The new Vive Pro complete package, which will include base stations and motion controllers compatible with Valve tracking 2.0, could have a price close to € 1,600 ($ 1,500 in the United States) and be available on Thursday, April 19.
What?! They are smoking rocks. As soon as this is out Vive Pro will be obsolete and overpriced. lol
That’s awesome! Definitely in competition with the rich. Lol
Please, someone tell me what they smoke. I want dat stuff aswell. They are complety the fuck out of their stupid minds.
They could have saved a ton of backlash if they wouldn’t have marketed it as a product for consumers and had made it clear that it was intended for companies.
Keep in mind it is cheaper than HeroVR lol
IF Pimax fails to deliver then they can charge whatever they want. But if Pimax 8k is going to be any good, I wonder why anyone would want to buy the Vive Pro.
If Pimax succeed, HTC will have to lower their prices a lot.
Well, focussing on the high-end market with unspectacular products at a spectacular price point has worked so well for HTC in the mobile phone market.
…
actually holding it together…
I do buy the “Pro” thing though. I’m looking at the defining feature of the device as being just one single thing: The quick fit and release procedure afforded between the 90 degree hinges, the ratchetting mechanism, and the headphones which seem to have the sense to actually stay folded out, when put in that position (EDIT: …and the padding, and all that). Only that: A procedure that makes passing the device expediently between a succession of users easy; Much like the design of saftey bars in a rollercoaster, or that huge lever at the back of the old Virtuality Visette. :7
This is what makes the device targetted to the commercial Vive customer base that HTC has fostered, and not so much home users, although they’ll certainly not turn down anyone’s money.
There is apparently currently no enterprise plan available for the Pro, but it’s probably just a matter of time until that not only comes, but existing contracts can be upgraded with new “pro” units.
I’d go so far as to say that, with the above, I’m pretty convinced HTC would absolutely have tried to get away without updated screens if they could. As it is, they did at least have enough awareness to realise they and their product designation would have been properly laughed at, so they had to increase the resolution, and not just to 1440p which would have brough PPD parity with the Rift, but surpassing it.
Lol $1,500? those $800 for the headset alone was in fact $1100 in Sweden, so I guess it will be around $2000 for the whole bundle here in the north Funny you get almost 3 sets of Pimax 8K full set for that amount…
HTC have lost their marbles!! That price is just crazy! And thought my vive was pricey back when i pre ordered it… jeez…
Guys relax … it’s called a rumour for a reason… it would be pretty stupid from HTC to do this. I’m expecting a max.1100$ price point.
Indeed considering both the tracking sensors & lighthouse v2.0 are supposed yo be cheaper to make. But then again HTC should have released b4 the Odyssy to have had better reception of their high price point.
Realisticly the full package should only be $300-$400 more max. So as you said $1100 to $1200. Which is still pretty steap. Now if they throw in a vive puck v2.0 for that range folks would likely be somewhat okay with it.
Vive just using hype balloon at the beginning of the launching new product. Price will start dropping soon at some reasonable price after the sale starts dropping… If you are not buying it that will be sooner.
This is probably a smarter business decision than it initially looks.
If you can’t sell in previous volumes due to competition appearing that previously wasn’t around for the MK1 variant, simply make your product appear more niche by pricing it out of the reach of most people.
Consequently, now only the wealthy (with a higher disposable income) or those who want to be seen as wealthy buy into your product, even though it’s no longer ‘the best’ or is about to be usurped by Pimax 8K…
Over pricing adequate or outdated technology is what Apple did and do with their iPhone. Remember that people on low incomes are so keen on being seen as having money (by buying an iPhone and showing off the brand - ownership via status) they queue up overnight and camp outside a store, despite what they crave being obsolete within a year also being only equal or inferior to their competitor -Samsung.
If you know you can sell an OK product for an extortionate price, then why not go for it? It looks to me that HTC are following this idea with the Vive Pro model if rumours are to be proven correct that is…
My thought is that HTC can’t get a large allocation of the higher-res display. If they can’t produce the Vive Pro in large numbers, it makes sense to “charge what the market will bear”.
Yep just like memory supply & in this case projected demand. & obviously Samsung is going to supply themselves first for the Odyssy; especially at the Odyssy’s price point.
A reddit Pro guy just told me: It got better comfort than the oddissey and is higher quality as well.
It totally makes sense to ask 1200$ more than for a oddissey then obviously!
Pimax really needs to pull this off. The two big ones are out of the game for me by now. Oculus with focussing on a crappy mobile HMD and HTC by being stupid fools thinking they can save the sinking ship with an outrageous price.
If the package contains the steam knuckels, the price is quite high but acceptable.
But I don´t think so.
Some month ago you can read about the low production costs of the lighthouse 2 systems.
It is really necessary that Pimax launch a really good und fair priced vr, because HTC seems to lost their price feeling
Apple under Jobs (and still coasting on this) was always a cross between a cult and a fashion house. They, like other luxury/lifestyle brands, have the cachet to exploit the vanity/herd mentality of people, in such a manner. HTC have never managed to get themselves into such a position – they were on their way there, in their early days - then competition exploded. :7
