Don’t break it man^^
So, I hope you are doing some step by step photos “ifixit”-style just for the case we need to open our HMDs sommetime later
Thx man! I / We appreciate your brave contribution. But really, don’t take the risk breaking it.
Someone posted in this thread:

an interesting view in “near infrared” light, which seems to make the body of Pimax translucent, so maybe you could use it for hints on internal structure before going all-in with your screwdriver and/or dremel .

How hard would it be to upgrade your own screens if they are the same dimensions and use MIPI connectors?
Well that is scary. Good luck
@Sjef you’re a warrior
Ok now it’s getting a bit difficult:
All those flat ribbon cables are VERY easy to damage and there are a lot of them. Too bad that I just can’t make out, what seems to be, the panel model number:
Behind the aluminium, on the panel back side It says “SX1 … 076B”
On the pimax 4k this number is printed on that location too and there it indeed was the panel model
The real question of interest is the jdi panel is 3.42"?
If this panel is used in the 5k\8k shell it brings the panel utilization in question.
The 5k be using 5.7" panel no wonder it looks bad being larger than the 8k 5.5".
I’m not even sure you could swap 5k+ screens with 8k, I don’t think the headset is detecting the screen type, it’s probably set somewhere in an EEPROM. Switching to different screens would be very hard, you’d need to change the firmware which is very difficult with the sources.
If you haven’t checkout the thermal/infrared vids might be an idea. Tge fellow whom made them might be able to take pics to determine panel sizing. By signatures.
It says SX17…8076B I think … Anybody knows how to google for that with wild cards?
Anyway I guess I’m going to stop here, it’s really difficult to open up the panel case, since you’ll need to disconnect all of those flat ribbon cables and they’re extremely easy to damage. Don’t want to break my pimax 5k+ within 24 hours LOL.
Anyway, to open up the HMD case itself you need to unscrew some screws, I’ll upload a small tutorial later today. Maybe someone braver than me feels like disconnecting the flat ribbon cables LOL
Indeed you’ve gone far enough. If you look at the first post the firmware poke might give enough possible panel info to determine rest of the numbers missing.
The numbers you have though suggests the panel model number isn’t in tge firmware poke conducted by @fennec.
Yeah not sure what to think about that. I remember that the Pimax 4k model string also didn’t appear in the FW, while the 4k BE model number did appear in the FW.
Anyway as you can see I think the whole part below the iron is panel. So it’s actually quite big, certainly not that 3.4" panel, more like a 5.x inch panel
I don’t think any search engine still supports wildcards
