Im wondering if it would make a huge difference in image quality when viewing videos, like in Whirligig, if setting the Steam VR SS to match the native resolution of the Pimax 8K. This probably has been discussed a few times but Im wondering what would be best setting??
I would reccommend checking with @noro
and thats not 2x4k, pimax uses ~2/3 of the panel as the panels don’t move with the IPD adjustment and the lenses might waste some area of the panel too
so there is no “native resolution” and you might want to use a 4k or higher res video for testing to have less effects from upscaling when comparing different SS settings
I would think the native input would be the upscaler’s input res is in the 8K. I cant remember what it is though
IIRC, it is 2K per eye
Qhd 2560Ă—1440/eye
Ok thx, so my render quality in Pitool is 1, Whirligig is 0, so at this time I can open Steam VR and set the Custom Resolution for Whirligig to multiples of 1440 correct?
My understanding is that the scaling varies considerably, depending on how close the pixels are to the optical center of the lens. (To double the number of pixels per-unit-distance, the number of pixels might need to increase by a factor of 4 (or maybe more, depending on the lens, in a non-linear way.)
For SimpleVR in 3D blueray (2xfullsize side-by-side source), I have Pimax quality at 2.0, SteamVR on Auto, in-app 8xAA and scaling at 1.5. This gives me the highest quality image I can get, at a near-constant 80 fps.
Whirligigs SS is very demanding unfortunately, especially depending on the codecs you use.
Still a great player though.
Since the major improvements I use DEO a lot but Whirligig as well (great for 2D Movies in VR).
Simple Player is still the best in terms of quality and resources but its lacking many great features that the other players implemented over time.
Theoretically SS should be a multiple to achieve the best pic but in reality I can say “The higher The Better”
Try to max out till you’ll have fps drops.
With whirligig you will notice to achieve bigger SS resolution through steam SS.
