Yup, same for me, oculus mode was really bad.
I also get awful artifacts and graphical anomaleies in oculus mode.
I finally accepted to try Small fov and I get a steady 64 fps at 70% SS in Steam VR an 1.0 in PiTool. Far objects and cars are blurry but not more than at higher SS. I canāt stand Smart Smoothing so I needed to find a native Hz that works. To get similar performance at Normal fov, I needed to set SS at 50%. That āblurriesā the image noticeably. The good thing is that when you find a setting that gives you a steady fps, thereās no stuttering at all.
Itās quite a setback though compared to iRacing that allows a steady 72fps, Large fov, 90 to 100% SS and most settings at High with AI carsā¦
Yes I would say iRacing is the king of VR, its just so clear compared to the rest. I wonder if there is any chance Reiza will release a patch to natively support the lenses to eliminate the need for PP.
Yes, Rfactor 2 devs removed the need for PP a few months ago and that made a big difference.
Im just hoping its something that can be addressed and not a flaw with madness engine.
I had PP enabled and was testing AMS2 and American Truck simulator the other day and they were both very clear compared to what I am used to with PP enabled which suprised me. I went back and test those titles again today and it is back to being extremely blurry where you cant read signs in the near distance. Not sure what I did initially to get it to work better where everything was clear.
Iām quite happy with the look of the game since I implemented the sharpening tweak as described here:
https://community.openmr.ai/t/project-cars-2-pimax-5k-8k-setup-guide/14818
Also, I found a configuration that allows me to race at 64Hz with Normal fov with good image quality on my old i7 4770K and RTX 2080:
Pitool SS = 0.75
SteamVR SS = 80% (75% in more demanding senarios like rain)
For some reason, this combination delivers much better performance than setting Pitool at 1 and SteamVR at 60% which should be the equivalent. I think itās because Pitoolās SS adjustment uses different horizontal vs vertical pixel ratio. Pitool at 0.5 looks bad.
man im so close to pulling the trigger on this game, itās not even funny.
I bought it yesterday⦠and i almost have 10h gameplay already. Which tells me, this is sooo much fun to drive.
Im a Simracer veteran since day one, i played them ALL. Even the Simulators where cars looked like some straight lines with dots as wheelsā¦
Just to name the lates ones,(on PC) Assetto Corsa 742h gameplay and Project Cars2 246h. But it is probably the double amount of hours, since i played them on PS4 and on PC again. Plus lot“s of time on Motion Simulators.
Now to get to the point, Automobilista 2 feels amazing! I was very skeptical to buy it, because its the same Madness engine and Project Cars 2/Slightly Mad Studios didn“t deliver, when it comes to Carphysics, FFB and Bugs. Basicly they left us hanging with a broken game imo.
But here comes the Gamechanger, Automobilista 2 fixes it all, ForceFeedback is great! Carphysics are great! AI is very good. Over all it feels so much more authentic to drive.
I can feel that Reiza put much love and work in this title. If i look at the Patch history over the last 2 Months, they brought out huge improvement patches every WEEK!
Yes it is an early access title, and there are some things they need to improve but even at this status, Automobilista 2 feels so much better then Project Cars 2 and Assetto Corsa.
It has the potential to become the best Racingsimulator out there, if Reiza keep on working so well.
When it comes to VR, i must say it is very GPU demanding, just a little less then Project Cars 2 but not much less!
Yes in the reviews some people say it runs awesome in VR and i was glad to hear that, but they didnt tell on what HMD they are running it!
I remember Project Cars 2 on my Oculus Rift CV1, was running ultra smooth even on an old 1070.
So if they are playing it on a Rift or Vive, of course PC2 and Automobilista 2 is running great!
But we are talking about Pimax HMD“s with high resolution and wide FOV.
PP has to be turned on unfortunatly which even needs more GPU.
What i“m trying to say is, if you hope that VR got better in Automobilista 2 on a Pimax⦠No not realy. Even my 2080ti is pushed to it“s limits on a 5k+.
But hey thats what we wanted right?! Big resolution and wide FOV HMD“s.
3080ti is right around the corner, and will change that problem hopfullyā¦
The graphics in Automobilista 2 is not as āpolishedā like in Project Cars 2.
But who cares! It“s still looking very good and to me it“s about the feeling when you sit in the car and how it handles. This is where Automobilista 2 is playing it“s Aces!
Overall, i can highly recommand Automobilista 2, i dont regret the purchase at all! Automobilista 2 is my new Simracing love <3
If you whant to get it, get it now since it“s still 20% off while in Early Acces. After full release, they will charge full price.
If Assetto Corsa and Project Cars 2 could have a baby, it would be Automobilista 2.
I hope this will help my Pimax HMD familly.
Cheers
EDIT: I“ve made a benchmark between PC2 and AM2 just to see if there is a VR Performance boost in AM2 over PC2 like some people say.
I took the same Track, closest matching cars i could find, 5 laps of race in rain with 14 AI opponents, same Race Time, same graphic settings, same pitool settings, same Nvidia settings. I used fpsVR to get the average FPS after the Race.
The performance between VR AM2 and PC2 is the same! ~1FPS differenceā¦
Have you tried without PP ? (oculus mod)
https://community.openmr.ai/t/how-to-play-project-cars-on-pimax-8k-5k-without-parallel-projections-and-steamvr/18634/19?u=dadrop
Steam APP ID for AMS : 1066890
I“ve tried it on Project Cars 2, but i didnt like it.
I have no problem running both games smooth with PP, since i“ve tinkered out setups.
Thanks mate
Nice write-up!
Since you seem to have ALOT of experience with these games., maybe you can answer a question thatās been bugging me.
-
You say that AM2 isnāt as polished. Do you mean in the same vein as AC isnāt as high tech (simpler graphics compared to PC)
-
People still seem in general to prefer AC over ACC. Is this true? Or am I just imagining this? (I mean the fact that Kunos is still releasing regular updates to AC is kind of strange considering the sequel is out. How many new tracks and cars has PC gotten since PC2)
-
PC@ and AM@ perfomance is about the same, but does it run faster than ACC?
This sounds like it might be the maxRecommendedResolution issue in SteamVR.
https://community.openmr.ai/t/solved-maxrecommendedresolution-issue-problem-with-pimax-8k-on-iracing/27411/2?u=neal_white_iii
What i mean with isnĀ“t as āpolishedāā¦
āGraphicsā is a very extensive term and I thought about that a few days to realy find out what exactly makes the difference.
Well i chose the word āpolishedā because both (PC2 and AM2) graphics look very good, and itĀ“s just little things⦠ItĀ“s about the textures AM2 is using, espacially for cars.
If you take the same car out of those games, they almost look like they are modeled the same (same amount of polygons). So the shape of the car is the same, but PC2 did put more detailed textures on the car, which makes it look more real, more living, more āpolishedā.
Exept the plain textures on cars, AM2 still looks way better than AC. The weather system is beautiful, if you drive a race in thunder storms turning into very foggy into clear weather, is a blast!
And since AM2 is āearly accessā there are windshield wipers missing atm. This is also why i called it not as polished. IĀ“m sure they will add them later on. But who knows, maybe they add better textures for cars as well, but here im not sure.
I dont know, i think it“s a matter of taste.
I think the main reason is because ACC is limited it self by focusing on GT-seriesā¦
The lack of variety makes me also prefer AC over ACC.
Yes both PC2 and AM2 run better on VR
I guess this is what you meant.
ACC is not very well optimized for VR.
I did play AM2 a good amount of hours now, since i posted the write-up. And i still say that the physics of the cars are one of the best i“ve ever drove.
You know how it is to get virtual āpulled outā of the car while driving, where you think ācome on this is not real/trueā
I dont have that in AM2, i can easy drive 4-5 hours without getting āpulled outā virtualy and then take of my Headset with a big smile in my face because of the fun i had.
Just to make things clear, there are some bugs in the physics justified by āearly accessā which of course will pull you out if they happen
But even at this state of things, like i“ve said earlier AM2 is my favorite Racingsim now.
Cheers
People should really nag them about adding proper support for Pimax. Thereās only a few mentions on their forums. Things up close looks really clear even on low SS but in the distance its very blurred out and it would be nice to have that extra performance for SS
I“ve just double checked, but i can“t spott blurr in the distance, except the SDE of the 5K+ which is obviously not on the game“s side.
In order to get clarity in the distance, you need to raise SS.
The lower your SS the more blurred the distance will be.
Also make sure your āmaxRecommendedResolutionā on SteamVR is set to 16384.
Check your Ingame Performance settings like MSAA filters, Texture settings etc and Nvidia settings.
Because of the superior resolution of a Pimax HMD, PC2 and AM2 are very GPU demanding even a 2080ti is forced to it“s knees.
You can not expect playing it on large FOV, high details, high SS, high MSAA.
You need to balance your Ingame-,Pimax-,SteamVR-,Nvidia- settings.
If you want more clarity, then lower your FOV and raise SS for example on low or mid MSAA should be fine.
I dont recommend FXAA or SMAA if you want clarity.
I even doubt that the next gen GPU (3080ti) will handle those games on large FOV and settings Maxed out, since they talk about ~30% performance increase to current GPU“s.
But thats a different story⦠we will seeā¦
Thanks for the write up but you missed the point of the post. I mentioned the clarity up close as its quite impressive even at low SS. Its quite āclearā what i mean I can see it can easily be missunderstood though. We really dont want to use PP in any game, i dont have the exact number but its a big performance loss.
The way you described it, made it not realy clear.
NOW you say you dont want PP in the game, ok yes without PP you will get some more FPS which you can add to SS, but still not enough to realy turn the page on large FOV and high settings, this is where i“m comming from.
There are workarounds on how you can disable PP for those games.
Well i have PP anabled, without any workarounds the game runs at around ~70 FPS in Race at rain with nice quality and smooth enough. And like i said have no blurred distance except SDE. I was also able to run PC2 with workarounds at ~120 FPS with different Pitool and settings with good quality. This is where i whanted to help you or thought you needed help
Yes i dont like PP too
Cheers
