Just wondering. Since the upscaled 8K is so good with the upscaling that it actually looks better than the 5k native resolution. Why not upscale to 5K from a lower resolution as well, so more PCs and laptops can play it? I mean, what advantage does 5k native have over 5k upscaled, if you say that 8kx is not noticeably different from the upscaled 8K (from 5k). This would make the wireless module you are planning to make easier to produce as well, would it not?
Thing is, from the roadtovr review, it seems like you are still a long way from having to worry about foveated rendering, brainwarp etc right?
But obviously, don’t change the FOV… 200 degrees FOV more or less would still be ideal.
With the upscaling technology used it‘s not possible that the 8k looks sharper than the 5k. It‘s just an improvement in terms of SDE.
The software has to guess pixels. This makes it more blurry.
My point is to make the 5K to have a resolution of 3K for example then have it upscaled to 5K. This would make the processing power less demanding right?
If I am to do it on the PC, am I supposed to downscale the resolution for less processing power, so that it can be upscaled in the headset to 5k? I must be missing something here.
That are horrible comparing pictures. I’m not even sure if this is not the old 5k oled screen.
Also the perspective is not the same. For me the 5k picture looks better.
5k is a light version to decrease the cost. Adding upscale function might add cost, so it’s not suitable with 5k version as 5k version decreases its cost (compared to 8k) in exchange for upscaling technology.
You can run the game on any resolution ( same way you do already with PC games in settings )
If you choose to run the game at lower resolution it will be easier to run and your GPU will upscale it to your display.
Upscaling is not very much processing, so it doesn’t matter if you do it on GPU or on HMD, as long as your cable can handle it.
In this case, the game would be run in 3k, your GPU will upscale it to 5k and you will get upscaled image on your HMD.
If you did the up-scaling on the HMD it would be almost exactly the same.
I see…
However it seems like pimax’s upscaling solution is pretty good. If you see the picture in one of my post. I really feel that the upscaled 8K looks better than the native 5k, does it not (some would disagree but I can imagine that most would agree)? Will the quality be the same, if I use smaller resolution on the pc, and the hmd upscales it to 5k?
Upscaling on the hmd requires only 1 wire, but do you think this is the only reason? It seems like usually PCs have a few unused usb slots at least (they could combine hdmi with usb, or hdmi with display port, if the pc have only 1 hdmi or DP port right? I am not very technical, so please forgive me if what i said is stupid)
On PC you can choose how good you make the up-scaling and how much anti aliasing you want to use, so it is usually as good as or better then what you get on hardware, but if you want to make it better it costs some processing power ( usually still significantly less than running the game at higher res )
The number of ports is not the problem, I think.
More wires is harder to get working right and you have more wires attached to your head, giving you more weight and such.
The reason I went with the 5k is native resolution without upscaling ( live with a bit of SDE ) and it works 5 Hz faster than running through an upscaling chip , Sure they could ship the 5k headsets by now if we weren’t waiting to solve 8k upscaling/screen refresh issues
