About the Pimax 5K+ Black dots Replacement

At the time it struck me as being an excuse for the dot pattern to be part of the design.

Oculus Go has the same pattern as reported by others.

They were probably talking about dirt :stuck_out_tongue:

I’d really like to find an old 4k post. Someone posted a realy neat headset’s controller design in piano black. :beers::sunglasses::+1::sparkles:

Yes but they did not come back and say the dots help with the contrast, how the hell can dots help with that ?

Not for nothing, but I received my 5K+ today and I didn’t see the black dot pattern. Mind you, I only had the moon wallpaper and the SteamVR menu to look at, but I looked towards lighter colors and did not see a black dot pattern. I was really just checking for obvious problems before I attached the DAS, but I did take special care to try and see the black dot pattern.

I did not see it, though I had a stuck pixel that seems to have resolved itself. Perhaps they have indeed solved the issue with the 5K+ now. Backer 24XX US

2 theories just popped into my mind:

Theory 1:

We all know many screen equipping electronic devices come with a protective film. Sometime it is that thin and well applyed, without any air bubble, that you can use the device for months before realizing you forgot to remove that protective film.

Imagine the panels are delivered with such protective films to pimax (very probable ?) and at some occasions the protective film removal step was skipped on the manufacturing lines (not impossible at all if the film is barely visible because it is thin, clear, and applyed without bubble).

It could explain the blacks dots are not fully eliminated but made less visible, and could also explain the slightly “dirty looking” in addition. And it would explain why only a few 5K+ have less visible dark dots.

Theory 2:

The 5K+ panel with visible black dots is the lowcost version and the manufacturer also have a more expensive version with a film (or anything else) added during the manufacturing process.

Then not being able to follow the pimax demand some 5K+ panel batchs were completed with the more expensive version without Pimax being made aware of that…

This might be an idea. Though tbh not a display tech expert but this suggests maybe help with backlight?

This won’t let me create a link

The Oculus Go apparently has them too. So maybe someone with it might know better. But from what I have read is a property of the panel & Robin gave the explanation to improve contrast. So maybe light dispersion. Or dots if fine enough might serve to enhance perceived color.

Just know this was a well documented property of the 5k+ much like the difference between lcd & oled.

It’s not official Pimax news, but it seems the most likely explanation. Look a this illustration…

My guess is that there are at least 500 to 2000 of the unloved sibling of the 5k+ around, the lack of enthusiam to replace them would therefore be understandable.
Weird though that none of the three amigos reported anything about it, either the M2 units didn’t have it or it’s not easily noticable.
If the Occulus Go has the pattern as well and Pimax deems it as an improvement why occilate between different panels for the same product?

Sweviver mentioned the pattern on the 5k+ back in Sept/Oct '18- I remember seeing some images of Lucky’s Tale where he discussed them as a potential issue but not a deal breaker.

I don’t know if later HMDs had panels that made the issue more obvious though.

Yes I have just been looking around. The only screens I can find with dots are touch sense screens, and for you to not see the dots you need to look straight at the screen, If you look at the screen from an angel they apparently can be seen, and as the pimax screens are angled  :wink::grinning:

Then its still just a theory! Not saying its a bad theory but its certainly not a fact yet.

Your phrasing makes it look like this is confirmed

I received my 5K+ last Tuesday. (backer 41xx) This issue was the first thing I noticed and a total deal breaker for me. I wouldn’t have switched from the 8K if I knew about this issue.

I immediately contacted support but they said this topic is about dead pixels only. :frowning:

It has a lot of sense, if the manufacturers removed the layer with the spacer dots it would explain the dirty effect and why they are now barely visible, because a little part of them remain on the underlayer

Support Site is broken for weeks now
cant open it…

Good memory, I’ve linked the video and it starts right off where he mentions it.
