Any special format needed/ requested for this “galaxy” environment replacement?
So that’s why I never noticed it… One of the first things I did was tweak the looks (font size, background, environment) and I settled on a background with no environment…
I can confirm that the Galaxy Enviorment was the root cause of the memory issue.
With the “None” option active the memory consumption is only about 315 MB.
New version Beta v0.22 is up! Please update to this version and let me know how it goes (also including some other fixes and minor features)

Hmm any cool environment should do it
Ive been looking at different forest/low poly environments and tested a few, but all of them are so huge in size and eats a lot of memory
Something bright would be nice also! Im considering to add a bright UI theme soon (but yeah there are more important things right now…)
With environment you mean a Unity scene?
Yeah, anything more in 3D than just a Skybox background
Hi Marcin! could you maybe tell me how big (MB) the current environment is, and also find out how many polygons it has? How big should it be maximal not to stress the memory to much? Any other special things to be taken care about when setting up such an environment (other than being completely free).
So i’ve just had a few PE sessions, and here’s my findings around MEM usage +
Avarage MEM usage 130MB for the Unity session. NICE !
Avarage GPU usage 12~14% Very NICE !
Avarage GPU frequency is at Nvidia Perf Level P0 when in PE, Very NICE !! as this does not heat up the GPU excessively.
Likeing the progress! keep up the good work.
Allthough I feel like replacing the standard Pimax background on the HMD to an all black, it’s a tad bit annoying when exiting SteamVR and waiting to enter PE.
It goes from SteamVR to blank, then the Pimax backdrop, then blank and then PE.
Sorry I missed your comment…
The project size of the old Pimax Galaxy Environment was larger than 1 Gb, but when built into runtime. it wasnt actually large, around 100Mb. I never really measured the RAM usage of the galaxy, but I noticed the application is using almost 100Mb less now when the environment is gone.
No idea about polygon size, but it was quite a complex terrain.
No special requirements, apart from it should look “welcoming” and not scary I guess haha Also, dont use forward rendering. The PE project uses Deferred rendering.
I would say anything between 100-200 in size when build should be fine.
Thanks ,great to hear Im not done improving this, but indeed performance shouldnt be a problem anymore, at least for now…
Regarding the background, you can change it yourself by replacing the image:
C:\Program Files\Pimax\Runtime\resource\pimax_default.jpg
I could ask the Pitool enginners to maybe replace it on default, but I think they said they wanted that logo to easily see if HMD is tracking or not (image is not seen when tracking is lost). Making it completely black will make it difficult to detect if headset actually is tracking or not.
You could use a flashing LED to indicate that the HMD is not tracking.
This would make it possible to display a black image and would also be good for problem analysis.
And a black image would not make people sick.
Not a bad idea. I will forward this to the engineers.
Maybe we can use the flashing chevron LED for THIS purpose, instead of Parallel Projection, which boggles me why it was even added
I was more thinking of the power LED but this is also an option.
YES YES YES ! Sorry for the outburst but that would be a proper use for the Chevron LED’s
and I know how to replace the image thanks for the guide though, someone here might not know how
Parallel projection mode is allready shown by the Power LED by turning it Purple.
Also an option to turn the chevron led off if desired
Promised a long time ago. Also to be able to change the LEDs to any color.
like me good to know where to find it and not to have to search. Even this is one of more obvious.
no problem with that it’s been busy here and I am very glad seing it, all this community members willing to take their time improving and helping out and giving so many feedbacks.
I do have some 3D experiences (modelling as hobby) but nothing related to Unity so far. But installed it now and will try to dig into it and maybe come with something useful. But we might have other 3D geeks here willing to collaborate on a new environement?
But thx for all the related informations, very helpful!
Remember to restart piservice and hmd after replacing the file, the it will be uploaded to the hmd
