as before ā¦
Pimax states that SLI GPUās will benefit the 8K X but how are we to utilize this option when VR Multi GPU does not even work?
Surely Pimax does not intend to create their own driver that would support Multi GPU?
Need more clarification but since the 8K X has never been shown, it may go unanswered.
It might look petty terribleā¦subsampling on the Vive looks pretty bad.
at the end of the KS they will send a survey. in that you can choose to keep the 8k instead of exchanging for the X.
With the difference being credited to our accounts or might it be some coupons?
Who knowsā¦
The issue was the chips that Pimax was using to drive the displays didnāt have enough bandwidth to push 4k @90hz per screen so they had to reduce the input resolution and rely on upscaling afterwards.
Itād work on any game that supersampling thorugh steamVR works currently - which is most of them. You normally use this GitHub - matzman666/OpenVR-AdvancedSettings: OpenVR Advanced Settings Dashboard Overlay to adjust it
I have seen on the kickstarter they mention that you would have to send the 8K unit back first prior to them shipping you the 8K-X model. Which is a pain for the consumer, but imagine they ship you the 8K-X and you āforgetā to send back the 8Kā¦
This is the reason why I am (probably one of the few) that will request them to NOT ship the 8K version and I will gamble / risk it all for the 8K-X version. I donāt want to deal with paying for shipping (even if this is free), most important, the custom taxes etc. Also on the kickstarter they mentioned that if you wait it out till the 8K-X is ready, they will throw āsomethingā in for free. No idea if the person was making a joke, or sincere. Nonetheless, I am curious, anyone else going to opt to WAIT and not get the 8K early?
I droped down to the standard 8K for this reason BUT I think they offered for people to keep their 8K and pay extra for the 8kX when its ready. In this case you could easily sell your 8K in May for what you paid for it. No return shipping cost and no wait for the exchange
When you say, āpay extraā I am guessing you mean basically to pledge for 8K and the 8K-X version, right? I canāt imagine them to let us keep the 8K and then pay a few hundred or something and then get the 8K-X. I could be wrong, but sounds unlikely. Do you happen to have any link to where they said something along those lines?
I am on the fence myself, but I really want to believe in the 8K-X version. I find it unfortunate that they pretty much have left 8K-X out of the lime light completely from the beginning. From downplaying its worth by saying there is no āgaming differenceā between the standard / X version, to constantly mentioning the graphical requirements for it etc.
The problem is, since there are no more X version to pledge, they really have no reason to lure more to pledge (cause you canātā¦) you have to wonder how much are they will to cater to the 400 or so X backersā¦ Considering that over 4x are pledging for the 8K versionā¦
I just REALLY hope that they will give us an update on the 8K-X version, even a demo before the kickstarter ends. It would be GREATLY appreciated. @PiMAX
I think youāre dreaming LOL
