You might have seen my post of the review of the 8k+ meh. In it I mention the smear effect you get from the 8k+ panels. A similar effect as the black smear except it happens across all colors with white black having the biggest effect. Seems someone has said that it could be software related I thought I’d start a new thread to solve this incredibly immersive breaking problem.
I’ll start by saying this effect is really bad. So bad in fact that I’m able to get the ghosting effect at least 1 cm away from where the image should be. I am able to get a complete new cart that is at the bottom of the steamvr panel. By moving my head in a circular motion I can encircle the cart with a new ghosted cart.
My findings.
At 72hz the ghosting is substantial less to the point that you might not even notice it. Certainly acceptable. At 110hz the ghost is unbearable. A quick head movement with say advanced settings screen displayed and the screen becomes a ghosting mess. 90hz is not much better than 110hz.
This is not a steamvr bug as I have not only tried beta and non beta version of steamvr. I have also run stormland directly from pitool, eliminating any effects by steamvr. I have also changed the supersampling from one extreme to the other with no effect.
This brings me to the conclusion that it is either a firmware issue or a panel issue. I have only tried the latest pitool so it could be that also. Does anyone know what other pitools work with the 8k+ and I’ll give them ago.
@Decapper i got firmware from Pimaxquorra because i had the dim display problem.
I don’t detect any smearing, in PC2 and ED the more demanding games, i notice very minor ghosting(when looking at fps and shaking my head but not in gameplay) on 90hz but none on 110 hz.
Here is the firmware i got, hope it works for you, its meant for Pitool 260 but i use it with 253
@Ludiks and @mixedrealityTV could maybe weigh in. But yeah it could be a defective unit as I would hope they wouldn’t do a full release with this kind of flaw present.
I tend to agree that there is a white smear/ghost on my 8K+
It noticeable when looking at …say a white track map outline and you move your head left and right…
takes a few milliseconds to “catchup” to where the actual picture is.
I think it may be panel persistence.
for me its def worse at the 110hz setting.
Thanks, I tried this firmware and the ghosting is still the same. In fact the more I see it the worse it gets. It’s like something that you can’t unsee. 110hz is very bad, and 90hz is not much better. Just push your environment change button in steamvr and move you head around in a circle. You will see the ghosting on all the white text stand out like DB. Its really bad. Unless they fix this software wise these panels are only suitable for 72hz.
Pitools must behave differently on other videocards then, or its one of the components of your headset that causes this. Why not pm pimaxquorra he can contact a software engineer.
@Alex.liu could you please look in to this ghosting effect I and others are having with the 8k+. It seems either software related or the screens are not low persistence enough to go any faster than 72hz.
What is your fps and GPU / CPU ms in fpsvr app? Are you sure that your game and steamvr settings can hit stable 72 , 90 or 110 fps ? It doasnt sound like defective unit when you wrote that at 72 is mnimal, 90 is bad and 110 very bad…
I can also say that I noticed it, lately. AS I mentioned I had 110hz, and also contrast boosted. Never did notice it until about 3 days ago. Maybe at those settings, that’s when the panel firmware gets bugy?
I can provoke it with other settings, but then it’s not realistic or noticeable in Games (extrem swinging left/right also slightly shows it in 90hz)
