Backer #441: Initial 8K-X impressions (Milopapa)

I‘m not an anime guy, but with my many tests I figured that the madvr plugin (has nothing to do with vr) is mandatory for anime, as you can use settings to improve the linework drastically (options inside mad vr) especially when additional upscaling needs to done as anime are usually not 4k rather 720p.

OK understood. Yes, please try the original GitS at 720p and tell me how it looks using MPC-HC+MadVR

Hi noro…yes, I am very familiar with the MPC-HC + MadVR combo. Been using it for years and it’s a killer plugin! I was using MPC-HC stand alone coupled with ffdshow video codec for a long time but when I discovered MadVR it was a game changer. The options it gives you to sharpen the picture yields very impressive results.

Here’s the thing though… using either VorpX or Virtual Desktop + MPC+HC doesn’t allow you to watch movies in a theater/cinema environment. BigScreen has tons of cool theater environments to choose from that actually puts you in the theater room, making you feel like you’re, well, at the movies! Not to mention it has options to watch films with other people online. That is a killer feature!

Which brings me to my question…Is there a way to use MPC-HC with the Bigscreen app?

Furthermore, Bigscreen just introduced their own video player. How well does that player stack up against HPC-HC?

@jojon got a reference/number for that?

Which product are you referring to exactly ? PowerDVD ?

And, bonus question: is there a good way to view 3D movies yet ? It makes me mad that I actually have 3D blurays at home which I cannot watch in my VR headsets, although I paid for them as a regular customer. But I don’t want to spend half a day to configure 6 programs and align them before I can hope to somehow watch the movies… so if it is a super-complicated solution spare your energy to type it down for me…

That’s not anime that’s hentai

first, there is a movie theatre/living room enviroment screen in vorpx.
I personally find those distracting though in any solution and prefer a simple soothing background that is usually offered with any tool. Think of it as an outdoor cinema right under the sky without any giggling nerve wrecking people around you. In any case, I’d prefer better quality than those features.

I also find that bigscreen looks way worse than VD and vorpx. It’s gotten improved a bit but it is still drastically infereor.

Not sure but I recall @mirage335 did a deep dive test and came to similar conclusions. btw. he came up with some other alternatives that may even be more promsing than VD, but I don’t recall if it was because of picture quality or overall functionality.
(think he did not include vorpx, maybe wrong though, it’s been a while, remember it to be a great read, maybe his best contribution on the forum)

You should be able to run mpc on bigscreen without any issues, it’s just…bigscreen quality…nah
Bigscreen may have advantages for socializing features but thats it. The player sucks imho

yes, powerdvd. I tried with untouched (iso and actual disc) as well and it worked. (but only in classic mode, not in cinema mode!)
for some strange reasons its a bit picky with zoom features on me 21:9 as those properties seem to be drm-ed.
It’s a common issue to have blackbars on widescreen footage on a widescreen display (above and under). ironically even, somehow. Same with Netflix, Youtube ect. I have widescreen plugins installed that solve that issue as a workaround.

still, powerdvd is a good piece of software with its inbuild upscalers (not as good as madvr but way less hustle) and I like the audio routing as it allows to send the audiosignal seperately uncompressed to eg. a dolby suround amplifier. It also works great for 3d (not VR) movies.
I recommend to borrow a copy and test it as it is not cheap.

there’s only two kind of Anime,

hentai and soft-core hentai.

Funny I actually would love a theatre vr app that had a crowd that could react to the movie.

For maximum immersion, some of the crowd should be talking, texting, or walking in front of your seat. As a bonus, the scent module could waft the smell of stale popcorn toward your nose.

yrah and use a buttkicker to simulate schitty kids kicking your chair.

Lets not forget spill some sticky juice on the floor.in front of your chair.

Im starting unity tutorials , I seriously want to create this App.

I will call it Theatre Simulator.

Relive the experience of going to a movie, buying concessions, waiting in line to go in the whole experience.

Yes, and throw in some annoying icecream people, that nerve wreckingly prolong the wait for the actually movie, because they could not get it earlier with the popcorn for reasons beyond my control.
Could be a nice touch legally throwing stuff at them at least in VR finally. Or as drowhunter suggested rough up some of those kicking kids for good.
Or super creative ways to mute pitchy laughers…, preferably as gore-like as possible.
I am too dark? Sorry Other than that…well I’d pass on a simulation
Having people react on the movies would give it an 70ies 80ies sitcom offsite-randomfeellike-laugher,
god I hate that in old sitcoms that were actually good.

And don’t forget to play 20 minutes of ads, before the movie actually starts!

I would buy this, get on it

Also you can’t change movies while playing, it’ll use proximity sensors to ensure that you’re spending the entire movie length in the headset.

Oh and people who walk in 10 minutes late and open the door letting light in from outside and distracting everybody.

And that one person who brings their crying baby to a movie.

This is sounding really immersive

Damnit… Then it won’t work at all in Pimax headsets…
