Upgraded 8k Panel for my 4k?

Dear Pimax! @Pimax-Support

Will there be any chance for me to purchase one of the new low persistence 4k panels of the 8k and swap it with the one in my 4k?

My 4k never worked as promoted. Not only did i receive a unit with wrong lens/lensholder combo, also my shutters had wrong timing (i think) and so i had way to much ghosting. Thanks to you guys i got free new lenses to swap and while doing that i chose to remove both shutters and doing an IPD mod. Best decision ever, but of course the smearing (high persistence) of the panel makes it not suitable for fast paced games.

If the low persistence panel of the 8k has the same dimensions and connector then i would love to swap the panels. This would make the 4k the optimal headset (even so it has no positional tracking) for me until my 8k and 8k-x arrives in a couple of month (hopefully  ).

The information that you adjust the backlight of the 8k panels makes me think you order new ones anyway, so what do you do with the bunch of panels you have already? Maybe use them for an upgraded 4k without shutters?

I will be in Shanghai in March (at the Domotex), so i could pick the panel up and pay you.

Btw.: as an 8k and 8k-x backer i would like to receive the one 8k (for my 8k-x to exchange it afterwards) as soon as possible (even if running only at 80Hz, i can compare it to my vive and cv1 and test it for you with racing games, ED and VorpX) and for the other two 8k - take your time to do whatever necessary to get it right.

All the best!
Werner

I would be really impressed and suprised if this would be possible. Sadly I don´t think it is.
Just think about smarthphones, I can´t recall any case where a display A fit from phone A into phone B and so on.

On the 4k. Truthfully @elo would be correct imho. To upgrade the 4k to a 4k panel from the 8k would require more than a simple panel swap.

More than likely the new panels have a different pin out & would require different firmware then what the 4k uses. They also use different methods to acheive their respected low persistance.

The 4k is 60hz where as the 8k’s 4k panel is 90hz.

The tech is simply not on the same path. Kinda like trying to put an i5 3570 cpu into a skylake motherboard.

But what comes to my mind, is a 3rd Gen Pimax 4k after 1000 and 1007, maybe (who knows what sn they´ll have) a 1012 with this new 4k panel and some new hardware and fixes/upgrades.
So we would have 5-7 diffrent Pimax HMDs with

4k@60/90*,
2.5k@60/90*, OLED

2*2.5@90, OLED

24k@90
2
4k@90X

*if possible

Which would be incredible, then Pimax would rise as a serious company with the BIGGEST portfolio of products of all VR-HMD companies at this moment!
Oculus has only the Rift, HTC/Valve has 2, Vive and Vive Pro, bunch of companies have the MS-MixedReality™ Versions, where Samsung is the clear winner imo but they got just one HMD.

They just need to get there stuff together, improving QC and marketing a bit. The community and support is already great. An the naming sheme should be improved like to make more clear what the product is (GEN, Tier, Resolution, Ratio, Display Type).

imho it is very feasable to use approved technology for new variants, exactly what pimax did when they took 2 4k and merged them together for their first two prototypes. I do not see the need for a change for both the connector and for the panel and as i said it would be stupid to change a working system without reason.

So it would be nice if i could have an answer from @Pimax-Support.

And a custom firmware is also not so difficult to apply. And it would be very customer-friendly. And i think Pimax is very customer-friendly…

Regards!

For example 4k uses sharp panel the 50pin connector i believe not the 60pin one.

So yes there is considerable differences.

4k modified lcd panel 60hz
8k uses clpl panel 90hz

They are not the same tech since the 8k v1 prototype revealed in 2017.

They would have to replace all of the guts of the headset not just the panel.

You have to remember that the hardware of the Pimax 4k, is already at it´s limit.
And a prototype is not a normal type of product. They have probably less then 10 or 20 Pimax 8ks at all, and have tried diffrent hardware configurations with diffrent panel types and design. You shouldn´t expect that a product is as highly modable as a prototype is. That´s all.

Also the energy draw of the 8k is so high that it couses hardware issues like bad tracking, guess if they use the same amound cplp light stripes then our 4k units would go up in flames before steam vr would even start.

Indeed the 4k model is not built like Osvr.

Hi, @mr.uu I am afraid that the method will not work for the time being, but the advice is excellent. We also plan to upgrade the 4K.
Thanks.
