Possible direct comparison of blue case vs black case Artisan FOV!

Sorry I’ve been very busy lately, moved again …and not yet internet connection .
I will try it asap anyway even if it might be late now.
But as soon as the Artisan is available again I plan to order one, so I should get a blue one and compare them .
Cheers

I never seen a photo of blue artisan

Here you can see one, it’s the Artisan I received a few weeks ago and sold to him: https://community.openmr.ai/t/danger-avg-guy-video-review-incoming/28314

I bought an Artisan from a seller on eBay. Black case, with comfort kit, elastic strap. Starting with PiTool 254a, I’m getting 129.55 horizontal via hdmdq. I’m using 254a on the advice of one of the Pimax experts on the IL2 forum (I basically just want it for flight sims).

This is my first Pimax so I’m learning how to do all the setup, etc, but I figured I would post here with this result.

Thanks Alonzo, that’s interesting. I haven’t tried 254a but might give it a go.

Did you ever track down (ha!) the tracking problem? I seem to have exactly the same issue – sometimes tracking is acquired immediately, sometimes the headset just sits there. I’ve moved all the reflective surfaces in my room to ensure it’s not caused by that. I’ve tried restarting everything, full reboots, HMD reboots, power cycling stuff. Nothing seems to encourage it to pick up the tracking.

No, I sent the headset back to the company I bought it from on Aliexpress. It’s interesting that you are having that problem with a black case version. I thought it was just the new blue case models that had it as the only two people before yourself that seemed to report the problem were using blue case versions - and my black case version seems to be fine. I’m now surprised that others haven’t reported it on other headsets.

Yeah had that too with the blue case version. What worked for me best was to just restart the service each time that it happened

I have it too with my 5k+. Where all my other headsets connect each time flawlessly, my pimax headsets are hit/miss. You just have to do that whole dance of moving the headset around, restarting service and it will always work in the end. But it’s a bit frustrating. Not sure why this happens, I think it’s a software problem though.

Do you have one or two base stations? I have just one. Gave up tonight, I either need another base station or a firmware/software update to fix this.

Am feeling pretty disillusioned with the Artisan. The field of view is great compared to my Rift S, but the fact that basic things like tracking don’t work is really frustrating.

Edit: Aha. Seems like with just one base-station, I need it on channel A, not b (the default). Channel A is used for single base-station mode and sweeps at 60hz, whereas channel b is intended for use in 2-basestation setups and it sweeps at 30hz (with the other base station sweeping also at 30, giving combined 60hz).

I switched it to Channel A and the thing connected immediately.

Edit: Nope! Still refusing to connect. I thought this had fixed it, because it reconnected several times to tracking, no problem. But now it’s stopped tracking again. Nothing physical has changed. I definitely think there’s some kind of software/firmware issue.

I’m using 2 base stations. I’m sure it’s a problem with the headset (maybe firmware) because I tested the blue and black ones I had side by side and the black one worked and and the blue one didn’t (I’m not saying now though that it’s to do with what colour version it is).

Are there difference between black version and blue One about the FoV?

I tried to explain my findings a few posts up on that - it’s not a straight yes or now I’m afraid.

So far, here’s what I’ve figured out. I have a black-case Artisan, it came with comfort kit and silicone protection cover.

  • The PiTool software can get the headset stuck on a particular FOV. I switched mine to ‘small’ to see the difference, and then even when I set it back to ‘normal’ hmdq was still telling me 111 degrees hFOV. I had to edit the PiTool JSON settings file to get it back to ‘normal’ 131 degrees hFOV.
  • I’m using a single HTC Vive 1.0 base station. For best tracking this must be on channel A, not the default, ‘b’. (If you have two base stations you want b + c).
  • The Artisan, like a lot of other Pimax headsets, greatly prefers USB 2.0 to USB 3.0 ports on your PC. Tracking is almost instant now I’ve switched to a USB 2.0 port. usbtreeview tells me it’s all connected to the same USB controller chip, but it made a difference.
  • I get headphone audio crackle on either USB 2.0 or 3.0. I did manage to fix the crackle by using a powered USB 2.0 hub, but then I started frequently losing tracking. I’m not knocking the Artisan (too much) that it’s finnicky about USB, god knows my Rift S needed fiddling with. I was surprised that a known-good USB 3.0 port (the VirtuaLink on my 2080) caused audio crackle with the Artisan, but c’est la vie.
  • I’ve decided to ignore the audio problem and just use wireless headphones. I’m finding the cloth strap + comfort kit reasonably okay. I guess at some point when DMAS is generally available I’ll think about switching (but to do so, I’d have to fix the audio crackle).

Very interesting, thanks.

Not very related but did you order you silicone protection cover specifically. The reason I’m asking is I ordered mine separately but about 2 weeks after I ordered the Artisan and had separate tracking numbers for each. When the Artisan was finally being delivered (two months after ordering) the lady from the company on Aliexpress that I bought both of them from mentioned that the Silicone cover would also be in the box - which I thought was very strange seeing how I received the tracking number for the headset 2 weeks before ordering the cover. So either I’ve got another cover still on it’s way or something else strange happened with the postage!!

I bought my Artisan open box from another Canadian, I’m not sure where they got it. I expect it was from an Aliexpress seller but I’m not sure. I figured the thing was at least in the country and I’d get it quicker than ordering through other means and not have to gamble on customs duties (and I got a great deal with a single “last 15 minutes” eBay bid).

Ah, thanks.

I just tested my black case Artisan with 254a Pitool and got 124 degrees FOV but I think my firmware wasn’t right as I also couldn’t get more than about 12 FPS! (My firmware on the headset is 255 something.) Overall, I’m liking my Artisan more and more in terms of the overall picture quality and FOV - but the wire changes the complete feel (even for my seated position where I’m used to turning in my swivel chair). I’m glad I didn’t go for the X at the moment as I will wait to see what happens with the wireless tech over the next year (hopefully someone will bring something out!)

Coincidently, this morning after writing my post last night about realising I might have another silicone cover on it’s way to me (see 3 posts up) another one arrived in the post this morning (black). If anyone based in UK want’s it for face value (without posting costs) send me a personal email.
