Reviewers, what is your thoughts on the leap motion module?

I haven’t heard much about the leap motion module. I have the original leap motion(at $35, who could resist?) before vr and while it was cool, there wasn’t much that they did for it. I wanted to see what reviewers thoughts on this were since those who are dropping from the 8k to the 5k have this as a upgrade(downgrade?lol) choice. Was it useful? Do you see it being used in games later since this time it is an actual add on not something ghetto rigged on the headset, like for the vive? Any additional information like how much of your field of view it captures would be helpful as well. Thanks! @VoodooDE @SweViver @mixedrealityTV Do we only have three reviewers, BTW?

On the VR https://discordapp.com/invite/virtualreality (Join us for a Pimax chat! ;)) a tester there has tried the leap v2 which is on the pimax and says that it’s an amazing experience.

Once more users have it, hopefully more devs provided experiences that draw people in. It’s biggest issue is lack of dev support I think.

Does Leap Motion support a “virtual gamepad” mode? I’m not calling for holding a non-existent gamepad, but maybe something like mapping my left fingers to WASD, right to fingers to other keys. Or maybe even simulating a throttle by how much a finger is curved. Maybe that’d make it easier to use in more games?

I have the first Leap Motion and I have tried it with my Vive several times. The first impression is nice but there’s lack of any actual software to use it for. There are a few demos but that’s it.
The lack of haptic feedback is the biggest problem for most users. When you hold an object you are holding air and I must say that for me any type of controller is better experience than having nothing in your palms.

It would be so cool to just have the arms and fingers correctly animated in seating sims.
Sim gamers spend thousands of hours in their rigs with expensive hotas and steering wheels. It would be cool to custom a given VR cockpit to match the layout the real world has, a virtual button could be placed on the arm wrest or desk. It would easily be extendable, for sim cockpits there is no need to grab thin air we are surrounded by surfaces we could put virtual buttons on.
For ED the galaxy map could work with air waiving gestures i’m sure.

It’s just that game devs don’t care at all. I dunno why, the demos of LM are cool. Chicken and egg problem might only be solvable when gamers insist on support. But as long as LM doesn’t push at least for a single AAA title supporting it I can’t see how they ever wanna get into the market for real…

I have the first one with my Rift. Its kind of OK for flipping switches in P3D but not great and slower than just using the mouse.

It does have a virtual yoke and throttle in that but way to glitchy to actually fly with more than, “yeah that would be cool” for a minute.

I wonder if there’s a good use for it in porn?

There is no haptical feedback. Developers should implement use cases where no feedback is expected either because panels to push are projected or feedback is provided via various input devices not tied to hands.

Both is part of ED played with HOTAs, unfortunately no support today in any use case…

It all depends on Devs and the user base having these sensors is a very small group. Leap Motion company has to make a huge effort to support developers like Oculus program in order to get these experiences. I don’t think that a few thousand users having these sensors with a completely new HMD would be the target group of devs. Other than that the technology is great!

Chicken or Egg, which one was first? Without investment it won’t take off.

Leap Motion released some information on the use of the Leap Motion module in conjunction with the wireless modules of the Vive & Vive Pro: on the Vive it appears to work if you follow their instructions, however on the Vive Pro it is said to not perform properly likely due to bandwidth issues.

Applying this information to the Pimaxes it would mean it is likely that the Pimax hand tracking module, which is a Leap Motion module, will in all likelihood only work with the tethered 8K & 5K+ but not with the wireless module Pimax eventually may release.

The only time i tried it was at the VOID in london. It was very cool and very glitchy, but then again the tracking as a whole was really poor but it didn’t ruin the enjoyment. was really cool to see your hands though
