About these translations in the software, I am a software coder myself and translations aren’t as hard as it might seem to incorporate even when mucking around. If translation is an issue they struggle with I’m sure a lot of forum deellers here will be happy to help out
Good luck then, I feel you
Who’s defending anything?
You need to install software/driver for headset.
Your setup time & problems will match htc vive with steam tracking.
Plug N play will take time to implement. Now Openxr may help to change that. From my awareness there is no real generic hmd driver so plug N play? No not until after install.
No first gen product is without some issues.
Plus we backers are Early Adopters. Often even new cpu & gpu series often have kinks at release.
Indeed as you may recall we had a user making a translation file for Germen users.
So really @burstingtops just needs to realise as a kickstarter pledger. You are an early adopter. Pimax did say they would take feedback & this may influence changes ie software interface changes & features.
Concerned about possible Chinese characters in menu & install etc? Well wait til software has a non beta release & never click participate in beta.
I usually wait 6 months to a year before grabbing the latest truly new hardware. Not rebranded upgraded stuff. Ie i have an r9 390 which we know is basically a rebranded r9 290).
As was it @noro said when he first bought a z170 motherboard from Asus not everything worked out of the box. Now I am sure new manufactured mb of this model come with newer bios already flashed & likely stamped with Rev 2.0 or 3.0
Then there is how often Windows updates break things & sometimes a simple gpu driver update breaks things.
But good news Horse shoes works out if the box & may come with the to put tge spikes in the ground.
Just be sure to read safety instructions carefully to avoid serious injuries.
Good points, and I would like us to stay focus on the matter at hand.
When I speak about Pimax setup, I can only expect Pimax own software to be in acceptable level and not third party.
So I believe sane expectations:
-
PiPlay - Pimax in house software, controlled by Pimax team, so we should expect smoother experience.
-
SteamVR - Valve software, third party, not controlled by Pimax, so some compatibility issues might be.
-
Revive - I believe it is a one man show, not controlled by Pimax, issues will probably be the norm.
-
Drivers - I’m not sure it is same as PiPlay, but it is controlled by Pimax, so I expect for smoother experience.
This is what I see as experience from Pimax, what they control, they should do well, or we can expect from them to do well (software wise speaking), what is not, we can just hope and wait for Pimax or more experience users to assist in solving them.
Cheers
Driverwise. Yes the vr headset driver is theres. Other key drivers like gpu are not.
But yes Driver releases should be generally good unless you apply to betas. At least on par with GPU driver releases. While I can count it still annoys me how often I have had to rollback a vid card driver due to issues.
Now thats an idea @Heliosurge. Someone needs to create a video game featuring Lawn Darts, Horseshoes and Bags. Shouldn’t be to difficult I would think. Sorry off topic I know. So to add my two cents. Having the Vive and Rift for 2+ years you are going to face issues I expect with Pimax getting things initially set up and from time to time as I have experienced that with both the Vive and Rift, usually it is a fairly simple matter to get things back in order and thankfully I still enjoy using VR after being somewhat seasoned now. How about full old school and add shuffle board or whats that Canadian game called where they push the large stone over ice and broom in front of it like mad to reach the target?
Include grenades too… wait… make that random exploding Lawn Darts. You have to hit your opponent or the goal on the other side. Or maybe make the effects of the darts random… Hmmm…
It would make a great multiplayer game.
It’s called curling.
Of course I’d like to have everything working smoothly from the start. But as I said unfortunately this seems to be naive. Also this lowered expectations should not encourage Pimax to do less of course if it’s that what you’re afraid of.
Let’s be clear although I do not own a 4k I’m well aware of the issues that had/still have despite very capable non Pimax people put a lot effort in fixing stuff. I mean there is a reason why people buy the vive pro despite insane prices. Definitely not only because of the slightly higher resolution. It’s also because of the thought of insurance that a company like HTC will take issues faster “at heart”. With recent reviews I’m not sure whether this is still the case but the perception is still spread widely. Especially in Germany where we trust our labels and are used to a certain level of quality. I’m usually a glass half full kinda guy but dealing with asian mentality (I’m in Thailand right now btw) I’ve learned to approach things differently. Luckily we can send stuff back in Germany within two weeks later with full refund. But Kickstarter is a different story.
Downloading a driver isn’t a big deal. Just remember the state of the software at the end of the Beta is what will appear in reviews, and even if it’s improved at some point in the future it will affect how Pimax is perceived.
If the setup is overly complicated and full of chinese characters, it will reflect badly on Pimax for a long time to come.
Yes we are well aware of how much people hated changes to the ux after Windows 7 & many are still not happy with Windows 10 either & there is still things sloppy in Windows 10. Ie 2 different spots to affect settings & each spot doesn’t have complete full settings. Lol
With the headset the driver will typically be
A) Software updates
B) Firmware uodates
If you opt fir beta you might see chinese chars here & there.
However on a similar note Spanish folk are just as likely have similar feelings if interface is only in chinese & english.
Which we have already had a fellow cresting a language file translation to germen.
End result as an early adopter you can help beyond simply financial aid if you have time & desire to support this project in different ways.
I recall just how many hoops a friend of mine had to jump through to get the Oculus dk1 & dk2 up n running in early days.
Primary benefit here is that the team has previous experience & are using things like valve tracking. Potenially less guess work & in spite of the issues with the 4k; a siimple easy interface & setup has akways been their goal. Probably why we have had difficulty at times with requests fir sn advance settings tab. Lol
I’m right with you there about Windows failings, But Windows already has a monopoly so they can get away with a lot more. Pimax is the underdog and their competition will only get stronger. This is their big chance, I hope they don’t screw it up for their sake and ours.
Indeed but as long as they launch successfully. The market they are targeting is untapped with this kind of headset.
Let me explain. Generally speaking up until now all vr headsets have limited FoV & compete with one another within a small resolution variance.
Consumer 1st release 1080p to slight plus.
- Main Headset Camps: Oculus/HTC/OSVR/PSVR
Consumer 2nd release Qhd (2.5k) to 2880*1600
Main Players: WMR/OSVR/HTC/pimax/deepoon
Yes minor notes many others but less known & Oculus has the go etc. Still no FoV significant improvement.
Gen2 legit wants Hi-FoV, Hi-Res
Nothing released so far within consumer reach.
Pimax is atm the only one posed to release first. Though some think Oculus has a chance with varifocus 140 FoV but only time will tell.
Should have bought a Vive
Although jk’ing to be fair the Rift does commonly suffer from some odd USB issues and the solution for roomscale is a messy afterthought. Vive is simpler and the lighthouse solution does make things simpler and I’m pleased Pimax have latched on to this for the 5K/8K/8K-X.
People seem to make out Vive setup is much more involved than Rift where imo its the opposite.
Lighthouse v2 should help further with the sync scenario removed.
People on the forum have been have offering to translate the software since the P4K launched. Clearly Pimax dont think it’s a priority
They opened up the help file after a user who was doing translations found it has been closed.
Users assisting with translations is a good way to contribute with those whom are bilingual.
To be honest, easy plug & play is something I’d classify as a “nice to have”. It is certainly a factor and something that will come up in reviews. It is not however critical. Whether you need 5 minutes or 30 minutes to set up the device, as long as it works as desired afterwards, it’s fine for me. We’re all early adopters of new technology here, let’s face it. You cannot expect it to just work perfectly smoothly out of the box just yet
I am a tinkerer. I expect no plug and play. I have no issues fiddling to get it to run. It is important to me that the HMD works and does not make my eyes hurt.
It should be plug and play - don’t get me wrong. I am just among those who can live with having to work around problems as long they are fixable. I would never back a kickstarter expecting a flawless product.
