8K X SMAS hinges need improvement· - can we DIY fix it?

Same here. If anyone elses notices it hot on the top left side of the 8k x (opposite side of the power button), please report this. It actually feels really hot to me and even though pc is off and hmd is fully powered off now with the brighter red LED showing, its still hot and doesnt seem to be cooling. I will leave it and keep feeling to see if its still staying hot. I have a feeling it’s the USB Port giving it power still.
What’s even worse is that it may cause issues with the housing if it’s constantly heated up so much!

add some velco straps under lower face foam, this should fill the gap…

I noticed it too (PC is off), but we better start another topic

already started a new topic about this…
I left for over an hour, unplugged the black USB on the 8kx, while the DP and the blue USB is still plugged in. It’s SUPER hot.

It’ll fill the gap, but it won’t be the correct angle flush to the face.

silly question here…
By chance did the assembly line people, switch the left and right adapter hinges ?
I haven’t got my 8Kx’s delivered yet so I can’t try if this might be that simple an answer to this problem.
Not thinking clearly though :slightly_smiling_face: I’m a bit hung over today
Scratch that, would not work :rofl: or would it…

This doesn’t look right. The strap definitely should go lower than that. What I immediately noticed is that you seem to have a different version of the hinges, they simply dont look like the ones I have used and using on my headsets.

This brings me to believe the hinges MIGHT be upside down, or simply reversed incorrectly (from factory?). The left hinge should be on right side and vice versa.

Could you try to swap them?

I don’t know if this works. But maybe the cable don’t have enough slack. And that’s why he couldn’t put the mas down enough.

i posted a picture further up, it shows exactly what is the issue with (my version of) the hinge.

there is either not enough relief for the strap to rotate freely or too much so the stop will be worn out fast. I’m unsure what the intent really was because it looks like they was lets do this, no this and ended up in the middle.

I’m trying to make some replacements when i remember how to use fusion 360.

I will report this to the team, thanks for pointing it out!

Its interesting to me how much flak op got in this thread(from people who dont even have the headset no less) and it turns out there actually might be a defect in his setup that probably would have never been addressed if it wasn’t call out.

Some people here need to chill out on the white knighting.

:pray::muscle::clap::clap::clap: THANK YOU

FINALLY we’re getting some clarification

Martin the hinges arent the issue i believe. I think its The little plastic piece that holds the strap on to the headset. Once you lock it in there are notches in it that do not allow the strap to get pulled down anymore on the back of the head.

Also, thank you for noticing something doesnt seem right either. Those adapter pieces rotate inside the hinge one way to lock the strap in place. The only way to allow it to angle lower is to start forcefully pushing past the bump stops or breaking the stops off altogether.

Also theres another even worse problem i fear may start degrading or causing something worse to the 8k X.

If you go to this post:
https://community.openmr.ai/t/8k-x-i-noticed-it-gets-hot-even-when-the-pc-is-off-but-theres-2-stages-for-the-off-switch/30619/6
youll see that myself and some others have felt the top of the 8k X Housing, where the DP/USB Cable is located on the HMD, it becomes incredibly hot and only after a couple of minutes. My brother coincidentally felt it and got worried and he doesnt even understand these headsets. Its clearly not supposed to get this hot. I will try to get a thermometer to test the temp that the housing is reaching but its at a point where it shouldnt be touched almost. Also, it kept pulling power from either usb and even though the PC was off, because i have in my bios settings ErP allowing the usb ports to still have power, the headset continues to pull full power and stay in this overheated state. Only when i enabled ErP to shut off the usb power did it cool down after the pc shut off.

the “adaptor pieces” is what i call the hinge just to avoid confusion.

This could get confusing lol

well since martin was talking about turning the hinges upside down or swapping them, i’m assuming that he is talking about your “adapter pieces” as well when he say hinges.

I dont see how that would help It would just start angle the strap down and only allow it to go upwards, assuming they were backwards

it is not the problem anyway just his first guess, i just brought it up as an example of why i think that he means the hinge is the plastic part that goes between the headset and the rigid strap. I’m sure he will clarify if I’m wrong.

The good part at least is that it’s gotten the attention it deserves because I’m not the only one. “most of us” dont have a problem is becoming “some of us” dont have a problem
