i’d count it more like this
100/170° are horizontal, so lets take only hor. pixels and lets reduce it by 1/3rd for overlap and utilization
that would be (ppd = pixel per degree)
1440 / 100 = ~14,5 ppd (vive)
1920 / 100 = ~19 ppd (vive pro)
3413 / 170 = ~20 ppd /pimax 5k oled)
so as a raw estimate the ppd is similar for vive pro and 5k, if the pixel layout is comparable (not used area = sde) then the result might look not so different from the vive pro
there is also a good margin for different pixel layout, lenses, utilization, … but imho kind of realistic to expect it at best to be on the level of the vive pro or worse but better than vive and basically that’s what pimax was saying about the 5k oled version, sde below expectations so not to recommend to picky power users like most of the backers
the interesting part imho is sharpness and how text can be read and because of pentile (less pixel when you count of sub pixel base) it will be lesser then 5k+ and at best of vive pro level, so people expecting the text readability of the 5k+ will have no fun with the 5k oled (imho), we might see soon in 2-3 weeks if pimax sends out something for the testers before the holidays
From the start what I heard form people trying it they compared the BE edition SDE to original Vive rather than the Pro at the start and didn’t recommend it even though it had better blacks, so I was a bit confused when Sebastian said it was like the pro.
I’m not really too bothered with the colors on the 5k
Yes - some of us have been calling for ages, for a mastering, transport and reproduction standard, so that a developer can set a value, and safely expect it to come out as intended (EDIT: or as close as any given display can come) on any HMD. Something based on rec2020 (with any required extensions added) should do.
as the 5k oled is still in the lab some people (including me) might have hoped pimax got a better panel and it improved over the version shown in berlin and the us (and korea?)
atm it seems that for the price and schedule pimax and we are aiming for you can’t have all in one package (also min. 80Hz)
less sde → LCD → weak colors (already known from the WMR HMD’s)
great black and colors → OLED → strong SDE, higher res with min. 80Hz seems to be hard to get (for a price in our range), even samsung was not using higher res or oled with “thinner sde” for its OD+ just some clever tricks diffusing light
the pattern is more like pentile so some people looking at the 8k might be reminded of the oled pentile they have seen for years (vive/rift) and dont like it (might be one smaller part why some people like the 5k+ more, my guess most will be problems from 1440p signal → scaler → sub pixel pattern of the 8k panel)
oke thats funny i hated my vive and sold it, but i like the 8k much more than the 5k+
edit not to make the answer to easy. The pixeldensity is so uncomparible finer then the vive that the pixellayout is no issue in compare to vive/rift
It’s not old tech, lcd is old tech. Oled and lcd just have different strong points. Lcd is far from VR nirvana, it is just more available with RGB subpixel layout and cheaper than oled (that’s why the 5KBE costs more).
Actually yes. Oled colors are not realistic. Take an oled smartphone, make a pic of a strawberry and then lay the phone besides that strawberry. You will be surprised.
Oled by itself won’t make good colors, it needs to be well calibrated for that (and then the content creator can still use “unrealistic” or unpleasant colors).
i’d say you’ve proven my argument about the pattern was wrong
it was just a idea that i had when having the option to compare 5k+ and 8k at he Gouda meetup, i could spot the sde on both in seconds and there was a noticeable difference
proven your point? Explane that
For me it’s unbelievable people hardly notice much difference between 16,6 milion and 7,5 milion pixels.not to mention the pixel layout…
