[Replied]#1071 US 5K+ Smudge within/on right lens and debris within/on both lenses

SUPEN-1270 @anon84525399

Received the 5K+ last evening and set it up today. There is debris within or on the front surfaces of both lenses as well as a rounded smudge within or on the front surface of the right lens. I promise that none of the debris or the smudge in the photographs are on the “eye/user/back” surfaces of the lenses and cannot be wiped off with a microfiber cloth. While using the HMD the rounded smudge is clearly visible near the 4 o’clock position of the right lens. In all honesty I cannot perceive the other debris while in VR, but I’m certain it shouldn’t be there.

So that’s the bad news but there’s plenty of good news. My experience - DK2, Gear Explorer Edition, Launch Rift, Launch Vive.

Everything else about the 5K+ meets or exceeds my expectations. The packaging is minimalist and quite cool, protecting the headset well. The fit and finish of the device are perfectly fine. The seams of the plastic housing look uniform and are well aligned. No cracks (so far), creaking or loose parts. Software setup and device/controller detection/pairing were problem free and everything worked as expected (I was so excited that I forgot to reboot Win 10 and everything still worked). Resolution and FOV are fantastic (bye-bye Gen 1 devices). No dead pixels as far as i can tell with a few hours of use. To my surprise, I perceived only minimal outer edge distortion with large fov, only when specifically looking for it and immediately forgotten. The Rift and Vive have MUCH worse peripheral distortion. I had no difficulty with finding an optimal IPD adjustment which is around 7, and there’s a large sweet spot. Black levels look perfectly fine (big Elite and DCS fan here). Performance is better than expected even with large fov (i8700K @ 5 GHz, Titan X Pascal). Even the cheapo head strap is fine when properly adjusted, and I would advise KS backers to consider waiting for the deluxe Pimax strap rather than investing if the Vive offering. (I actually own the DAS but haven’t printed out the conversion kit yet.)

So well done Pimax, except that that clean room may not have been so clean…

my first 5K+ had dome dust specks too under the lenses.

you could try to remove the lenses with a suction cup and clean the inside - the displays are protected by another layer of “glas” so you don’t have to worry about dust getting to the displays. but ask pimax first if you are allowed to do so.

Sorry to hear of the headset issues. Have added dallas to your post. Congrats on reveiving & otherwise a nice review. Just please be paitent & I’m positive they will resolved this. :beers::sunglasses::+1::sparkles:

It is easy enough to remove the lens and clean the surfaces. If you got away with no dead pixels I would say clean it yourself rather than risk the RNG on getting one back with dead pixels from the RMA.

in the UK if you buy a spot light bulb, the ones that go up in the ceiling some of them come with a suction cup to get them in and out of the fitting, if you can find one of these use it to get the lens out.

Thank you for the replies. I am absolutely willing to remove the lens for cleaning if support provides a Pimax-approved procedure which doesn’t void any warranty. This is a very simple QA fix for them. I am very curious to see if similar reports crop up here as more units get delivered. Otherwise I remain blown away by this device.

SweViver already showed how to do it in one of his videos

I’d send that right back!

I’ll watch this but I would definitely need instructions from Pimax support to proceed. Its conceivable that they will want the unit back for their own QA assessment.

I think pimax should use 2 persons to check the 1 headset in quality control process. This issue is easily to see, not sure how quality control department can pass it except they don’t check it.

Hello VR-Enthusiasts,
I received my Pimax 8k last Monday and set it up yesterday. My Pimax has the same issue. There is something like a dust or like a small steel wool wire between the left lense and the screen. It’s visible on brigth scenes.
Did you guys already receive a solution from the pimax support?
Attached are some pics. But as you all know, it’s kind a difficult to take a pic through the IMG_20190117_211816|375x500

Sorry, I didn’t know, that I am just allowed to upload one pic.

Support has acknowledged my ticket. I can live with the debris issue as it is not visible while in VR, but that rounded smudge results in a blurry spot in VR which is immediately apparent and distracting.

Thanks for your advice. I already contacted Mr. Hao.

I went for the Pimax 8k and the FOV is really awesome.
