SteamVR crashes on start after changing refresh rate, very strange work around

So when I change the refresh rate (usually 90hz for adventure/action games or 144hz for fitness games) first I close steamvr, change the setting, let the hmd reboot, then try to start steamvr again. this worked fine until about 3 weeks ago. now steamvr will show briefly in the task bar before crashing without a message, process just stops and task bar tab disappears. I’ve been rebooting my PC between these changes and after that steamvr launches fine and it’s super annoying… BUT

a few days ago I noticed that if I launch BEAT SABER from within pitool, steamvr auto-launches successfully after a refresh rate change! but not from any other game. so now when i change refresh rates I have to run beat saber and close it to get on to the app i really want to run.

it’s better than rebooting, but man what a weird problem and solution!
