VR News for 2024

Webxr is more an add on and as it says web only. Djonko though what he initially said stands no native content and like he said also not really enough space to for downloaded videos.

Iirc one of the actual workarounds is ALXR that gives access to steam as well.

Not really a big deal. Not really a consumer device. Have to wait for the next AVP headset and see what that brings

I think the misconception is due the fact that Apple doesn’t allow porn APPS. You can perfectly play porn vids though. And you don’t need space for downloaded video’s at all, you can just stream from either a windows share, like you’d do with any SteamVR headset, or just directly from the website (visionOS2.0 has webXR indeed now enabled by default so that’s also not any problem anymore). The only thing it does not do, at least not out of the box, is passthrough porn, since Apple doesnt give developers access to the cam feed. But it’s also possible, with some limitations, for example via ALVR. But yeah, I think it’s a stupid decision to block the cam feed. I understand it’s mostly due to possible privacy breaches, but why not let the user decide if they want to take such risk? Meta on the other hand is opening up the cam feed even more. But then again, Meta never really worried about privacy at all

And yes there are now good 180/360 players indeed

Yes that was very true unfortunately! Meta Explains Why It Sees Wide Field-of-View Headsets as a 'bad tradeoff'

Sounds like we soon might own a collector’s item @twack3r LOL

Damn that’s not good news at all. When apple introduced this headset I really thought that VR would FINALLY take off and become mainstream. Now VR feels more dead than ever …

This is the conclusion I’ve had for some time. VR seems dead. I still have the Pico 4 and There’s no headset that makes me want to upgrade to.

With Meta only making standalone headsets and no other company yet making the jump to pancake 140FOV it’s just check mate.

I got excited about Metas Wide FOV headset but they just don’t want to release it as a PCVR only headset.

Pimax don’t have the skill or the money to make a pancake 140FOV headset

Somnium and Hypervision don’t want to make a pancake headset.

Sony are too cautious to make a mass market 140FOV headset.

And the mass market won’t buy into VR unless they get past the claustrophobic 100FOV headsets like Quest offers.

I’m at the point where I don’t think VR will take off in the next 10-15 years.

Hopefully some new company can surprise us all and take VR by storm - like DJI who already cater for the Drone world with their HMD that have very similar technology. I really think DJI will be the saviour of VR.

Yeah not good here is another article

Apparently some had stop producing since May after Making enough parts for 500k to 600k AVPs.

VR is currently in an odd but predictable place with Meta dominance of the standalone market at huge ongoing cost which Zuckerberg has underwritten, this obviously had a big impact on software development with VR targeting mobile hardware.

I recently checked out ā€œSteam next festā€ which had numerous VR demos to download.

I tried 10 different demos and majority were really poorly executed, graphically ugly or even caused technical problems (one game lowered and rotated my steamVR play space which I’ve never experienced before).

It was like going back to 2016 after the vive launch where floods of crap appeared, before we started to get good PCVR games.

Then at the other end of the market is the PCVR simming scene which is busy, energetic and spending big bucks on higher resolution headsets, powerful gaming rigs and simulation software with paid dlc providing accurate vehicle models.

As a PCVR enthusiast, I got great value from using the Pimax Crystal for simming, visual experiences and Into the Radius which massively benefits from the resolution bump, darker blacks and higher contrast.

Also still using Index for ā€œgamingā€ like 144hz beat saber and Pistol Whip, and classic older titles which look good with super resolution in the index.

As long as I have some key titles to play and equipment to use I’m happy with the current situation.

Talking of equipment this was fun but didn’t really wow me, which actually surprised me.

Qualcomm XR if not mistaken are ARM CPUs. If so the ongoing to now recent legal fight between ARM $ Qualcomm could make things interesting for All in one mobile VR. Iirc Meta was looking to move away from Qualcomm at some point

I don’t see this as a negative at all tbh.

In fact I am quite surprised by the unit numbers mentioned in those articles, I would have expected them to be below half a million and closer to 250-300k.

To expect a baseline $3,500 device to become anywhere close to mainstream is ludicrous, even when not considering the disastrous consumer spending behaviour in all relevant markets for the last 2 1/2 years.

With BYD, Samsung, Huaweis, Qualcom etc. all jumping onto the premium, standalone HMD train offering a pancake lens form factor, gesture and ET-based UX, and high-PPI/PPD micro-OLEDS, there is simply no relevant place for an Apple alternative that sits way high above the most likely price point those competitors will offer.

So Apple moved the market (again and particularly when it comes to creating visual design expectations as well as UX ā€˜perfection’), has supplied more than 500k units to devs and a couple of whale customers, and is developing a less pricey successor, that can rely on what is already my favorite OS and ecosystem for engaging with VR and AR content bar none.

I’d say that is a pretty good position for Apple to be in right now and in line with realsitic expectations, given the current gloabl economic climate.

On a personal level, I have never used an HMD as frequently and regularly as the AVP. It has become my number 1 media consumption device and fully replaced my home cinema setup as well as my TV.

Once I will hopefully get compatible controllers from the Surreal Touch KS, I can test how happy I could be with the AVP as a roomscale HMD, streaming via ALVR. As of right now, I use ALVR to play non-motion controller enabled UEVR titles and I am absolutly loving it.

For the simrig I prefer my XR-4 but that has by now become the sole task of that wired HMD.

I am not seeing all doom & gloom here either - sure, they might have expected a bit more in terms of sales figures, but it always was a devkit & early adopter toy, nothing more. And in 2025 they might be releasing the Apple Vision for $2k, so it would seem logical to stop producing components when their projected need till such release has been satisfied.

Not worried to much here - theyā€˜ll need to make it much lighter & comfy to get traction, this device was never going to be a massive success.

Gruber actually describes the exact same perspective that I have but way more compellingly:

Well said. The way media covers anything XR related with such contempt always bothers me. Even a mac fanboy website like that manages to give snide to apple, bizarre.

@Djonko @twack3r collector’s item it is

Projection for AVP2

It’s just a hit piece.

It reiterates and also falsely frames all the information we discussed before.

Hey @twack3r did you ever try hooking up a bluetooth keyboard and mouse? I understand that that’s now possible as of VisionOS2.0. Planning to buy some apple keyboard/mouse, my plan is to manage teamviewer with that, would be awesome. When I’m not at home I’d use to do that on a laptop but that’s always a relatively small screen so I just figured I’ll need to try this on the AVP!
