HROUGH THE LENSES - PIMAX 5k+ vs HTC VIVE PRO vs ODYSSEY PlUS

Yup, if you play the game about visiting an oculist, 5K+ wins. In other cases - SDE of OP is more pleasant…

screenshots from 4K video:

Summary

Video through lens

Compare 5K + and VivePro
For some reason, the clarity seems to me sometimes more on the VivePro, and SDE is less noticeable on 5K + than VivePro in most situations.
But on the video VivePro has for some reason less noticeable SDE than 5K +, which is interesting.
I also noticed the 5K + verticals, which are sometimes noticeable.
The BigScreen 5K + has the best and clear fonts.

Yeah especially blurry on the 5k+, the great clarity doesn’t come out right also not the screendoor.

Had the opportunity to try an odyssey+ with my PC today.

No point watching a comparison video, you just dont get the same experience from the video.

Colors in odyssey+ is a reasonable notch above pimax. Colors are very lifelike and deep. (Pimax colors are not bad in saying that)

Black is the best I’ve seen, it’s way better than pimax.
One is black, one is grey, it’s that big of a difference.
SDE is unnoticeable.

What pimax has over the odyssey+ are a few things,

Stronger tracking performance

Quite a resolution clarity advantage over odyssey+, yes pimax is a fair bit sharper.

Using a virtual screen for surfing or work, where 5k+ could read text quite comfortably in comparison.

In a vibrant game, 5k+ would be my pick simply because of the superior resolution and fov.

In games with lots of dark scenes, I would say the odyssey would handily win over pimax. Pimax even with the extra clarity will still be troubled surrounded in a grey haze. Where odyssey+ would be a less distracting experience.

In games where there is a mix of vibrant and dark scenes, 5k+ will be my go to hmd, because the resolution clarity is noticeably better, if you been spoiled on a 5k+ for a while that is.

But say a spaceship game, I could see the odyssey+ towering over the pimax for its gorgeous blacks and vibrant colors.

One thing I noticed with pimax is that you perceive more depths, perhaps due to the extra resolution, I felt the environment is more 3d where in odyssey it felt abit flatter.

If pimax could come up with a hmd with oled screens and the clarity like the 5k+, I would no doubt reach for my wallet right now. Because that would be an amazing device to own.

Thanks go to davobkk for providing the odyssey+ for the comparison, he’s using my 5k+ for designing a strap to enhance the fitment for the pimaxs so let’s hope he comes up with a good design as fitments on pimaxs are so crucial to a good experience.

That last shot with the letters tells the story. Look at the bottom line of letters, they are blurry in both O+ and vive pro, but clear on pimax.

I think this is one of the best made comparison through the lens videos. I woulf love to see him do a 5k vs 8k vs be conparison.

@PimaxVR send this guy the other two . This would really help backers decide.

I disagree with these types of comparisons because the results shown are inherently flawed in that it’s not a controlled capture nor is information given!

  1. What is the SS (and pitool) settings for each headset? WMR at default 100% compared to Vive-Pro at default 100% are grossly different resolutions despite each headset having the same resolution

  2. What are the camera settings? Is the camera on “auto” so that it uses it’s light capturing algorithms to increase/decrease exposure via metering? This will make the black level and color intensity comparisons completely wrong.

  3. Color temperature? How do we know this is accurate in the slightest?

He might as well do an 80Hz to 90Hz comparison via youtube’s limited 60fps, as it’s just as valid.

I agree to compare we must now more about settings.

I personally prefer the picture from Vive pro, it crispier and better colurs.

It feels starnge that the resolution is not better on 5k+ , after all it has 55% more pixels than Vive pro.

strangest part in this video is assetto corsa. you can clearly see that something is wrong on the 5k+. I had a vive pro and I have a 5k+… no way is AC so unsharp with the right settings on the 5k+

some of the comparison shots don’t match up, especially the driving one. Plus i really don’t understand why he shows all three from a different angle when comparing side by side. The ones off centre will always look bad.

I think many of 5K+ pics are out of focus.
The only one mostly in focus is the Big Screen (small letters) one I think.

This is a great video to showcase the difference in colour/contrast and perhaps clarity between the three headsets. The camera focus appears off in some shots though so it’s not always an equal comparison.

The OLED panels used in the Vive Pro and O+ are certainly a tier above the Pimax LCD with regards to colours and contrast. The O+ looks the best as the Vive Pro appears to have a bit of god rays problem. The clarity is easily seen viewing the letters chart at the end where only the Pimax shows the bottom row clearly compared to the other HMDs.

Thanks for the video.

what annoys me the most about him (besides his facial overacting all the time): only complaints. he does not speak about the advantages of the pimax at all.

According to this video. The 5K+ has much lower brightness than the other 2, worse colours, not great blacks and severe performance issues. In some instances the Vive Pro looks sharper.

brightness is more than enough for me - well I always looked for a way to dim my vive (but not as much as nightmode does).

colors are good. not as strong as oled but oled does enhance colors too much imo. as a simracer I say my 5k+ produces the most lifelike colors of all headsets I have.

blacklevels are… well lcd‘ish, no way around that.

performance - we need a way to get rid of parallel projection (game/engine devs).

This is why I said the video does not reflect true experience on each hmd. For example the SDE on 5k+ is subtle. If o+ scores 100 the 5k+ is probably 85. Color differences is small with edge going to o+. Blacks is a no contest win for o+. Alot of this is being exaggerated if watching this video. Overall pimax is a better experience if realistic visual is what you prefer, o+ has a more artistic look, like a fine fantasy looking picture with a bit of blur where pimax is just in your face clear.

His facial expressions are off-putting to me as well. I don’t want to sound petty but they weird me out a bit. He makes high quality material as far as I have seen but from the beginning there was something about him that was annoying to watch.
