8K X Occasionally Blacks out for a few seconds (Potentially Solved, EMI Ground Loop/ Interference likely the cause)

I was about to order another 8k x from amazon to test the theory also

Switched gpu and ANOTHER blackout again.
Next move is to turn off my gpu overclock

I wonder if these blackouts have to do with that brightness slider. I think, although not sure of course), that the blackouts started to happen around the time of that brightness slider being added to pitool - although this is just a shot in the dark.

Also, i know my monitor sometimes will go black because of google chrome whenever i load a video. But i make sure chrome is closed when i use iRacing usually so im not sure if this could be the cause of it.

Hi,
I also have blackouts in DCS of about 5 to 6 seconds in duration with my RMA 8kx. ( the original 8kx had tracking issues which are now resolved with the new RMA unit)
Using latest firmware v2.1.255.298, running at 75 Hz and Pitool 1.0.1.270 with an AMD RX 6900XT GPU.
Had my Brightness slider set to 3.0 for both eyes, will reset to Default (0) and try again.

I just turned off the overclock on my gpu and ran a race - no blackouts.
I’ll keep monitoring it without an OC on my 3090.

A post was split to a new topic: Customer Complaint

Hi,
Turning the Brightness slider in Pitool to default (0) seemed to have done it for me. Played DCS for two hours without any blackout.
P.S. My MSI Radeon AMD RX 6900XT runs at stock speed.(no overclocking from my side)

I swear to you - i thought the brightness slider may be the issue also. Ive been using it at 75-80 for a while, but i remember once i updated to that firmware, that was around the time that the blackouts started happening also

Ill keep testing. If it happens again, ill try that as one of the next options.

I guess both a higher brightness and overclocking Your GPU makes sense as a potential trigger.

Increasing the brightness increases the current being drawn in the headset (but I guess that’s drawn solely via USB?).

Overclocking the GPU increases the current being used by the graphics card (potentially causing a voltage drop via the displayport resulting in worse signal?).

Or maybe both trigger a voltage drop on the PSU (Displayport signal voltage is apparently 3.3V and USB is 5V)?

Possibly. I know 3090’s never had much headroom and i had +100 core and +500 memory but now i just left it at stock. I have to keep playing to see if it happens again. Its happened 3 days in a row, and after i left it at stock, it ran without a blackout. I’ll keep testing to see if it happens again.

Today I ran another 2 hours. Last change was leaving the GPU at stock settings. Yesterday i ran an hour, no blackout
Today I changed the overall brightness slider to default (50) also.

No blackouts yet.

I’ll keep testing to see if this fixes the issue.

Happened to me in both 75 and 90. Happened again last night in 90.

If your GPU is overclocked, turn it off and try again.
Also try turning off that overall brightness slider to 50 or to 0.
So far after 3 hours in the last 2 days it hasnt happened yet but it will take a while to see if it reappears. Last break from the blackouts was 3 weeks for me where it didnt happen and then 3 days in a row it happened. So far im on 2 days with no issues yet.

Another guy mentioned it and some in the comments here:

I’ve had my 8KX for a week used only for sim racing.
The blackouts have occurred for me in iRacing, ACC and Project Cars 2

I am running the Beta firmware for 90hz

In iRacing I would get blackouts multiple times per lap when practicing.
I experimented with a few things like turning off AA but still got the blackouts.

What seems to have fixed the problem is to drop NVidia Virtual Reality pre-rendered frames from 3 to 2.
Ever since that change I have had no further blackouts in iRacing with a couple of hours of further use.

I dont even set pre-rendered frames above 1. If you have a beefy pc, you dont need to run it any higher

Also, i ran another 2+ hours today - no blackouts

Hopefully either the GPU overclock or the HMD overall brightness slider was the issue.

But this will take 1-2 months to really see if it’s gone as i mentioned before i had 3 weeks where i had no blackouts and then it appeared again. It’s a pesky bug to find.

I coulnd’t use th 8KX without the brightness adjustment tbh. I have it set to 91 and together with the reshade fix it looks astonishingly good in VR.

My blackouts went away when I removed both DP and USB extensions and haven’t returned in about 50-60 hours of racing.

This is with brightness set to 91 and my 3090 @ 2GHz using the optical cable.
