So my 8k unit arrived today. I have managed to install pitools and steamvr and can get the ‘waiting rooms’ working (moon of a gas giant for pimax, conservatory with companion cube for steam vr), and also played war robots vr (as this is my 'first vr headset’™ I’m limited to seated/controller type games).
From what I can see, it works great on my setup for war robots vr and the ‘waiting rooms’, however when I try to load elite dangerous I just get the back lights. I can see what I’m supposed to see in the left monitor due to the mirroring on my desktop monitor, but I can’t see anything but grey through the headset.
I can only advise based on my Pimax 4k… as i dont have a 5k or 8k. and i suspect that you need parallel reprojection enabled for this title on your headset to start with.
For me, I launch Steam and then open SteamVR. (then wait for the steamvr to open and recognise the HMD)
then at the bottom of steam library there is a section called VR GAMES, in there is Elite Dangerous, if you click on it once the PLAY icon will change to PLAY IN VR. click that and it should load in VR.
you can also launch ED by right clicking ELite in your library and choosing LAUNCH ELITE DANGEROUS IN VR
So more testing with so far no success, but it turns out what I thought was the mirroring was actually steam loading ED VR onto my monitor rather than to my headset, and bringing up the VR mirror generates a grey bar (and so mirrors what I was seeing - go figure).
Which is truly bizarre because the war robots vr demo loads fine onto the pimax.
I hadn’t done room setup, as I thought that would require lighthouses… thank you for the suggestion it now appears to have fixed the issue. Surprised that the other game worked, but I can get to and at least see the menu screen in VR.
And for those without lighthouses - F12 is the magic button to recenter your view in Elite Dangerous.
Every time I start the game up I’m pointing in a slightly different direction as forward. F12 resets the view correctly. I did, however, need to unmap F12 from taking screenshots in Steam…
