Neo, it was eminently clear that Pimax was not going to go for my initial exchangeable lens idea back with the M2 prototype. I spoke to Mathew.XU back when, and it seemed clear they were only going for a software based implemenation.
In truth, we scored a win!
we were lucky to get variable FOV in software for the performance gains.
New lenses would cost $50,000 in tooling for each, not to mention require testing. I do wish they would do lenses optimized for their different FOV options , but given that 8K-X is already $1300, whatever the cost of new lenses they could develop, it would transfer right to the consumer at which point it would be out of reach of most consumers.
Pimax as a company has also moved beyond the startup stage. They likely have parteners now with contracts and commitments will tie them down. (As has happened with the controllers.)
What I would recommend is that a brave and ambitious 8K-X owner should remove the optics, find out their properties, and then buy lower magnification lenses from a company like optolife (they are cheap) so that we have a proof of concept to show Pimax.
I doubt @SweViver will do this now, since he is an employee, not that it would be impossible for him to try. He is a bold one after all!
They are not going to retool for multiple new lenses, unless it could be decisively proven beforehand that the idea would improve the device in a big way, increasing its marketability to a larger base.
Unfortunately, industry doesn’t move because guys have awesome ideas. Just ask John Carmack about dealing with Samsung, and trying to convince them that his ideas are good.
