Well I posted this on the kiskstarter thread but that just full of random comments.
I think this idea is pretty essential for a Next-Gen VR system really, so creating a separate thread for it.
Let us know what you think, or any better ways to implement this, and hopefully Pimax will do it.
Seems OK, but the guy says the first chinese version isnt as good as the EU version.
Also will we have to purchase a separate powerbank to power the wireless system?
And towards the end of the video, if you need to change the powerbank, you have to restart SteamVR, which isnt good.
My suggestion for this would be to add a built-in capacitor which will allow you, say 5 to 10 seconds to remove one powerbank and attach a second. This would allow you to continue playing longer than 4 hours as stated in that video without having to restart your game.
Or you can have a button on the wireless module which if pressed will turn off the headset screens and speakers and all other non-essential features, and only keep the wireless signal running. This way you can put in a smaller capacitor, or give the player more time to swap the powerbank.
Edited the link to go straight to the part where the guy shows the removal and reinsertion of the battery.
Oh and another thing Pimax could do, seeing as this will be their own system, even if it is via a third party.
Why not add a couple of sensors on the powerbanks. Or something which the base stations can detect without draining the power from the powerbank.
This way instead of removing the headset and placing it back on, when you press the button to let the system know you are wanting to swap powerbanks, it will bring up the powerbanks in VR for you to grab and switch.
This is assuming you can do it without turning off the screen. If they cant add a big enough capacitor then removing the headset whilst you do it will have to be the way.
Though it is a simple action and if you place your second powerbank somewhere where you can easily pick it up without removing the headset then you can switch them pretty quickly.
Someone replied saying why not add 2 powerbanks by default with a switch to select which bank to use.
I guess it would work, but it also means carrying around a second powerbank on your belt.
Powerbanks are small, but can be a little heavy, and I think having 2 of them hanging off your belt would be distracting especially when you do quick movements.
You will get that with just the one, but the second powerbank will increase the effect
Hi
I just installed the TP-Cast @ my Vive. It would be great if Pimax creates a solution which makes it easy to change between wired- and wireless mode. For example if playing racesimulators (or any seated experiences) it would be good to be able to just use the cable.
On the vive i have to remove the top panel on the hmd to change cables. An easyer, faster solution on Pimax would be great.
Looking forward to the 8k. Good luck an keep up the good work.
Hello Bennus
For example, I would like a plug-in possibility on the TPCast module (at the back of the head) to plug in the cable. If pluged, that could be a pass throug. If nothing is pluged => wireless. This would mean i have to plug 3 plugs only, also if the battery is low or if I play for long time in a racingseat. Less brain-heating from transmitters xD, less battery degradation for “unneccessary” use. Ofcourse if someone preferes to switch the battery and play wireless all time no problem, i just think if the design could be right, right from the start, this could be a useful option. No must use.
My experience on using the Vive is, that in 80% of the time I am seated (race- and flightsims). The cable would just stay in the headset then. I would only change it to wireless (just unplug 3 plugs) when I play games with movement in the room.
Greetings
Additionally to (or instead of) a capacitor there could be a connector that enables the use of two or more batteries in parallel. Plug in new battery, remove old one, and you’re good.
It could be used for hot swapping batteries, or to extend play time at the cost of higher battery weight.
Ideally the connector would be simple to use without taking off the headset.
