Suggestion: "Helmet FOV"

Would it be possible to have a “Helmet FOV” option for pitool?

If we could reduce vertical FOV, similar to small, normal, large like now but cut the view from top and bottom.

I think this would work really well in racing sims. This would give more head room for graphics and FOV would be more realistic.

Great idea. As a simracer I like it as realistic as possible.

I will not like to have my vertical FOV limited

There talking about limit case useage option.

Technically yes thats possible. The Pimax devs would need to add a black “mask” to mask out a bit of the image. Im not sure if they will bother though. Feels a bit weird to decrease the vertical FOV, when its so great

Agreed! Pimax has bigger fish to fry like making knuckles work, motion compensation work, and low gpu usage on the software side of their house which are more a priority as they are things actually broken. Fixing the gpu usage issue will give the original poster the extra performance he is looking for anyway!

In racing helmet the vertical FOV is very limited. If we would have this option it would reduce the CPU and GPU load quite a lot.

In racing sims it would be more beneficial to have large horizontal FOV and small vertical FOV.

Sweviver, to be clear, I meant that there would be option for vertical FOV:

Small, Normal, Large like we have now but in vertical direction.
Not just black mask, that would block FOV but not reduce HW requirements.

With that extra power we could run more SS, higher in game settings, etc.

Of course this option use is almost limited to racing sims, but 5k/8k is working so well in racing sims and this would imo make it even better :grinning:

I think this might bring more customers from sim racing community, because HW requirements would be lower and view more realistic.

But in the real world you see the helmet in your vertical fov. So it should render the helmet up there to be more immersive. Project cars and other racing games have a view that puts you in a helmet to make it more realistic already. Why not boost performance via fixing the gpu usage as Sweviver has discovered? It was found to be quite substantial.

Keep in mind Japo once Opensourcing is in place a variety of per use features are likely to come. :beers::sunglasses::+1::sparkles:

Michael, true that you see your helmet in your view if look at it. But if you look ahead it just blocs your vertical FOV. I just tested this with my motorcycle helmet. With helmet on you cant see your legs and only about half your steering wheel.

This is from iRacing forum:

Racing helmets are 25deg vertical and 180-210 horizontal depending which standard is being quoted.
Snell (not one permitted in ANZ) is 180deg
ECE (one of the two standards permitted in ANZ) is 210deg.

Heliosurge, yes I really hope so :grinning: Pitool The Racing Edition :+1:

Indeed a benefit of Opensourcing. Alternatively Iracing/Sim Devs could also add an option to mask the unneeded height as well.

Something to ask the Iracing Devs to consider in game options. :beers::sunglasses::+1::sparkles:

Yes, I have been road racing and autocrossing for years, you know you are in the helmet, it’s not just black bars in your vision.
