Just played around with Assetto Corsa on the 8K. It uses OpenVR instead of SteamVR and resolution seems independent of PiTool and SteamVR.
I was quite surprised, the resolutions seemed to be set in game under Graphics Settings. Those settings were used on the Pimax 8K. I tried 1080p, 1440p and 4k with the VR adjusting with each resolution change.
Rather simple to understand and easy to deal with. This slider business with SteamVR is very confusing when trying to determine what is being sent to the HMD
Also gyro tracking was much more behaved in Assetto Corsa than for instance and compare - Il2 BoS. Set it in Corsa at beginning of track session and that’s it. Il2 it is a case of having to recenter on a regular basis in flight. I think this is a SteamVR issue.
Assetto Corsa on mid level systems runs very well.
Oh, Just wondering why HMD resolution and seems to be in game rather than SteamVR render settings.
That and that the sim runs very well but that might be due to its age and well optimised. less demanding graphics.
I prefer to have res settings that I can associate with and in Wide FOV it runs very smooth and with little image distortion on the periphery. I conclude, of the 2 titles I have tested so far that SteamVR is the culprit in giving me distortion with their weird SS Render settings.
I have tried to get Riose of Tomb Raider VR running but nothing shows on the headset and I haven’t any other VR titles to compare as it is mainly Il2 and Assetto Corsa I use.
AC seems to have written Open VR natively in to the game and doesn’t launch Steam VR (which is also Open VR). I run Il2 on my Rift from 1C’s launcher and it loads Steam VR (not Steam though) to grab Open VR.
As for how Pimax handles it I can’t say. Still waiting for my 5K+
With the flickering, I don’t see it but I wonder what settings your friends with the 8K might be using. I am running AF x8 and AA x4 under the graphics settings.
My tests have been driving with a keyboard for input which sucks as I am OS and don’t have my G25 with me. Assetto Corsa for me seems to run really well in general.
The native implementation of OpenVR might be why Assetto Corsa has less issues with distortion on the wider Pimax FOV. Relying on SteamVR’s OpenVR render settings seems to be a hindrance for Pimax headsets and their different panels and wider FOV.
I’m still waiting for my Pimax 8K, I told them to write in this thread, saying what configurations they have, is curious because there is more than one person with these flickering problems.
Hey i have a 8k and play Assetto Corsa i use this Settings with Content Manager
Its AA 8 Pitool 1.25 and Steam vr 70-75 % World Detail Medium or low ist enough for me . And Avg FPS 70 plus ist smooth for Playing . Its more crisp

I just bought Assetto Corsa (currently on sale on Steam). It plays great on my higher-end system, but I’ve only played it on my (flat) 4K monitor, so far. I wanted to learn the game interface a bit, before jumping into VR. I really like being able to see into the far distance and I’m not sure if my 8K will actually yield a better experience overall. I’ll test out VR soon and share my experience.
I tried the Project Cars 2 demo, but wasn’t impressed. I really prefer the courses I’ve tried in AC, particularly the Monza '66 track, which is great fun.
My initial testing was done in 2D. I haven’t actually been able to play AC in VR.
It only plays on my 2D monitor. I have SteamVR running and found some advice to add -vr to the command line parameters via Steam / Assetto Corsa / Properties, but that didn’t help. Project Cars 2 has a “Play in VR” button in Steam / Library, but I don’t see that for AC.
I was confused at first because in VR it only loaded the game - menus or gameplay - in a cinema type room, and in addition, performance was stuck at 9-10 FPS regardless of resolution or detail settings (i9-9900k + 2080Ti)
I couldn’t find any reports about this, and it doesn’t show as a VR title in Steam either. Turns out by right clicking the title in Steam and choosing Properties, SteamVR Theatre mode is enabled by default - I had no idea this existed and is the only game I’ve ever seen that defaults to this. Plus some warning about performance pops up on launch.
Now that it’s off, I found I could load the game via PiTool MyGames (I never normally do this, I just load via Steam for most apps) and access the game via monitor or headset. Performance is now acceptable too.
Thanks for the info. That describes my experience too, but my i7-8770K and 2080 (non-Ti) couldn’t even reach those framerates. I even discovered this fix on my own, like you did.
You’re right, that is annoying and quite confusing, especially after getting a “this game does not run in VR” popup. Thanks for that info; that’s probably what’s happening to me. I’ll test this tonight.
