Update #22 29/05/18

I think they would have mentioned that design change. Since many pledged for the lighthouses, and many others already purchased vive lighthouses for the pimax8k

You’re probably right. It would explain though why they’re shipping to the testers without lighthouses.

It’s excruciating that we get these awesome images, but without any explanation or update on what this means as far as meeting the end of month M1 ship date. I can only assume that this means they’re not shipping on time (this time). I hope they prove me wrong. It is so sad knowing that over 2,000 units have to pass through that shelf before mine does :frowning:

Best update yet. As a manufacturer, I can see the beginnings of a serious manufacturing effort underway. More updates like this please. Videos showing the more interesting processes of manufacturing and testing will go a long way to help backers see the value of the work PiMax has done. I feel better about my investment with PiMax already.

Whatever it takes to give us the best 8K they can make.

I’m excited! IIRC I’m a backer number 472 and I don’t expect to receive mine till at least a few months. If not more.

I don’t recall any time since joining the KS where Pimax has said they’re considering a proprietary solution. Like the “will it fit on Caucasian faces” concern , you recently revisited. I don’t remember any of those people in Amsterdam, New York, Frisco or Toronto having issues. It is one thing to be the concerned about what Pimax hasn’t disclosed (I respect your healthy skepticism) and another to go for looking for issues not in evidence. Maybe just waiting until the testers have their way with it, since there is nothing we are going to get out of Pimax that is more meaningful than that, at this point.

Remember that all those people used wired controllers, not wireless. If mem serves me right, V5 actually had wireless tracking but people complained about it being horrible.

Oh they did. They called it ‘PiTracking’ http://community.openmr.ai/t/multiple-tracking-solutions/5149 and then there’s also an “inside out” mode, which they haven’t talked about much.

I’m surprised by 2 things: first that Pimax said that they’re shipping the HMD first without lighthouses and secondly that there are no visible lighthouse sensors on the HMD. Of course there might be some other explanation here, but it does seem weird. Just wondering. Remember how they suddenly dropped the ‘no native resolution support’ bomb on us here, that came out of nowhere. So who knows if something like that will happen again. It wouldn’t be a first.

i dont understand how no matter what pimax shows people keep inventing new things to be freaking out about.

everyone was freaking out about the testing units not being built.

pimax shows detailed pictures of them being built.

Suddenly deep concern about steam tracking having been removed from the headset which has probably never once been suggested before this point.

sensors exposed on early models
https://twitter.com/z_zabaglione/status/915039144501420032

covered in later model but required manual thinning down/ adjustment to work

current has covered (presumed prethinned over sensors)

There is literally no reason to suggest they have gotten rid of one of the core technology features.

so like is this the new craic now. is this the new baseless panic for the next few weeks.

One of the issues with tracking was caused by covering the sensors, I’m not going to speculate that lighthouse support has been dropped. I’m also hoping that we won’t end up having something similar to the new Pimax 4K controllers  - YouTube

LG also used a flat shell for their functional prototype that “Tested” tried. See 1:07

Although their controllers had indents. So it could \just be a design choice.

O my … There is something very disturbing with this picture! My Pimax 8K is NOT on that shelve being assembled! That’s probably because I didn’t back KS… But it is still very disturbing! :innocent:

When is this available in Europe? :yum:

It depends on how the M1 testing goes. I’d guess it will be available retail around the end of the year.

Looking good. While I, too, am growing impatient, I’m looking forward to what the first tests will say. I hope there will not be to many problems slowing down the production.

I’m really looking forward to the product.

I’m not sure to whom you’re referring, I haven’t read any ‘deep concerns’ at all here, I think that’s in your mind. In fact, if you’re referring to me, I’ve already said that it’s more likely not an issue at all. Don’t freak out, just take a deep breathe, some of you are taking all this way too seriously. Nobody knows what’s going on, so no need to freak out at all. The testers will test M1 and if there’s an issue with tracking, there will be an M2. Simple as that.

The lens look nice
So they have assembled at least 3 headsets in the photo so looks like they will be testing and sending very soon with a bit of luck

I was referring to the physiognomy issue you brought up recently with regard to the people in those cities, not the controllers. They all looked pretty Caucasian in the videos.

As to having a secondary inside out tracking solution. This doesn’t negate the fact they have incorporated Valve tracking for v1 and v2 base stations as has been reported many times. That they aren’t sending V2 base stations (they are available until Oct) is not a surprise. If you want to assume something, assume the testers all have Vive and V1 base stations at their disposal and that if they didn’t selected anyone without them.
Again, I haven’t heard that they are no longer using Valve tracking so unless you have specific information, why make assumptions? Assuming negatives without facts serves no constructive purpose.

I guess I am still confused on where the timeline is… Does anyone know if test units have been sent/will be sent in the next day or so… or have we been told anywhere of a delay ? The pictures are pretty cool. I have never seen a hmd clean room before but I still dont know any more than I did last week… did I miss something ?

Can you show me some of the assumptions you’re talking about?

I really don’t know what you’re talking about. I only said that if you’re going to have people test headsets, it might be interesting to have also some caucasians test the headset, as Xunshu said up till now it have been mostly Asians testing it.

Unless they sent them all today they are behind in the stated timeline. Since they have been behind in all timelines this is not a surprise. Have to wait and see. They said they weren’t going to list the testers until they all had them so perhaps next weeks update will be more informative. As for a picture being worth a 1000 words - not so much.

Just seems like because they have no visible sensors and it has a 2nd tracking system which is part of it’s dual design by intent that you are making assumption they might, or could have or what? dropped the outside/in tracking? In the least it’s silly to worry about stuff not in evidence. Same with your recently revisited concern for whether Pimax has considered the differences Caucasian faces and fit. You seem to want to worry about stuff without any evidence that there is an issue, Sounds like you are making assumptions even if you just want to phrase it as worry. Why bother? Just wait for the actual facts. Nothing you can do at the point is going to change anything.
