StarVR One vs. Pimax 8K-X vs. Others

Does it really matter, after all? :slightly_smiling_face:

If resolution was the only metric, then you’d be right. Unfortunately the 8k-X has it’s own set of disadvantages, like distortion, smaller FoV, and bleak colors. That’s why I bought the StarVR. I preordered a 8k-X too and I’ll keep that order in, but I’m not so sure which headset I’ll like better, that’s yet to be determined. Surely VR is much more than just resolution.

What? Not to my eyes!

It has the same panel as the 8k+ and many said the colors were barely any better than the 5k+

Resolution is a prerequisite. Even for roomscale stuff, for which it is arguably not as crucial, it is still sweet not to have a world of fog, contrast reduced by smeared across multiple pixels, or vegetation that looks like like sprites.

Ah. Depends on the 5k+. Mine was awful in terms of color quality compared to the 8k+ or 8kX, but I was still ok with it.

You present personal opinion as a fact. For me distortionless image is the basic prerequisite for good VR.

I can look past that. I can’t look past what I can’t see at all.

If all you want is lack of distortion, I can make a fanstastic VR headset with two LEDs.

And now you’re just trolling.

I never said resolution is everything. FOV is super important, especially for me. Maybe more than resolution and SDE after all. Im sure StarVR has wider FOV than 8KX, no doubt. But the problem is, once you go back 2 VR generations resolution-wise, the wider FOV might not weight it up anymore.

If Pimax 5K+ was the only comparison, I would agree with you. But today, after using both 8KX, 8K+ and Reverb, even the Valve Index looks low res to me…

I simply don’t agree with that.

This section of video shows the color contrast differences on the panels: (8k, 5k+ and 8k+)

The latest panels are also capable of a lot better blacks (but not OLED level). You get a good idea of the improvement here: THROUGH THE LENSES - PIMAX 8K+ vs Pimax 8K vs Pimax 5K+ Comparison - YouTube

That’s why I’m keeping my 8k-X order in. In the end it’s a total package of all different metrics that determine the experience. But only 1 metric being better doesn’t guarantee a better experience. And in the end it also comes down to personal preferences.

Well maybe you don’t agree but I’ve seen several 8k+ reviews that said that the colors were pretty dull. I only have an 5k+ and had the Artisan, both were about equally dull and quite a big step down from the Index (which in itself already is quite a step down from OLED)

All of the 8k+ and 8kX units I have seen are far superior to my 5k+ in color quality. The video footage doesn’'t do justice to just how much of a difference the human eye can see here.

i had the pimax 8kplus,but the valve index has better colors and clarity

They typically aren’t doing head to heads like Tyriel Wood did. They are going from “memory”. It’s also about what the panel is capable of rather than how it looks on default settings.

The fact is the 8K+ and X are capable of a greater range of colors and darker blacks. It of course doesn’t approach OLED but what it DOES do it allow a wider ability to adjust it. It is very noticeable even at default settings and great when you tweak it.

Then where are all the bad reviews about 8k+ colors coming from?

Same. My samples shine especially when you adjust them as the possible color contrast range is higher.

Older panels maybe? @PimaxUSA

Well fact is that most reviews of the 8k+ have been pretty mediocre at best, even on this forum. And a lot seem to complain about the colors not being very good.
