I am not sure how accurate this method is due to the wide FOV of the 8K but here goes. Ok @mixedrealityTV posted a Transference gameplay clip with the 8K and at one point he looks at a bottle of chloroform in the garage on a shelf. He takes steps back until he can no longer read the word “chloroform” on the side of the bottle. I ran the same test on the Oculus Rift using 1.5 SS in the Oculus Tray tool. Hopefully this highlights how close you have to be to read the same text across the two HMDs. That said I am not sure how representative these are based on the wide fov we are seeing from the 8K (does it make it appear Seb is standing further back?). Also I stopped when I could still see the text but could no longer make out each individual letter. There comes a point where the brain fills in the blanks for you because you know what it says. A good way to counter this is to reach your limit point, turn away for a few seconds then look again.
This is how far Seb is using the 8K before he can’t read any longer
The only problem with that is once you already know the word you’ve read you know what to look for. It would have been better suited to start far away from the word and work closer till you can read it. Like those “can you see it” pictures where once you see it you cant unsee it. Not that it would take away that he can read it far away just it’s a better test I believe.
Yeh that’s why my test was when I could no longer read individual letters. I have reached out to seb to perhaps try again and look at the floor as well to see where he stands in relation to a drain on the floor.
Just gonna do a new one at the start of the game so that others can just jump in without having to play Transference up to the same point. I am just testing to see if the game runs on the 4K. Will post comparison pics. Let’s hope Seb can do the same once I have the Rift/4K reference images.
BTW the main PimaxVR website is infected with links to spam sites.
Ok, I just tried this with the 4K in the area at the start of the game. Pitool set to 3.0. Sadly due to the distortion it’s hard to get a fully accurate reading but, they seem to be the same distance as each other oddly enough. I will play through to get to the garage and conduct the same test with the chloroform bottle from there.
That said, the quality difference, aside from being too dark is
not sure what that’s gone proof, even with the pictures taken, the result is not “measurable” as there is no scale for the distance, if 5k and 8k end up close in distance the you will see no difference in the picture
why not using the tool already known
ROV Test FOV & Resolution
at least you can see how far you are away in a much more precise way
Ok well this will be the last image set from me but you are right there is a less accurate measure for distance aside from looking at the floor to tell how far away you are in relation to assets in the game, in this case the drain cover on the floor.
Be aware the screens are rendered at different resolutions so makes it harder to tell when looking straight ahead. However, the second set of images based on where you stand speak for themselves. You are further away on the 4K than the rift.
My conclusion is you can stand further back on the actual drain cover to read the text with the 4K whereas for the rift you need stand off the drain closer to the glass beaker on the floor. Therefore 4K has better text readability from distance than the rift. Maybe this was obvious and didn’t need me to do this. lol.
Because you are standing further away on the 4K so can see the drain in view. Because you are closer on the Rift the drain is behind you or more directly below you (without breaking my neck looking downwards). There is a descrepacy with how far I am looking down in both shots. But I can assure you, with the Rift I was not standing ON the drain, but in front of it slightly.
