8KX Review After Almost Three Weeks

Nope, it’s pretty smooth. Now, I’ve been using 80Hz/90Hz with my Index…so if you’re used to 120/144Hz you may notice it…but it doesn’t bother me.

does this pixels pattern keeps static when you move head & look straight around this solid colour background?

It looks like mura for me

Otherwise it might be some software/firmware filters I guess

Great to hear your pleased overall with your 8KX. I would really love someone to do a true comparison with the G2.

Yes they’re static. I thought mura was an obvious change in color…but I see there’s something called “black spot” mura. Still not sure if this is the same thing…

so it’s not “black dots” it’s mura then as everybody said before, so all is good.

actually every manufacturer has this problem but they greattely solve it with firmware filters, unfortunately it’s factory based procedure though so unlikely there is easy way to do it on customer side

Well, they are dots, that seem to be on one layer of the screen, not based on the actual pixel output, since the color of the dots do not change. I NEVER see anything like your picture, not sure it relates. I guess it could be the "black spot’ mura.

KX just has high pixels density so it’s much smaller than on usual HMDs

You’re zooming in too much to make it look like your picture to be honest. I’ve already zoomed in with the 2nd picture, so you don’t need to keep zooming to make it look like pixelation… It seems like you’re trying to force an issue that’s possibly not true. You seem newish to the forum, so this is from someone in the forum with the 5K+, which shows it’s a pattern and seemingly separate from the pixels themselves:

Im not sure to what you reffer in your 2nd example:

if this one then it looks like SDE to me if you mean that colour inconsistency


then it definitely looks like a mura.

In your first screen, indeed I see dots greed, but what is it if it’s not a mura effect?
between your eyes is lens & it’s transparent, then you have panel it can have some layer with dirty pattern or it’s pixels itself which can’t emit light equally & the grid pattern could be caused by some technological process that affects pixels during panel manufacturing, so it’s still mura - image is inconsistent coz pixels can’t produce equal amount of light which is requeste.

E.g. you have 3 pixel & they asked to emit 100 nits
but actually they emit:
p1: 97%
p2: 100%
p3: 99%

Then after calibration firmware adjusted to decrease difference

p1: 99%
p2: 100%
p3: 99%

or
p:97%
p2:97%
p3:97%

It’s up to chosen strategy & desired result.

Mura patterns can be different it’s up to technological process & patter which pixels got during it

Question, do the dots follow you as you move your head in a game environment just trying to see if this is a possible lens issue maybe the interiors side of the lens was not cleaned properly as one possible explanation?

I’m NOT referring to the color change in the red picture, come on. The pixels NEVER dynamically show incorrect brighter or darker colors. They are permanent dark spots regardless of the rendered colors. You’re still trying to push the color issue, stop. It’s the dots, bigger than the pixels, in the center of the picture. I circled the most prominent one for you:

Again, unlike the 5K+ where they were prominent on red colors, they’re basically unrecognizable on the X unless you stare with a still head on red colors and are more visible on brighter colors (but still not as bad as the 5K+)

They’re part of the screen, not the lens, for sure. I’ve recognized these dots on the 5K+, the Go, and the Index.

finally good picture that shows the problem, but what is it for you if not the pixels problem related with manufacturing process? holes in pixels? common, zoom it & you will see that “black dots” always in the SDE grid coz near pixels don’t work as intent, there are 2 variants:

  1. they have shape imperfection
  2. they emit light differently (where you see the word “colour” light is EM wave, not only frequency, light has different props like amplitude as well (brightness))

And as I told you already many times - mura can have different shapes & definitions

I agreed that it could be the “Black Spot” mura, but you kept trying to push it towards a very obvious color issue, like the regions, which it’s not.

Either way, not very distracting to me.

Not as much. That second one is much less useful.

Ideally, the crosshairs are 1 subpixel wide with exactly 1 pixel spacing, directly at the center of the display, at a variety of depths. When the IPD is aligned, the sweet spot of the lenses will pass directly through the optical axis of the lens of the eyes, and maximum contrast will be seen between the crosshairs at the center.

True, there’s a noticeable sharpness when it’s dialed in right. I think the second one could be good for clarity while looking to the right or left (do the numbers look stable enough, etc). I may flip back and forth to test… Maybe the Pimax Experience app can have multiple tests? I think that would be best.

Initially I thought some graphics to left or right might be useful. In fact, I discovered, the only possibility of such graphics being useful would be a couple small crosshairs at the extreme periphery to check that the headset is not rotated too much. And even that is still in doubt.

All that matters is the center as it turns out. The entire point is to align the sweet spot - other than the limitations of these non-compound fresnel lenses in front of flat screens there is no reason whatsoever to achieve such precise IPD alignment.

Think about the last time you saw a 3D film at a theater with those cheap polarized glasses. Did they adjust the stereo separation for IPD of each human in the audience? No, definitely not.

In fact, for 3D film, or 3D displays in general that aren’t VR headsets, it is quite common to grossly exaggerate the stereo separation.

Added to all that I am very good at viewing stereo pairs cross-eyed…
