Hi guys!
I’ve looked everywhere for a confirmation and am hoping someone can answer this.
I recently bought a new computer to run a VR headset and apon seeing the Pimax VR 8k, I’ve decided I’d really like to pre order (back them on kickstarter). However, I’ve seen mixed messages on what rig needed to run this well.
The kick starter states you need a gtx 980 I believe while some websites say it is highly probable that will not work.
Before investing 1000$ ( canadian here) I’d like confirmation on if my i7 with gtx 1080 will be sufficient and if not, is there a way to lower the resolution on the headset to make things run smoother? (Sorry noob here). Or should I just settle for the 5k headset instead?
Hi @Hellkath We recommend GTX 980/1070 to run 8K VR. As Heliosurge mentioned, we use a laptop with 1070 graphics card to do demo all the time.
GTX 1080 will be sufficient to run 8K for sure.
Ok turns out I have another question…
They do say that the 8K VR will play most games… what I’d like to know, is for those that are already on a Pimax product… Is playing Vive/Steam or Oculus games user friendly or do I have to download 2-3 third party programs and start learning programming to be able to play these games? lol…
I’m of course exaggerating but point is, is it as easy as playing say an oculus game from oculus or a vive game from vive?
All I care about are games so this has to be the best gaming headset!
Basically all steamvr and Oculus vr games should work… It’s the non vr games that either won’t work or need a 3rd party app to help then render in vr… Apps like Revive or VORPX for instance.
Additionally…
If you use the latest piplay drivers the PiPlay home will show all of your vr content from both steam and Oculus and you can launch it from piplay directly.
But that’s not how I do it… I found that launching steamvr from within steam in your steam library page bottom left of the library all of your steam vr and Oculus games and apps appear there! And you can launch them from there as well!
I was afraid you had to play in some sort of third party settings every time you wanted to start a VR game… a bit like hacking your way in an illegal platform.
No not at all… games that have been designed for VR (like robot recall) and games that have been modded for vr (Like Elite dangerous). will work fine. some games have been hacked to work in vr (like dying light, alien isolation, project cars etc) need to use 3rd party tools to get them to work (or in some cases just by adding the ‘-vr’ into the properties in the steam launcher as they were never designed for vr but have been modded by the game devs or fans of the game.
I use the 4K version and my hardware is 1080 gtx, i7, 32 GB RAM and SSD Hdd. So I was sure I had the power do run what ever, but running Project cars 1 and 2 or Assetto corsa I have to go for medium in graphic seting. Maybe driving around in 250 Km is very graphic demandig? I can not see a reason to buy 8K and lowering the seting to minimum.
Well I’ve backed the project 8K hoping for the best but now I’m wondering if I should change it for the 5K version.
I tend to get mad when I have to lower resulution on games and I’m kind of stressed now that if ebjornan is having trouble with 4K… what will 8K be like?? must use even more juice to run such high resolution…
So what you’re saying, if I understand correctly, is that whether I get the 5K or 8K, the computer specs would have to be the same? So buying 5K would offer me no benefit at all performance wise?
Alright, time for another question!
I’ve seen somewhere that the 8k version will be connected by a DP 1.4.
At first I didn’t bother with the comment because I had no idea what that was lol.
But I’ve seen it again once or twice so I looked it up.
Now I’m worried again because I’m not sure I have that connection on my computer!
I got a computer ‘built for VR’ but I think it had Oculus or Vive in mind because what I do have is a front hdmi with usb 3.0 ports.
So I guess my question is… will I be able to plug it still? (Is there a sort of converter available?) or am I screwed? Lol
The above is a 1080 gtx made by gigabyte the top 3 ports are DP.
If you know the maker of your 1080 gtx you will get specs. The top 3 look similar to hdmi but bottom is square for opening. The connector at the bottom is hdmi. Your card ma have mini dp instead but you can get mini dp to full size adapters if needed
